Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Going to have to see how this microtransaction bollocks plays out before starting. Might keep my LE sealed and spin it if I have to pay a penny more than the £100 I've already fucking dropped to do the multiplayer. I'll also cancel my PES 16 pre-order if they manage to ruin this.

I'm fine with a grind, but if I do have to spend any money, I'm out and I'll just grab a code for the PC when it's cheap off some GTX owner.

Can't wait, the only thing killing my hype is the fact that I have played a load of open-world games in a row:

Shadow of Mordor
AC: Unity
Dragon Age Inquisition
Far Cry 4
GTAV
AC: Rogue
The Witcher 3
Arkham Knight

It's a big factor in why I enjoyed The Order so much. Was kinda hoping for a longer break before Fallout later this year. I'm sure I'll forget this concern once I get going though.

Amazing reviews! Kojima is leaving Konami with a bang, delivering a true masterpiece.

Argh, I can't wait for the game to come out!

It does have similarities to that, but it's much better. Peace Walker is a really crap game so not liking that doesn't mean you won't like this. This is much more polished, interesting, and it doesn't take an unnecessary dump on a dead character in an attempt to ruin things you might like. That's a pretty big headstart.

ty mr kojomo

Annoying people who keep shitting on peace walker should go away and not play what is essential peace walker 2 bye we don't want you here.
Lol. Sorry that many of us think it's a shite MGS game. Doesn't mean we can't be excited for a new one.

The tapes will likely have more useless trivia than MGS4's codec.

It kind of sounds like the codecs have just been passed to cassette tape format so only the cutscenes is what has been trimmed down.

Yeah maybe I should have rephrased that. I'm sure there's all kinds of useless nonsense in the tapes but the codecs just have that presentation I grew up with since MGS1. Hard to accept that they're gone. As for the story and cutscenes the trimming and vast reduction in frequency is really the biggest blow. That and having a nearly silent Snake. Hopefully it's better when experienced rather than imagined from reviews/impressions. Just get that classic Star Wars "I've got a bad feeling about this" vibe from everything regarding the story.

Weren't the PW tapes pretty much monologues, though? Which makes me think TPP tapes are also gonna be monologues. Exposition and whatever weren't the reason I loved codec calls, I loved the stupid and often humorous dialogue about anything not serious.

Exactly how I feel.

The game keeps getting 10/10 but upon reading all the reviews, all I am getting are vibes of Peace Walker and Portable Ops which were games I never even finished. Didn't like all that Fulton and Mother Base bullshit. Hated the lack of the grandiose cutscenes of the numbered MGS games (I can still re-play all the previous games and have tons of fun) and everyone points out how EVERYTHING i loved about the series is gone: its a weak story now, with no codec, no grandiose cutscenes, no David Hayter, silent snake, almost no boss fights and a shitload of open-world infiltration and customization that I honestly don't care about - that's NOT what a series represented for me since the masterpiece of the first game.

I just wanted MGS5 with the same type of gameplay and everything else from the previous game, same linearity, same amazing boss fights and cutscenes, same intriguing codec conversations and now its all gone.

FUCK this :(
It has been clear from the start that that was the direction they where going in.

Congrats are definitely in order for Hideo Kojima and his team for earning such critical acclaim once again. It appears that his role in Metal Gear will be ending on the highest of notes, and that's great for him.

That said, despite the superlative reviews, I'm sitting this one out. Open-world games and I never mix, and I've wasted far too much money on other critically-acclaimed open-world games just to wind up getting bored with them after a few hours and inevitably trading them away within a week. (GTA games, Oblivion, Skyrim, Saints Row games, Fallout, etc)

I have, in my own mind, a preferred formula for games. I prefer strongly scripted, more linear experiences that keep me focused and moving forward. There can be some room for exploration, but if there's no driving force to keep me playing... I get bored with side activities, lose interest in the main storyline, and just stop playing. I get that my preferred formula for gaming is gradually being replaced by the open-world/sandbox model, but I'm not personally a fan of this direction.

That said, creators have their own vision when it comes to game development... and I don't have to like it or buy it to respect it. If this is Kojima's vision, good on him for seeing it through. Sure, I'm disappointed that there's a mainline MGS game that I won't buy/play, but life goes on. It's obvious that reviewers love it, and I'm sure it'll be a hit. I'll stick with the more linear games and enjoy those.

Gotta love MGS1 Mei Ling's quotes of wisdom and then in MGS2 Otacon tries to do the same in place of Mei Ling (Since you call him to save your game) and fails miserably.

You say that like it's a bad thing. The constant interruptions in gameplay brought me out of the experience.

It doesn't make any sense for a guy that is in the middle of a sneaking mission to just kneel down and start talking to himself.

Can't you just play the story missions and skip side missions?

Haha. That's part of the magic. The sheer fact that we'll never get one of those insane codec calls about the elevator weight warning going off with Otacon's face filling the codec screen yelling "L Look out Snake, the guys that stole my stealth prototypes are in there with you!" makes me incredibly sad.

*salute*

Why am I still reading this thread? Just to suffer? Every refresh, I see MGS 4, MGS 3, even Peace Walker being insulted. It won't stop hurting.

Hurt me more!

Snake had a lonely life. Sometimes he just needs to talk.

Look at Big Boss. Dude's always about to cry or something. We all know how it turned out for him. Maybe if he talked, it wouldn't have been so bad.

Just because it is an open world format doesn't mean it is anything like GTA or Skyrim. Seems to me that it is very much mission-based where you drop in and out except you are doing it in a open environment unlike before where it is from point A to point B.

You are basically passing it off based on the words "open world" without having even looked over it thoroughly.

Once and for all, the main problem with OW wasnt the mission structure and mother base, which is like the only thing in common with TPP.

I played Ground Zeroes and hated it the new style of mission design and the sandbox layout. That pretty much made up my mind right then and there. It's far too open and directionless for my liking.

The lack of cut scenes is music to my ears. Kojima can't make movies for shit.

I'd prefer codec to bioshock style contrived as fuck tapes though.

I think that's the healthiest way to look at it. I have to somehow get over my disappointment and at least give it a few hours to see for myself whether its worthwhile to play it for me personally.

Yeah that's fair, I personally like the codec way too since they are conversations. Monologues are not as interesting. Most I can hope for in the cassette tapes is that there are conversations within those cassette tapes.

As for a silent Snake... yeap that is a real shame. All we can hope for is that despite the no codecs, silent Snake, and less cutscenes, the game is still a great addition to the MGS franchise.

I'm not a huge Metal Gear fan. I loved MGS for the simple (as in with clarity) stealth and the story was fun. MGS 2 was fun but already getting a bit silly on the la le lu le lo stuff, but the spectacle and production values were so high it was a great sequel.

mgs3 onwards lost me. Too freeform, never knowing why an enemy found me. mgs3 just felt like the end hill music was playing over and over in my head as I ran away from everyone (hence why I preferred the simpler vision cones of MGS1 I guess)

So I'd basically out MGSV out of my head. One less expensive game to worry about this year already have too many to play. But those reviews - especially the IGN and Gamespot ones - are really inviting. A little less of the crazy story (although I'm sure it will assume some knowledge of MGS lore), and basically a sandbox to go all metal gear in sounds really fascinating.

Not going to jump in right away, but will keep an eye on the OT to see how people are enjoying it.
