Point n Click Adventure GAF 2015 - Back with a vengeance

What does everyone feel about the new King's Quest?

I really like it, especially the humour. Puzzles are very easy though. Interested to see what the do with the player choice aspect.

They really need to add optional CRT filter shaders to these games that are trying so hard to look like Amiga/ST/CGA. Even our best RGB monitors back then added a LOT of softening compared to today's displays.

I think they look fine myself - bear in mind some of the bg's in the video are wip's as ron had to put this together soon after mark ferrari joined the project, so they don't have much final art. The Quickie Pal screen is the only one we know that is fairly final (just missing the last pass), and that one seems good to me.

So my wife wants to play a point-and-click with a murder mystery atmosphere. Anyone have any recommendations? (We've played most of the Broken Sword games, and just about everything by Wadjet Eye - Blackwell, Resonance, etc.)

Gray Matter is really good

I'll give it a try! Thanks. I also just realized that I hadn't thought to click the "Mystery" tag on Steam, which is giving me a few more ideas.

Try Cognition or Gabriel Knight if you want serial killer and murder mysteries. Both are on Steam and GoG.

Cruise for a Corpse?
Not sure if it runs on modern systems, though.

Or maybe one of the Sherlock Holmes games? They're quite good (ok, I've played only one but I've enjoyed it).

Also The Last Express has that sort of atmosphere.

I am playing through the Dig right now and man did I forgot a bunch of stuff.
But I really liked how Maggie talks about 'memories' and how they may not necessarily be stored in the brain, and that our brain is sort of like the process of memories and what makes the body move etc.

Some really good writing in there.

Also people complain about knot puzzle in Broken Age have apparently blocked the memory of this game's Fossil Puzzle :V

Not sure it fits in with "point and click" but any recommendations similar to Valiant Hearts? This game is incredible!!

Valiant Hearts is indeed amazing - I picked it up during the Steam summer sale. Beautiful game with deep, emotional storytelling and really fun puzzle-solving.

In terms of storytelling, Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons might interest you. I haven't played it yet, but the story is supposed to be quite good. Controller is highly recommended.

If you're more interested in story-driven 2D games, I've heard good things about Never Alone and Ori and the Blind Forest. The Swapper is also a fantastic 2D puzzle game with killer sci-fi atmosphere and storytelling.

The Cave is a pretty good platformer adventure that plays similarly to Valiant Hearts in terms of puzzles and interaction with the environment. Not much there in terms of story.

As far as games with classic point-and-click mechanics and similar types of storytelling as VH, maybe Machinarium? The Whispered World and The Night of the Rabbit are also visually beautiful with pretty good stories.

I'm about 2 hours in and love it! The characters are great and the comedy and drama move the story along. I only played KQ V and never got passed the desert. I liked V, but as an 8 year old, it was too obtuse for me. In fact, I'd say it was anti-player. The reboot takes all the trolling from the DOS era and replaces it with meaningful choice. At least I hope it does. I guess they could still troll us in future chapters.
Music is extraordinary and the animation is good too.

After a 10 year hiatus, I'm back to pc gaming, so finally i can read through this thread with no regrets. One of my favorite genres has been locked away in the pc platform.

Actually a bunch of recent PnC games got released on Consoles such as Broken Age and Grim Fandango.

So I had no idea Paul Cuisset (Flashback) released a new game back in May...Subject 13, on Steam and GOG. Anyone play? It looks pretty good and has some good feedback on GOG. Going to check it out.

As a ps4 owner, I know. Yet classic pixelated p&c haven't. Or even ones like deponia. like it or not,the pc has a lot more options, and I'm going to enjoy the ride.

Still looking for a somewhat short, not too hard PnC to ease back into the genre after not having played one in ages (the last was Dreamfall like 2 years ago)

About how long is Gray Matter? I just checked my Steam library and that may be something decent for me hmmm...

about 10-12ish hours from what i remember.
How short are you looking for?

Gray Matter is probably 10+ hours. Great game.

