Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

What is concerning imo is that the reviewer mentions he had to farm to beat a specific mission because he needed more powerful gear. I hope this was not done to encourage micro transactions and that gmp requirements are fair.

They're having to rush through the game, so chances are you'd just get it through normal progression.

Because for the author, TPP uses the same game structure as PW.
But I'm not agree with him.
yeah i think i disagree with the author too on that.

PW was a huge departure and anything but purist material. if we were getting another linear and story heavy game i'd say that's for the purists, not this.

I guess it's a game that fulfills on everything Kojima has ever wanted to be (Kojima's practically said as much) but has been held back by technical constraints/vision etc.
i'm certain that's what the game is, but i doubt the author of that review was referring to 'purity' in that way.

as for the farming of missions for develop new equipment, wasn't this from the same publication that said they basically ignored mother base?

also this. i don't think the reviewer experience will be 1:1 with retail player experience.

So, did the review have the ending ? Because if someone reviews a game and gives it a score without even seeing the ending, I couldn't give less shit.

Really makes you wonder, since the MGSV bootcamp copies apparently do not have the ending. I think that the review copies that were sent out to reviewers probably do though.

PW flashbacks all over again. Time to grind for S rank recruits.

1) Is that you in your avi? Your hair is...crazy :P

2) Did you attend the event as well? When you say "doesn't understand the story" is that because they didn't see everything or because the "core" story is told through the cut scenes but the "Details/side stories" are in cassettes etc?

1/ Yes
2/ No, but if you read his review, he clearly says for him it's "an opaque, elliptic and metaphoric story" ..."reserved for few privileged people"

It's curious because yesterday people were saying no main story mission was gated behind that sorta thing, but it would obviously be quite tough if you ignored it. Ergo speedruns are possible but bloody hard.

Because I've always felt that Big boss's story was complete with MGS3, I didn't need to know every single detail of his life to understand why he turned bad. So I've always felt PO, PW and TPP were unnecessary. But the glorious trailers really intrigued me and I thought there would be incredible plot twists in the game. I don't care for the sandbox gameplay.

Now if all other reviews say the story is excellent and mindblowing, then I'm buying the game. But if the consensus is that the story isn't conclusive and raises more questions than answers, then nope, I'm out.

Exactly, that's why I'm not interested in the game anymore. I really wanted to, like put the game on easy and enjoy the story, but it's not that kind of game.

you mean MGS3's story didn't raise more questions than it answered?

But there was a review event in UK before the review event in LA. I don't know if Konami even sends out copies for review.

I'm sure Greg Miller's going to go apeshit over this game. Imagine if Peace Walker is your favourite game, and suddenly you're presented with THIS. I say 'suddenly', it's been a four-year wait. But still, he's gotta be in heaven.

It's also the problem with reviews that since they got review copies three days ago...cramming that much into such a sort space of time will always present a warped view of things.

This is hugely inportant and significantly effects the player's experience.

I've experienced it first hand as a reviewer. You never really 'play' the game - you force yourself through it to reach completion. Not always, but often, especially with long games and especially if it's not your full-time job. IRL if you like a game but don't find it THAT fun you shelve it until you feel like playing it again. As a reviewer? If you happen to be finding a bit of TPP 'tedious', you cant just muck about in the sandbox for a while and have fun or experiment with Mother Base stuff. You HAVE to keep pressing through for the 'completion'.

If this reviewer crammed in 40+ hours over 3 days, TO A DEADLINE, it's actually a miracle they still gave it such a high score! I've had my whole opinion on a game soured by one too-long session of 6 hours or so.

This is case-by-case, obviously. Not all review experiences are like this. But in a way that makes it worse. It's SO subjective. (Obviously.)

I believe they sent out review copies this week, at least to a few US game journalists, but I'm not positive. Yesterday someone linked a tweet from Jason Schreier at Kotaku saying that he chased the FEDEX guy down the street to get his copy of MGS5. I can't fin the tweet now so not sure if it's fake or he removed it.

Azdoune I can't read your spoiler tag or rather don't want to, when I don't know what your spoiler is about ^^

If that's the case, the review booth makes less sense without the ending.

If you haven't left the internet yet, now is the time.

He did remove it, but you can see a relative reply here: https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/634089379154276352

According to some YouTube commenters, the reviewer:

- didn't use a lot of the game's features (never touched Mother Base management, apparently never listened to any tapes)
- mainlined the story, skipping loads of missions

To me 17/20 is disappointing but I know nothing about this magazine so it means nothing to me. I expect the greatest game ever made. For me it's not that much a stretch because MGS1,3 and 4 are all 10s and are in my top 10 games ever. Plus I play MGS for the gameplay, not the story. I put 40 hours into GZ, this is made for me.

So as long as people with my perspective on the series love it I am sure it will live up to the hype.

When publishers send out review code (or I should say, organise review code) they tend to rate outlets in tiers, partially on reliability but mostly on hits. So for example if a publisher has limited copies of the game to send out, the "big sites" will get high priority, while the smaller sites might miss out, or instead be offered preview/review events to attend.

That may have happened here, where physical code did go out to a few outlets, but many others were invited to 'review events'.

So he focused on the main missions and yet it took him over 40 hours? That's quite long.. too long..

Well, it's a great game, with great gameplay, so the longer the better.

I had problems finishing TW3 and DA:I because the gameplay was just okay and they're both pretty long.

I wonder if the missions might have taken far longer for him if he hadn't touched Motherbase stuff and side-missions. He might not have been well enough equipped, that could've inflated his playtime. Not that I'm saying the games going to be short, but it feels odd to have a 40 hour main mission line in a game with this much optional content (that isn't an RPG).
