Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

C'mon, people. Stop posting anything in this thread that's a spoiler. Freaking unbelievable that this happens, especially when there's an active spoiler thread on the front page.

I haven't seen any spoilers in here so far.

Guess we define it differently. Either way, hope it's not true.

Played and loved every MGS since the PS1 game, so glad it's going to end on such a high.
A little disappointed with the rumoured lack of story but my excitement for the gameplay out ways that anyway.

GZ was my first MGS (other than the free MGS4 demo) and I hated every second of the cut scenes, especially the end one (but loved the gameplay). Were the MGS cut scenes better in the past?

You probably hated the cutscenes because you're missing 25 years worth of story.

Genuinely surprised that (so far) nobody's given this anything less than a 9/10. You'd think someone would have given it a seven or less, if only for the easy clicks. (Then again, Polygon's yet to score it, so they're probably going to do just that).

But yeah, pretty much universal acclaim from the western gaming press. Konami's going out with a bang.

Greg Miller is 54 hours and 49%

So, basically we're talking Witcher 3 levels of stuff.

Same, I'm skipping them entirely.

GameTrailers review says that due to strict Konami restrictions, they could only show previously released footage & very little gameplay. Nothing shown on video is a spoiler (unless you've been on media blackout). But what's said could be interpreted as spoiler, depending on how take certain information.

Hype!! Though story points are worrying me... I was actually very hyped for the "twists" to be revealed and etc. Does this mean the story is lacking or more spread out through the game or what?

So the french mag were right, sparse Story with everything on tapes, too much grind/farm etc... but great gameplay ? doesn't sound like 10 for me, 8.5/10 is more likely.

Yeah, because a story being spread across a 40+ hour game and a reviewer who may or may not have had to grind due to ineptitude automatically precludes the rest of the game from playing great, right?

"How's the gunplay, stealth, buddy system, weapon mods and various other extremely deep aspects of the game?"

"Not enough cutscenes and I avoided Mother Base because I don't know how Peace Walker worked. Gameplay = weak sauce."

I'm not even close to finishing the game but I've skimmed the IGN/GameSpot reviews and I'm starting to suspect that there might indeed be a hidden "true" ending that GameSpot saw but IGN didn't. (That'd help explain why GameSpot raves about the story while IGN says it's disappointing.) Just guessing, though. No spoilers here, but from what I've seen so far, some things MGSV are ostensibly optional but should probably be played or else it seems like you'll miss out on big things.

The plot thickens, perhaps in more ways than one.

I'm only starting to become interested in the game, which is nice because I've basically not seen anything outside the most basic outward facing imagery. All I really know is open world in the desert, quiet, a dog with an eye patch, and that's about it.

I just wonder if the story will be impenetrable to someone who has only played MGS1-3 and did so 10 years ago.

Greg Miller mentioned the main narrative involving Skullface wrapped up at one point (and credits rolled) but that there was many more threads to explore and complete

From Kotaku: "Quiet’s outfit has an actual explanation. Really! It’s, uh, strange, but it’s there!"

Just because it has an explanation doesn't mean it's a good one

the gamespot review mentions having to replay missions on a harder difficulty to unlock the final mission but at the bottom of the review it says

so if you do everything before moving on to the next main mission i bet you won't have to replay or grind anything. he only completed 40% of it.

Doing everything before moving on to the actual story missions sounds like a grind to me...

IGN? Miss something in a review?

Say it ain't so. But this is good to know.

So Konami didn't drop the ball here?

No crazy timers or freemium elements to the Mother Base stuff?

No reasons to wait on a first patch?

"Hidden David Hayter cutscene". I hear you loud and clear, brother.

The percentage means jack-shit, then, just like Ground Zeroes'.

I got 100% in GZ, it requires a ton of work and I don't intend to try with TPP.

You have to collect all XOF patches, all cassette tapes, complete all bonus objectives, unlock all trials (requires playing each mission a minimum of four times), and get an S rank on every mission on all difficulties.

Doing that over the hundred-something missions in TPP would be madness

Damn, this was my worry and it's confirmed. Disappointing :(

Oh no, woman wears revealing gear, stop the presses.

How dare Quiet dress this way.
Terrible game..

The point of GZ is it feels good to replay missions, and it does, you want to go back and collect soldiers or find this, find that etc.

From Kotaku: "Quiet’s outfit has an actual explanation. Really! It’s, uh, strange, but it’s there!"

Of course I won't say it here, but if what I read on the Spoiler Thread is true, then the "reason" is fucking ridiculous as per Kojima's usuals, and no one will feel shame over their words and deeds.

The explanation is very Metal Gear-ish. Take that as you will.

is it a bit like batman arkham knight?

where you don't even get the ending until you get all the riddler trophies.

Huh. The plot (literally) thickens.

I'm looking at the "spoiler" that people are freaking out about, and it's someone drawing a conclusion that a baseless fan theory might not be true because the reviews don't confirm it.

Calm the hell down.

I didn't like it. It's decent, about the best praise I could muster for it. If MGS1 and MGS3 are 10s, this is like an 8/10, which is obviously a huge disappointment. But one thing is for sure, I am glad Kojima is never making another MGS game. Just a decade of disappointment since the incredible MGS3. A weak "finale" that feels like an unnecessary entry. A little too long, a little too tedious at times, and poorly paced.

Kind of surprised with the very positive reviews, but then maybe I shouldn't be. Open world games are kind of the thing nowadays. I'm expecting it to be a love/hate kind of game.

Whatever happened to balance. Just go from one extreme to the other.

I still hate MGS4 more though.

RIP Metal Gear.

Maybe a "True Ending" endgame like Peace Walker? Hmmm....I hope not. I didn't like grinding to get that.

Hidden "true" endings are now my least favorite thing.

"Tackles taboo subjects with grace" is legitimately astounding after MGS4's B&B Corps. Solid, but forgettable boss fights followed by zoomed in shots of the chests and asses of female models while they moan until you shoot them and Drebin calls up with some "Dead babies, Snake. Super sad dead babies" shit. Lazy, misogynist, and intellectually-insulting from every angle.

Excited to actually play the game but this topic is a biohazard area now since people are apparently spoiling stuff.
People said the same thing about MGS4 so take that statement with a grain of salt.

RDR, GTA or Witcher 3 don't have sparse story or intensive farming. don't get me wrong, I'm fucking exited for this game, but I'm not that sure about the scores.
