Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

on the other hand, its a racing game which Phil Spencer said was the hardest due to licensing

Out of interest, how come licensing and publisher support is a factor in 360 backwards compatibility anyway? Systems with hardware-based BC like the Wii just play everything with no fuss, and even an emulation-based system like the PS3's PS1 disc support seemingly plays that console's entire library. Why do Microsoft need to get third parties to sign off on their games being supported, or navigate around licensing?

Sooo... WTF is going on with my Gears save? First when I transferred it to the cloud from I lost everything somehow. Now, I just checked and it says I have zero COG tags... But after I started back up on Xbox One I collected every tag in Act 1... Is the latter issue something that could happen with Gears 1 before, or what? Because my campaign progress/checkpoint is fine, so I have no idea what would reset my COG tags.

Edit: What the fuck... So all of my unlocked missions have been relocked, except for the mission for my current checkpoint and of course the prologue. What the hell is going on?

Gears got an update. Can play DLC maps now.

Oh that's cool makes believe that getting the DLC for other games won't be a problem, great news for us and the companies as people will be tempted to splash the cash on the DLC.

Baked into the TU or as a separate download though? (Edit: Checked, it's part of the TU itself) Gears maps are free IRC, so if it's the prior, then this wouldn't mean much for other games in the short term.

Because on Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 they are directly reading the software off the disc. On Xbox One all Xbox 360 software, disc-based or not, is technically being redistributed as it all requires an emulator shell to run. This redistribution plus the fact that the package has technically been altered (even if the actual game code itself is untouched) due to having a packed-in emulator makes it more in line with the Virtual Console as far as legalities go, even if it's just being used to play games that have already been purchased.

Lol.

SE is going to stop supporting console (PS2/XBOX360) clients for FFXI starting March 2016.

So we will only experience this BC for like 3 months.

Maybe it's being tested because it's unusual in that It downloads files internally

Ahh I see, that makes sense! Thanks for the explanation :)

It's also a bit clever security-wise since this method doesn't allow anybody to load their own custom Xbox 360 code into the One's emulator in an attempt to break into the One's OS. They came up with a way to quite literally air gap the game disc from the console.

Word. I've tried to explain this a few times.

Portal : Sill alive

This is a must-play even if you owned Portal on disc for HL:Orange Box. It adds a number of challenges to all of the Portal levels that really makes it worth buying and playing again... Bronze/Silver/Gold challenges for each level. Added a whole level of Portal gameplay that I never thought even possible.

This morning I wondered if Shadow Complex would've been made backwards compatible but then I thought "no way...it'll probably be at the bottom of their list". Then I checked...omg

BC is the killer app I needed to get me to buy a one. I'll be looking forward to any big sale on the system

I'm hoping the first Peggle gets BC. I beat everything on that game except one challange anf it has always bothered me. It was the one where you had to win like 10 games in a row. If you lost one round, you had to start all over again.

Can't seem to sign into Xbox Live with Gears of War to play online. I am online with Xbox One, and everything works, but can't get Gears of War to connect.

So I had Gears already installed and working and now it has an update but it's taking forever. Is it actually downloading the full game again for this recent update? Can these games not be patched like current X1 games?

Sorry I have nothing constructive to add, I'm just posting to say that if you saw my 360 digital game library you'd know that I'm severely jealous of those of you in the OS previous program.

Unfortunately Microsoft did not grandfather me from the 360 program, probably because I did nothing to contribute on the feedback forums. I understand but I'm still really bummed about it. 😞

Progress tracker seems borked. Seemed like it was taking forever for me, but then it completed at 10%.

Just tried Gears 1. Looks like there's no way to download the DLC maps?

They're baked into the newest TU itself.

I believe the only people who got "grandfathered in" were those who were in the 360 preview program and who had an Xbox One at the time the Xbox One preview program launched. After that first group it became by referral only. So if you didn't have a One at the time, that's likely why. Also, there's a topic for requesting invites for the preview program if you want in.

Same exact thing is happening to me. I think it is just not working right now.

Try going into the XBO settings and wiping all of your Xbox 360 profile and save data. Then reboot and restart. It should resync your info and work.

dlc is not supported yet

DLC is supported, so long as it is included in the emulator image.

What's not supported at the moment is that the emulator has no ability to access XBLM.

Xbox Live is working again, didn't need to do the above steps. Thanks for the help though

Found the thread and thanks for the explanation!

I'm not sure what that was but it got me laughing! I've always found glitches like this to be down right hilarious.

Sorry I'm sure this has been asked by numerous people, but how do I get in the Preview program? I wasn't planning to get an Xbox One, but the Best Buy TV deal was too good. Thanks!

There were audio problems in PGR4 when installed on HDD so they probably would need to patch a game in order to make it BC.

That's a tough scenario. What if the problem is the game rather than the BC? Do you invest in the patch? Hmmm.

I want PGR4 too.

Not sure where they're getting some of those games but they have a list of 130 games that might be BC at launch, seems fairly reasonable outside of a few odd ones like Prototype 1&2.

You need to be invited, there's a topic http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1064912&highlight=preview for invites

The author is just presenting his "best guess" as "fact." And did a CYA move with a small disclaimer.

Basically that source is just as accurate as any other random Internet poster.

I believe that Borderlands 1 is going to be one of the next BC games.
Saw Major Nelson playing it, and he hasn't played any other not BC games recently, so...

been playing toys soldier, pretty enjoyable. runs great for the most part.

should have ported the cold war scenario, the w1/scifi mix on x1 is pretty lame and boring.

What do you mean? Toy Soldiers: Cold War has been available via BC in preview just as long as the original has.

Still not showing Gears Of War 360 for me despite pre-ordering the Ultimate Edition. Tried hard reboots and logging out etc, still nothing.

Hexic and N+ show up though so the BC component is working.

you have to own it previously to get it to work in preview
