I recently watched quite an interesting making of -documentary. It's called Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. Basically that movie production is a prime example of everything going wrong during the shoot.

I work in the tv & film industry so these documentaries are quite fascinating to me. Some other good ones I've seen recently were of the Kingsman and the Peter Jackson LoTR & Hobbit film series.

I'd be happy to hear if any others on GAF enjoy watching these and if you guys have any favorites!

The Apocalypse Now one is pretty good.... Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse

Also American Movie shows the trials and tribulations of realizing the great indie film 'Coven'.

Lost in La Mancha is really good. It's about the doomed production of Terry Gilliam's Don Quixote adaptation. It used to be on netflix a while ago, but not sure anymore.

Some of my favourites...

Under Pressure - Making The Abyss
Behind The Planet Of The Apes
The Shark Is Still Working - Making of Jaws
Terror Takes Shape - Making The Thing

There are a set of feature-length, fan-made documentaries that are worth tracking down:
Star Wars Begins
Building Empire
Returning to Jedi
Raiding the Lost Ark

Under Pressure : The making of The Abyss

it is pretty amazing to see how they made that movie and the mad genius that is Jim Cameron.

Some others on the technical aspects of cinema that I've enjoyed:

The Cutting Edge - all about editing
The Changing Shape of Cinema - short, but interesting history of aspect ratios
Side By Side - Keanu Reeves documentary about the evolution of digital filming

I just watched Lost Soul myself yesterday. Subbing to this thread as I'd also like to watch out for some documentaries like that.

Cheers guys, these are at least going to my to-do list, alongside with the Making of Aliens!

Final Cut: The Making and Unmaking of Heaven's Gate is an another great documentary of a nightmarish production! Highly recommended.

Burden of Dreams, about the making of Herzog's Fitzcarraldo (you don't need to have seen the film, the real story is even more insane)

Empire of Dreams (Star Wars)

Dangerous Days (Blade Runner)

There was a 2 hour documentary on Making Star Wars that came together with the DVD set. I don't know what it was called but it was the best Making Of ai've ever seen. For some curious reason it was not included in the BluRay collection though.

More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy

Document of the Dead

The Making of Prometheus is pretty good. I didn't enjoy the film itself, but the documentary is pretty damn extensive. (About 5 hours long, excluding additional clips etc.)

Ridley Scott making-of pieces are usually worth watching overall IMO.

Thank you, I'll definitely check it out.

And it seems I must see the Apocalypse Now one, too.

For which film? The Phantom Menace? I own them all in DVD, I think I can pinpoint which one...

William Shatner Presents: Chaos on the Bridge -- About Star Trek The Next Generation and the numerous challenges its faced including clashing with creator Gene Roddenberry

Definitely The Abyss.

What's crazy is that the Abyss doco doesn't mention the craziest event where Cameron came very close to dying and saved himself when his Assistant Director and safety diver both fucked up.

There was an additional DVD with that Making Of that came with the collection of all 6 films. The documentary included the Making Off of all 3 original Star Wars movies.

Ha, I do own it.

I'm gonna give it a rewatch now since I went through all that effort to find it.
