Final Fantasy XV Gamescom Active Time Report - CNN reporting live from disaster scene

That's true. It does invoke that imagery, but it just felt like a lot of it was due to Nomura's themes of making Lucis all black to go against Niflheim's white attire.

Not that it makes any difference, though.

I'd say it's quite intentional. Lucis is basically modern day Japan, to a degree that no other kingdom has ever been in an FF game.

I think they were quite conscious in making the royal family look like a powerful modern business family which... in Japan's case, would be yakuza.

Does the idea of "fantasy based on reality" explain why all the natural environments we've seen so far have been so mundane? Every biome looks like it's just the usual thing I'd see on a trip across America.

I want my crystalline caves and shit.

I think they just haven't really shown much of the world. This area looks a bit more interesting and even then I think it's actually still a part of Duscae; I can't recall any other natural areas they've shown besides this, Duscae demo region, and the limited view of the Malboro area.

Nomura's only design job well done IMO is the original FFVII, Dissidia, original Aya Brea (Parasite Eve), Aqua and Keyblade armor.

Keyblade armor is still quite overdesigned, but alright. Everything else ranges from mediocre to trash.
Yeah those were great.

I also really dislike Nomura's Advent Children redesigns of the FF7 cast, and how those will likely be what is used in the Remake.

Cloud looks so freaking pencil-thin now, so does Tifa. I guess that's the Japanese standard of beauty to be as thin as a skeleton. More awkward then ever now when wielding that huge sword with his wiry frame.

I really think they need to start showing more variety in areas. That was one of the things I was hoping to see at gamescom trailer...

Let them explore their styles, and let them be Japanese. It's a Japanese company.

Telling them not "be so Japanese" is like going to a Japanese restaurant and asking for a burger and fries. Even if they do cater to your wish, it'll never be great because that's not the kind of stuff they specialize in. If you're going to play a Japanese game, expect it to be Japanese.

Eh?

I've never seen Japanese design to be intrinsic with tacky excess and glamour.

But there is a unique elegance there for sure.

Yes... that's my hope too. But it's been a decade of concepts (whether in the game now or not, who can tell at this point?) and we've yet to see many truly "fantasy" environments.

I'm sure they will have fantasy settings tucked away in there, but at this point I do have to ask if they are going for subdued reality for the main of the world.

A) Welcome to FF. B) Welcome to JRPG's. We dont know any of the culture behind the game or even in Lucis. What they wear may seem normal when we get the game and venture through Lucis. They changed the look of Regis 15 years before the game takes place. Regis might be clean shaven and have a hair cut next time we see them. The suits apparently are still in the game as well.

You mean to tell me the little skulls on Noct's shirt piss you off? Or even the one on Cor? I cant explain the "one" glove on Noct. Honestly though again I think it looks fine. When playing the game im not going to think "I cant play this! That one glove I cant take seriously"

It has nothing to do with being FF or a JRPG. It has to do they used an actual japanese clothing company to design the clothing. According to the Lucis lore Cor is a living legend but seeing him wear Roen clothing feels contradicting. Regis is changed entirely. There is a concept art of present Noctis with Regis and he looks the same.

None of it pisses me off. I played the demo just fine. Doesn't stop the fact that I don't like it.

This is presumably one of the first open areas in the game. Probably right beside Lucis, it's called Lucil.

We're probably going to get some sci-fi influence like what you see with those towers. Further on we'll probably see more fantastical elements.

I want
6-BL_BO7_6.png

this artist to get a crack at a modern game. Won't happen because we need more boyband, jpop nonsense, but whatever. Square used to have so much diversity with their artists, but it's all gone. At least on the musical side they still have Hamauzu and I believe Shinomura... but at once point they had Uematsu and Mitsuda, along with Sakimoto.

I like their way of having Nomura draw modern/futuristic style FF, while having Yoshida draw more old school medieval style FF. I don't want Nomura doing medieval FF and I don't want Yoshida doing modern/futuristic FF.

