Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

It was delayed until 2016. It's going to be released simultaneously on pc and consoles (first time for Daedelic iirc) and it uses a new 3D approach so i imagine they needed a longer development time for this one. I've been looking forward to it ever since it was announced.

Daedalic site says 2016, nothing more specific. It was also shown at gamescom

http://www.daedalic.de/en/game/Silence

A couple months ago there was a call for closed beta testers. According to the dev blog the closed beta ended one month ago (1, 2)

I suppose that doesn't answer your question of when it's coming out. I just checked Daedalic's site, and...

edit - already posted while I was typing up my reply. :)

Thanks guys! Didn't know it was taking a 3D approach and was also surprised when I did a search and saw it was hitting consoles. I got the first one in a humble bundle a while bag and really enjoyed it (besides the very jarring VA by the MC). Now I just have to decide if I want to get it on Steam since I have the first one on there or on PS4 so I can play on my giant tv. Guess I have a while to think about it.

Well lookit what we got here

"Yesterday" is on sale (along with some other games from that studio) on Steam.

Never heard of it, yay or nay, what say you PnC GAF?

I love the developer's other games but Yesterday was a disappointment for me. Too short, too easy. Interesting story and the characters are ok but it ended out of nowhere. That was the worst part, it's like they couldn't afford to continue working on it or something, lol.

Ok, so nevermind about Yesterday then... the Runaway games eh? I have considered them before but never bit since i am backlogged to hell in games anyway but then at this price hmm... are they of the same quality all 3 of them?

i liked yesterday a lot. Its a 4-5 hour game that tells a story that felt very complete to me. It was interesting and well told and well designed. Definitely very worth the current 2.50 price.

Oh god I love this.

Even though I'm very happy with Curse of Monkey Island, I still want to see Ron Gilbert's idea for the third game. It's nice to hear that he still wants to work on it, even though getting the rights from Disney may prove impossible.

Yeah, I get that he wants to put out his own take on what would be MI3, but COMI is a fantastic game. Feel free to retcon MI4 instead :P

The first two Runaway games are really good, I think. Especially the second. Third one not so much but still worth going through. Also, The Next Big Thing is a pretty good adventure game by Pendulo.

As for Yesterday, despite my issues with it I still think it's worth going through for a very low price. Part of my frustration is that I paid full price when it came out. But the story, characters, and locales are good.

After Yesterday it felt like they had no money anymore. They were trying to make ports left and right to scrounge up money it felt like. But I guess they're back on track somehow. Although the game is tied to Yesterday :/ I wish they would do more stuff like Runaway etc

They don't necessarily need to sell it. They could grant a temporary license. Like how Hairbrained works with FASA's old properties and how Yu Suzuki is able to work on Shenmue 3.

There's really not a lot that changed in the Monkey Island universe after 2 apart from Guybrush getting married to Elaine (although that was certainly one point that Gilbert was against). Curse had a explanation for the ending of Monkey 2 in a way which might get in the way of Gilbert's original idea, but frankly I prefer the idea that the anachronistic pirate universe is 'real' and the theme park segments were an illusion by LeChuck.

I wouldn't be against a Monkey Island sequel by Ron Gilbert, but I'd only be really interested if he gets Grossman and Schafer involved again - because it was the writing that made the originals so special, and they did the bulk of it. I don't think there's any real reason to ignore 3, 4 and 5 (and that would allow them to use Murray), but it wouldn't keep me awake at night if that ends up happening anyway. 'Canon' doesn't mean much to me, I just care about the individual games being good.

Of course, it's unlikely we'll ever get another Monkey Island at all, but Double Fine - with the help of Sony's funding - seems to have a good enough relationship with Disney right now for the remakes. If it happens, I'll bet it'll be through that same deal, if Gilbert is willing to come back to Double Fine for one more project.

Edit: Some people who used to be at Telltale and who are now working on Day of the Tentacle at Double Fine actually confirmed that Telltale wanted to do more Monkey Island games after their first one (which explains some loose ends such as Morgan's fate), but that it didn't sell nearly as much as expected. The remake of the first game, which came out at the same time, stole their thunder, as that one actually sold a lot better. That was also their reason to move towards more recent/relevant licenses.

As of right now I'm guessing they'll stick with remakes for a while. Who knows, maybe they'll make enough money so that they'll allow Double Fine to do a sequel or two at some point.

Well, part one and part two being rubbish probably didn't help. It wasn't until Lair of the Leviathan that the game got good.