Some recommendations:

A Golden Wake is about 4 hours long. Decent story and not very difficult. If you like the other AGS/Wadjet Eye games you'll probably enjoy it.

The Samaritan Paradox is another good AGS game (not published by Wadjet) - I really loved the story in this one. Roughly 3-4 hours long.

Oknytt is kind of an overlooked gem - it's based on Scandinavian folklore and has great atmosphere. Puzzles aren't too difficult.

Journey of a Roach is really good one, too. It's kind of wacky and charming at the same time. Thought bubbles are used in place of dialogue. Enjoyable and on the easier side, but with a good mix of puzzles.

The Inner World is another charming game. It's a bit longer than the aforementioned but is mostly straightforward. More dialogue-heavy than some other games here, but a very solid point-and-click.

J.U.L.I.A. Among the Stars is really good especially if you like sci-fi - probably 6-8 hours of gameplay. The puzzles are fun and woven into the story/exploration really nicely.

I got this game for free* from IGN, the only game that I really enjoyed from them.
I friggen love this game. All hand drawn, fully voiced. Just a nice, light-hearted, kinda funny game.

The Blackwell series is great too. Each game is relatively short and the puzzles are mostly painless. It becomes one of my all-time favorite adventure series a few games in.

Couple things:

1)Tx guys, I already own the Blackwell package and am 2 games in, really liking it so far.

2) A golden Wake??? Is that really Wadjet published? Never heard of it, will definitely check it out now tx!!

3) Put J.U.L.I.A. on my wishlist now, looks right up my alley :)

Thanks for the article.

I was so glad to meet Charles Cecil in person two days ago (gamescom party by the biggest German Adventure board). He's really nice and bought me a beer. ;-)

Ron Gilbert also attended the party (he was in Cologne because of the Thimbleweed Park for Xbox One announcement). I can only say nice things about him, too. He said some interesting things about the game. It's always 5 PM and the graphic artist was very eager in adjusting the sun in every screen.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I didn't liked it at all.
I think it gets a free pass due to its nice artistic direction.

Oh god. I played it a few months ago and I don't remember anything at all about it. Does this happen to me only? There's quite a lot of adventures that I don't remember if I played and how they were.
I only remember that I quite liked it, but it's less good than Wadjet's adventures.

Heh, you're not the only one. That happens to me, too. :)

I don't recall many details of The Samaritan Paradox, other than the general setup and the story reveals near the end of the game, but like you I just remember really enjoying it.

im typically prone to forget a lot. And it has been a long time since iv played the samaritan paradox (since it released)... but i still remember quite a bit about it, in part because of its truly bizarre somewhat-regrettable choice of ending.... :P

Does anyone have reccomendations for good adventure games that play well on the iPhone? My experience with the genre is mostly older lucasarts games, but I'd be open to different styles.

Not exactly PnC, but Contradiction on iPad is a great murder mystery game. It's all FMV, but it's got a cool vibe to it. Gameplay is mostly interviewing suspects and looking for contradictions. There's also a bit of 'use this item in this spot', but it's pretty light.

Fun game, a steal at $ 5.00

I heard many good things about The Room 2.

Broken Sword 5 is worth a look, too.

I decided to pick up the remaster of the first Broken Sword since it is also on iphone. Looks interesting!

I watched GBEast play through the whole game already, it was great!

...I feel like I do owe the developer something for the entertainment but I don't know if I can justify buying it when I doubt I'll ever play it myself

Make a giveaway of the game over at th steam thread :P

Wow, can't believe I missed this thread

For the longest time, I could never get into adventure or PnC games

But Life Is Strange, Kentucky Route Zero, Gemini Rue, and playing Botanicula/Machinarium on iPad changed that

I'm so insanely hyped for Stasis this month. Already got the OT ready and everything. The alpha demo was fantastic.

Another great game, I think I actually beat this one. Jason Alexander's awesome.

Holy balls! There was a Duckman adventure game?

Nostalgia box overflowing, indeed...