The problem was that last gen we had 3 lightning games shoved to us and Yoshida's game was used on MMO, so it has been a while since we got Yoshida's single player FF game.

Hopefully FFXVI is has Yoshida's art. Although he doesn't work for SE anymore he can still do it on contract bases I guess.

The Roen designs, clumsily throwing around Latin, invoking Shakespeare, trying to emulate mafia families.

It's pretty safe to just assume all the pretentious/tryhard shit is Nomura, since most of it is.

Soon we will inform you when we release the release date.
I knew Kagari was not joking but hearing those words directly from Tabata really hurts. Then it's pretty much confirmed that no release date will be given at Pax, they'll really announce when they'll announce the release date there :(.

I just wish we had these designs still. Noctis can stay the same but the rest should go back. Fuck the Roen collaboration.
This actually did look really good. Like way better than what we've got now.

"Only" is a bit strong to me. Because good God, do I love Aqua, Aya Brea and FFVII. Dissidia is also amazing.

I remember they hired a countdown for the JP date and for the western date, they actually hired a host and shot a video.

You have to wonder how big a deal they'll make this launch. 'Cause if you go too big, you call attention to how long it took to actually release, haha.

I'm lttp but what is the significance of this painting?

It's a painting inside the game that has been painted by some master artist hundreds of years ago, and is religion related.

It portrays a part of the "bible" of FFXV world, where chosen ones (a king and certain bloodline is mentioned so = Regis' descendants) fight against the darkness.

So maybe it'll be on a wall in some museum or church when we play the game.

O'er rotted Soil, under blighted Sky,
A dread Plague has Wicked has wrough

In the Light of the Gods, Sword-Sworn at his Side,
'Gainst the Dark the King's Battle is fought

From the Heavens high, to the Blessed below,
Shines the Beam of a Peace long besought

"Long live thy Line and these Stones divine,
For the Night when All comes to Naught"

Cosmogony 15:2, Nadir

You talking about XIII? I kinda remember that video announcing the release date...then my...sixteen year-old self (or thereabouts) imported it via playasia despite not speaking a lick of japanese. Still beat it though.

I feel like they'll announce it at PAX or TGS (maybe window at PAX "Autumn 2016" then TGS gets dates) but I feel like the best way would be to announce release date soon and then at each event they're at reveal a little bit then tease what's next so "We hope you enjoyed PAX's demonstration of *insert thingy here* and look forward to TGS where we'll be debuting a new story trailer and featuring Accordo gameplay".

If we're lucky it'll be as simple as it sounds where they come to PAX, say they'll announce the date at TGS, and then do so.

If we're lucky.

That sounds too remarkably simple given the convolutedness of this entire game's history! I want to be an optimist but my hopes are set lowwwwww.

Niflheim has the same name origin as Nibelheim.

Though, I'm not sure how true to the name the locations' "geographical attributes" will be reflected. A part of me think that sometimes names like these are chosen just because they sound cool. But who knows, maybe we will get a misty region. I don't think Lucis reflect it's name sake, though. Lucis, for "Light" is just a city. City of lights? Maybe, but every city is a "city of lights". I personally think it's named so because of the theme of light in the FF series. Noctis's family and his ancestral warriors might be considered FFXV's take on "Warriors of Light".

What about Lestallum? Anybody know what that means? Both Accordo(to agree with; harmonize) and Altissia(the highest) have no real ties to their location. It's not like the country was called Aquataria.

I think there is some meaning, not necessarily geographical or physical ones, but also symbolical ones.

Lucis, Accordo, Niflheim, Solheim and Tenebrae are nations which might carry more meaning to their names than the cities.

Lucis might portray the light their bloodline has gained from the gods.
Accordo might portray the harmony/peace they're striving for, and they might be neutral policy-wise.

Rest... well I'd just like to see the places first.