Even when it got better, it still wasn't very good. I don't think Telltale has a good Monkey Island in them.

But I could be mistaken! I like a few of their recent visual novels! I just don't trust them with puzzley adventure games.

But can some of the original team still pull it off either? I personally thought Broken Age was a big letdown given their pedigree, but would buy a new Monkey Island day one regardless.

So I guess Stasis really is the real deal? Anyone finish it can comment on how it stands up?

Playing the Jurassic Park Telltale game. Yeah it's fucken as atrocious as you have read it is. There are QTEs for everything including looking at dino footprint tracks or picking up something. The voice acting, character model and animations is amateurish at best. I paid for it so i might aswell beat it.

Can't be as bad as the Law & Order game? That one sucked hard.

It's worse than that. The Law & Order game mostly suffered from poor presentation and pacing but at least the gameplay didn't grind on your nerves. If the question and answer system wasn't shit and the voice acting was better the Law & Order game could of being amazing.

Also this Bundle has some PnC's (2 Teddy Floppy Ear games and Violette Remastered)

I know Violett was poorly received but i am not sure how much the Remastered version improves things because Steam and Metacrtic keep all the negative reviews after an update.

Bundle is more worth it for the Frederic games lol.

Eh. Finished it today and wasn't really all that impressed.

The puzzles require little thought, the flavour text is repetitive, the voice acting is poor, and you can only play it in a darkened room because everything is different shades of black. The isometric backgrounds are lovely, but even in the art there's some poor technical moments; towards the very end of the game there's a seat you sit on that swivels you into a vehicle, except your character doesn't swivel at the same time as the seat does...

It was fine, but it's neither interestingly creepy enough in its story nor fun enough to play for me to really recommend it.

Just started Fran Bow today, WOW. One of the most unique pnc games I've played. Admittedly I haven't really kept up with the newer crop of stuff but this game is just hitting all the right notes for me. Between this, Stasis, Layers of Fear, and the forthcoming Soma I'm in horror heaven this year.

this has been an excellent adventure year. Book of unwritten tales 2, anna's quest, technobabylon, dead synchronicity, the new KQ, fran bow, stasis... All top notch games. And then we've got a promising crop around the corner, including armikrog and dropsy in a few days.

Have you seen Duskers and Solarix? Duskers isn't exactly horror, but it nails that uneasy sci-fi tone, and Solarix is supposed to be fun. And Caffeine is coming out this year too

I've seen your posts about Duskers but not sure the art style is my thing, I appreciate minimalist stuff but I like my graphics when it comes to anything suspense or horror related. Haven't seen Solarix will check it out, played an early build of Caffeine on the Rift awhile back seemed pretty cool.

I don't think Duskers is much of a horror game but it's still pretty great. Or at least it should be when it's finished.

Is there a term for games that are played with the same exact interface that the person you're portraying would use? You know, like Uplink or Her Story? Because I love those games.

I'll give it a chance. As to your question I don't think there is one for games like that, you could use "sim" I suppose but that gets pretty redundant when discussing certain titles in general.

Anybody know if starting a new game of Fran Bow overwrites the current save? Wanted to show the intro to my gf but don't wanna lose my progress.

yes if you click new game it tells you that the old save will be over-written. You can choose to start from the other chapters though, so if you wanted to stop at the beginning of a chapter, and then resume after watching the beginning, you could.

Can anyone recommend recent(ish) adventure games in the style of Dreamfall (can be point and click but doesn't have to), for a friend of mine. His only requirement is that the graphics can't be "pixelated". Weird wish, but what can I do.

Life is Strange is similar to Dreamfall. Low impact puzzles, lots of dialogue and atmosphere. I love both games.

There was a real short indie game I played a few months ago in the style of blade runner where you're a bounty hunter waiting for the hit to come home to assassinate. You have to break into their apartment, get info, and set traps. It was a really fun concept that I hope someone turns into a longer experience. Can't remember the name though, it was definitely pnc.

The Armikrog OT is up for anyone interested.

Badass Inc?

Badass Inc, and yes the devs are planning on expanding it

Yup that's the one! There was another one in a similar cyber punk style that was super short, you bust into some disco to take down a target, but it's all action oriented, with some light cover mechanics and a pistol as the main weapon. Seemed like more of an interactive art piece/movie. Excellent pixel art too iirc.
The Last Night, and yes the devs are expanding it into an open-world cinematic platformer
