I'm surprised by this, I didn't really think there'd be many people with strong feelings about that album. It wasn't bad or anything, I mean I listened to it about 4 times I think, but it just seemed bland.

Edit: Also should say I was pretty excited to listen to it the first time because I'd "discovered" Jay ROck through his verse on Money Trees, which was outrageous. But my predominant reaction was disappointment. There was nothing approaching that level on the album, although it didn't do anything strikingly bad.

lol I think everybody had that same reaction. And ODB is my favorite member of the Wu. Without the hook and tempo change up so often, the song would be pretty decent. That "hook" experiment needed more time in the lab. That beat is my shit though.

I feel you Des, when I do find something I like it's hard to even want to talk about it on gaf anymore. In terms of finding music I've ended up going to the source for a lot of things now too.

The thing with Jay's new song is the fact that it's not bad, but that chorus don't match at all. It's like if Kendrick Lamar started rapping like 2 Short...nevermind that would be dope, but still....dude should have known better than to be sounding like ODB and failing hard at it.
 
Part of me can't help but be kinda excited for Jay Rock. Maybe I'm missin' California too much, maybe I just have shitty taste...*shrug* I do kinda agree with Des despite myself. Rock is more fun as a feature killer. I think he could put out something good, but man you trying to get people hyped and you drop that turd?

Like I said, I hope it's like Kendrick's i where the single version sounds like shit and the real version is much better.
But probably not.
I did enjoy the other singles though

Jay Rock comes off as the guy going way out of his way to project himself as the 1 dimensional "gangster" of the group when really that shit isn't even marketable these days. I'm gonna assume that's why his projects always sound like such a creative struggle compared to the rest of TDE.
 
There's a shred of truth in Des' point. Like Game, Jay Rock is one of those west coast rappers who doesn't have the melody or knack for songwriting like more versatile artists like Quik/Del/Snoop/Kendrick/etc. Still I feel like he has such great access to dope song shit - great beats, good in-house features, etc - that he should be able to make a dope project. Follow Me Home has a variety of flaws IMO but it showed more than enough promise to get me excited about him as a rapper.

Rock is going to have access to the best production he's ever had. He has SZA, Kendrick, and Q for hooks. He's had years to find himself as an artist. I'm going to assume he can do something dope with all that shit.
 
Fuck it I'm hyped for Rock's album. Despite the shitty chorus, all the tracks that came out even the snippet were certified bangers. Fresh change over Follow Me Home which I actually liked....

I guess I'm a TDE stan and proud to admit it.

Everything about this post is wrong, goddamn it really is an intangible, blind faith for Rock, huh? Dude is so completely unremarkable in every sense of the word that it really is baffling to me.

He does not occupy a unique lane so effectively nothing is missing when he's gone (and Game does everything he does monumentally better, even at his worst as mentioned prior), the coast is the strongest it's been in a minute so it's not like we need him as a portion of that, the notion that he's a feature killer is super laughable as it implies dude does that on a consistent basis (let us pray one time for the GKMC babies), has a mediocre to bad track record to boot.

Des is right, y'all might as well be giving Troy Ave this shot with the benefit of the doubt given to Rock, at least Troy Ave has some character even if it's being a cornball. Y'all better be coddling Skeme, Nipsey, and all of those other ultra generic generic West Coast dudes who can semi-rap but lack pretty much every other part of the package (most importantly output) because nothing sets dude apart from those West Coast weirdos. Either that or nobody tells me a cosign doesn't mean shit again.

Rock is one of those rappers that would have been the shit in late 90s/early 2000s because folks really could go for some gangsta shit. Nowadays, he's considered average at best when in reality dude is really a dope rapper. He kills his features on every song and even the highlight of TDE posse cuts. I know his new album will bang and will probably be a solid 7, if not a 8.

You're also underestimating Jay Rock tremendously. I don't think he's that great really, I don't even like Follow Me Home, but with all of these under his belt, he's a god in front of the wastemen you're referring to.

A hypothetical version of The Game where I don't have to be subjected to the bizarre combination of meta-rapping. dick riding, and general you're-knocking-on-40-years-old-still-acting-like-a-gangster seems like a net positive.
 
Just finished Compton. Late to the party I know...Its alright. I find it over-produced...with the beat being filled with stuff going on and about 3 people doing almost every chorus - some with autotune, some without . I just don't enjoy it.

Plus,. Dr. Dre is almost unrecognisable. Which is disappointing as I think he has a great voice for rap music.

Yeah I think I need someone to tell me who Dre is on those tracks. It is a very difficult process and the critical reception towards the album is bewildering.
 
No lie Dre needs to stop messing around with this vocal arrangements. Dude going to fuck around and sound like Jigsaw on the next feature.

So seeing Straight Outta Compton yesterday got me feeling pretty nostalgic for hip hop. Just impulse bought a $100 Audio Technica turntable off Amazon and I bought XXX with it.

I'm officially in the game, brehs.

His albums are still varied, not all of it is gangster tracks. The appeal to me is that he isn't going for what the current market is. That means he makes music that he wants and not forced just to make money.
