Never played Grim Fandango, thinking of picking it up.

Had a question though. A lot of the reviews or comments I see say the puzzles are annoying, frustrating, and nonsense. Do you guys agree? Or would the game be manageable by someone who doesnt have much adventure game experience? I really don't like having to check a guide/walkthrough

Grim Fandango is middle-of-the-road when compared to adventure games of the time. While there are a few shitty puzzles, it's not too bad. The interface will fight back at times, though.

If you're into adventure games for non-puzzle stuff, you should play it RIGHT NOW in spite of the occasional sticking point. You just won't find better voice acting and writing.

Puzzles are generally average-to-poor, but the writing really is top notch, and it's certainly a game that every p&c fan should play. Personally I think that there are only a few frustrating puzzles, the rest are poor because they're so easy.

Schafer really needs someone like gilbert or grossman with him to make a well rounded game I guess

Simon the Sorcerer is an absolute masterpiece. If any of you didn't play it... buy it now. And shame on you. It also aged extremely well, it's still beautiful and with great music. A joy to play but, if I remember correctly, it was quite hard and sometimes frustrating.
Simon 2 was fantastic as well, but the first one is still the best of the lot.
Simon 3 is absolute crap.

Waxworks was pretty good too, but it didn't probably aged as well as Simon.

Broken Sword 1 on my 17" Lappy screen leaves much to be desired. It looks good but the way my lappy outputs it makes me wish I'm playing this an a ye olde CRT monitor :P

You talking the remaster or original? You can mess with the renderer if it's ScummVM to make it look how you want it, pixelated or way too smooth.

I picked up JULIA Among the Stars during the Steam Summer sale based on recommendations in this thread, I've finally got around to playing it and, 3 hours into the game I'm really enjoying it. Thanks!

Uncovering the mystery is cool but there's too many things pointing at JULIA being the villain. It'll be interesting if my guess is correct.

Grabbed Armikrog for $17.30 off of GMG, NOW TO play the waiting game~

Original actually, would I find the scummvm emu it uses in its directory folder?

In all seriousness GAF, is the Police Quest series worth playing now; as in have they aged well?

I'm conflicted on this. It has great atmosphere but its gameplay is a bit too trial and error even by Sierra standards (and I do love Sierra games, though I know it's fashionable to hate on them lately).

The PQ games are very procedural. There is challenge, but it's less about figuring out how to solve random puzzles and more about how to react to different scenarios and do things in the proper order. This series gave me some of my earliest gaming experiences, so I'll always have a spot for it in my heart.

PQ1 hasn't aged too well but it's a fun game - the VGA version is probably "better" in terms of playability but the original version and its parser make that one a little more fun. PQ2 is the best of the series and maybe best SCI-0 game Sierra did. Some people dislike PQ3 but I rather love it for the cult-oriented story. As the PC Gamer article says, PQ4 isn't a good game but it's still worth playing - you can somewhat appreciate what Gates was trying to do.

While billed as a 'tactical simulation', I gotta throw a little love to SWAT. That game got terrible reviews, but the missions were kind of fun to play. I also liked the branching nature of each scenario. The problem with SWAT was that it was too much of a tedious simulation or training exercise and not enough of an actual game. The FMV was limiting for the gameplay, but I still think what they did with it was kind of neat.

This site has some great reading on the series: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/policequest/policequest.htm

Thanks for the info I'll pick them up during the next gog sale in this case =3

The only issue I have is with the main character's eyes...

Sweet Jesus it's beautiful, will always be one of my favourite games of all time.
Honestly, there are a couple of puzzles I just couldn't hack and used a guide for, but only a couple - like others have said, they're probably just shitty, but the rest of the game MORE than makes up for it.

OK so the game does run with SCUMMVM but I don't know how to apply graphical settings to BS1.

Hit F5 while in-game and push Return to Launcher. You'll see the game's name listed. Edit the game specifically, go to Graphics, and check Override Global Graphics Settings. You can use whatever engine you want to render and a whole host of other options.

If you're playing off GOG, make sure you use the shortcut that launches the game so that you're editing the right configuration info.

For those of you who are fans of The Journey Down, Skygoblin announced that they are launching a kickstarter for Chapter 3 in October. I was a big fan of the first two chapters so I am stoked for the upcoming final chapter.

Hello Gaf. I was just wondering about a game trailer I saw awhile back. It looked like a traditional point-and-click adventure game about a group of teens (?) witnessing mysterious events. I recall it having vector-style graphics and having some great VA. I think I haven't seen it on the OP but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway, about to play some Pendulo games starting with Yesterday. Depending on the mood, I might then proceed with the Runaway trilogy. Need to replenish my enthusiasm for pnc games.

I still enjoy replaying the Runaway series but playing Yesterday first might kill your want to play pnc games again lol It's very meh.

I've been playing the new King's Quest game. It's not much of an adventure game when it comes to puzzles and it has almost no LOOK commands (I love LOOK commands) but I'm still liking it a lot. The art style holds up a lot better than I thought after watching the reveal trailer and oh god the animation is great. Top tier voice acting as well.

It's basically a Princess Bride fan game.

I'm going to do a replay of Gabriel Knight 1, Gabriel Knight 2, Phantasmagoria 1, and Phantasmagoria 2. Wish me luck!

Soooo... just looked a bit at Contradiction - Spot the Liar. It looks absolutely great, but... I'm not a native english speaker and my spoken english isn't so good. Does this game have no subtitles?

There are subtitles, just hit Escape I think and you'll find the options menu
Or press the C key to turn on Captions :)

I just started it too and it seems like people are mostly liking it. Contradiction even got its own GAF thread. Like the poster above me said, you can easily turn on subtitles in options.

Oh, do I feel dumb now. I saw it at my friend's place, we both didn't notice... I'll check it again this evening. Thank you.

No love for GK3? :(

I remember, when I played Phantasmagoria 1 for the first time, how surprised I was about the game's length. It was released on 7 CDs and yet one could finish it in one evening.

I'm tossing out Phantasmagoria 1 since I realized that I completed it just this year.

I might be going for GK3 now.

Oh and I'm almost done with Phantasmagoria 2. It's not so bad, I enjoyed it myself. There's less stuff to do and it felt more like watching a movie. This game seems pretty racy during its time though.

Watching Spoony's P2 playthrough after finishing it is almost obligatory.