I just realised this poem sets up the premise for the game.

The first verse claims the Wicked have essentially poisoned the land (rotted soil, blighted sky). Whether this is a supernatural force, or Nifleheim is up for intepretation.

The second verse is clearly referring to Noctis with his friends (sword-sworn). The 'Light of the Gods' seems to be referring to either Etro (or equivalent) or Summons or past Kings looking down on him. A 'Kings' battle is being fought - hints at Noctis being the new, and potentially last, king.

The third verse is more vague, but I think it refers to either Etro or the Summons - heavens high (the Summons) to the Blessed below (Noctis and co). The Beam of Peace could refer to Noctis' ability to summon Archaens, or just a metaphor for everyone in the world wanting peace.

The fourth verse is almost certainly referring to the line of Lucian Kings and the Lucian Crystals (and potentially other Crystal). It implies that each Lucian King is destined to survive until the very end - long live your line until the end when everything is destroyed/comes to naught.

The verse seems to be more Revelations than Genesis, going by the Bible allegory.

None of the people you mentioned are Square Enix employees.

also Shinomura lol

Yeah, I exaggerated it a bit. I do like the design of Yuna (X, not X-2) Auron and Jecht as well as Lightning, Sazh and Fang. Nomura's work on FFVI's Shadow and Setzer are also good, not to mention his monster design work in FFV and VIII. Sora's in the original KH design also look decently simple and whimsical. Then it comes all black and overdesigned. Worth mentioning that Stella looks great as well.

Why do I feel like they are much farther along than what they have shown of? Strange marketing/PR. This thread has been proof of that tho.

The 70-80% doesn't necessarily mean in a linear fashion. You probably can play the game from start to finish but the remaining 30% could be polish, content for areas, design of areas and any number of things. They're much farther along than they've given an impression of, but it doesn't mean you'd want them to release it tomorrow :P

Well that's what they've been saying, but many think they're lying because they don't know how to PR.

To some what they haven't seen = can't exist, for some reason.

"we wanted to get everyone caught up with low expectations so you'll be pleasantly surprised. please look forward to future updates. (laughs)"

The whole reason the marketing is frustrating is just that - they have stuff they could show, but they aren't.

At least for me. I'm not really skeptical about them actually making progress, I'm frustrated they're not putting more of it out there. Or at the very least, going silent. If you're going to keep trotting out Duscae, save us all some time and say nothing.

Apparently new press release shots

can't understand why they didn't show some of these gameplay in motion at gamescom....very strange indeed.

Because they really did a bad PR job, in the past year they haven't really talked about things we didn't really already know about.

FFXV is in a really weird place where you release too much info, people bitch that the game's been pretty much spoiled, and you release too little, you get this.

Why do they have to make Ignis so obviously the Judas of the group. Ever since the Versus days they've always played him up as a turn coat, not to mention he carries a dagger.

Why can't it be Prompto? I wouldn't expect that idiot.

Et tu Iggy...

I really hope that's not the case. It would ruin the whole friendship theme for a cheap plot twist.

That's a bit disingenuous. It couldn't have been that hard to show a few new areas if they've made any kind of decent progress in the past 11 months. Maybe a small look at the caves, a small town, and a look at a slightly weirder environment like the one in the TGS 2014 trailer with red skies and dust. At the very least don't end your gameplay session on a game over after less than two minutes. It was a complete miscalculation on the marketing team's part.

Eh, I've got my own opinion on how the ATR ended up, but it's easy to go too far in the other direction. How much can you show over the course of a year (implied - or more, or less, who knows) without either running out of steam or ending up showing too much.

Dawn represents the start of the story, and was used for the start of the marketing campaign. Regardless of whether the backlash was anticipated or not, regardless of whether it's deserved or not, it kinda 'makes sense' in a rather straightforward way.

After how explosive the 2013 E3 trailer was I think overall expectations were very very different from what they showed at Gamescom.
