Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Yeah, but you shoud've have known. This is a Metal Gear game.

Weren't the PW tapes pretty much monologues, though? Which makes me think TPP tapes are also gonna be monologues. Exposition and whatever weren't the reason I loved codec calls, I loved the stupid and often humorous dialogue about anything not serious.

PW tapes had plenty of conversations and humour.

I think that's the healthiest way to look at it. I have to somehow get over my disappointment and at least give it a few hours to see for myself whether its worthwhile to play it for me personally.

At some point, after it's $20 or less, I might give the game a try. It *is* MGS, after all, and I feel like I should at least try it eventually. My dislike for the game's direction is what it is. I understand that not every game will be made with my preferences in mind; in fact, I accept that fewer and fewer of those kinds of games are being made.

It's great that the game is getting such high marks. My disappointment is just what it is. I'm not angry about it. I'm not going to chuck my older MGS games out the window in disgust because Kojima didn't make the game I wanted. It's just weird that, after four previous installments-- each of which I bought on their respective launch days-- it's impossible for me to rationalize spending $60 on MGSV because Ground Zeroes set the tone and basically warned me that I won't like the final product.

well, just bought the steelbook edition on amazon. i dont even know why i waited so long.
i almost watched no gameplay, gonna be so good. will be back after i finish it. :p

People slagging off Peace Walker and comparing The Phantom Pain to Peace Walker 2.0
Once you play the game, you will feel ashamed of your words & deeds.

I played Ground Zeroes and hated it the new style of mission design and the sandbox layout. That pretty much made up my mind right then and there. It's far too open and directionless for my liking.

ehhh...how else would Kojima take the series forward in terms of gameplay?

Loved mgs4 but it was essentially sneaking around very contained maps with very specific pathways. I'd rather have the AI roam around rather than walk back and forth 20 feet for the whole mission.

AI in this game have their own habits, they roam around and aren't stuck in the same position waiting for you to tranquilize them

It isn't directionless. It doesn't just drop you in the middle of nowhere. You have an objective/target and you go in and out of the mission. It is how you tackle the objective. I find that way more fun than just being dropped in a corridor, solving the initial area then moving on to the next. I've already played that game numerous times in other MGS games. That is why I haven't even finished Peacewalker yet because of how repetitive the missions can get. After a while, the level design becomes inconsequential, the AI becomes predictable and the challenge is easily overcome with better weapons.

Look at Big Boss. Dude's always about to cry or something. We all know how it turned out for him. Maybe if he talked, it wouldn't have been so bad.

Not surprised at these scores at all. From the moment I played GZ it was obvious this was gonna be a masterpiece. The gameplay-mechanics and level-design are just so much better than most AAA games it's almost laughable. Congrats to Kojima and his team. Can't wait to finally get my hands on this, I even got a few days off for this.

Bursting with an astounding array of content, amazingly deep gameplay and an engrossing story, The Phantom Pain is the best Metal Gear game to date. It’s a masterpiece, oozing with Kojima’s creative genius. He’s listened and learned, crafting a game that’s as close to perfection as you can get. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and, as the credits roll, you’ll sit there in disbelief. I certainly did. Either way, you’ll agree that The Phantom Pain is one very special game. If this is to be Kojima’s last Metal Gear game, what a way to sign off. It’s so damn good. No exaggeration, one of the best games ever made.

PC Games (Germany) Review - 88%

"A worthy entry to the Metal Gear franchise that is refreshingly different"

My opinion: I like this direction. I just started playing MGS (finished 2 yesterday) and while the story and characters are great (and batshit insane) and the small confined areas are okay, the length and number of cutscenes can be annoying sometimes. I started playing the series because the gameplay of Ground Zeroes (played it on PS Plus) was so much fun that I wanted to rediscover the series. I'm looking forward to playing MGS5 in the end because I already know that the gameplay will be tons of fun. And the german reviews mention that Phantom Pain is a great sandbox. Exactly what I want. A modern Deus Ex/Thief that rewards your thinking and planning.

Someone says at one point that around 3 min in (I'm paraphrasing here) that if you want to remain spoiler free you should "get the fuck out."

So that answers that.

The way he said it just put me off though lol

Not watching then, thanks for the warning :)

Is the GT review REALLY spoilery ? Story dpoilers ? I want to see it so bad...

None of the footage is new and they're vague about the story. The most specific topic they address is the number of areas in the game.

Unless I missed anything else while watching the review, I don't think there were any spoilers.

I tweeted this message to Mr. kojima

"it is unacceptable to be forced to replay the main missions for no reason, is something that can be corrected with a patch?
please answer is a unanimous criticism from reviewers and fans
is a choice imposed by Konami?"

FUCK this :(

ok, my two cents on this.

i had my own problems with PW and portable ops. i own them both on multiple platforms but have not finished one of them myself. despite several tries, i just couldnt get through them. the mission structure and the base-planning elements were just not for me at the time, so i can fully understand your point of view regarding that. although i think motherbase will certainly not be my main focus in the new game, i'm a lot more open to the whole concept this time around.

"EVERYTHING i loved about the series is gone: its a weak story now, with no codec, no grandiose cutscenes, no David Hayter, silent snake, almost no boss fights"

how the hell do you come to this conclusion??... i mean, is MGSV different than the other games in the series? yeah,sure... that was obvious for the last couple of years.

yeah, the codec is gone and you can like that or not. i think it worked really well in GZ. despite loving the conversations in older MGSs, they sometimes could be a little much in number, especially in MGS2. no doubt there still will be conversation...and yes, a lot of tapes obviously.

no david hayter(as big boss), silent snake.... sure, cant argue with that. but kojima made it clear, why he made these changes. found my peace with it.

but how can you honestly state, that the game has a weak story and no cutscenes?... i mean, i have not played the game (you neither) , but to think kojima would end his last MGS without filling it up with story is mindblowing to me.
and weren't all the trailers basically edited cutscenes? soo... if they are an indication, what to expect cutscene-wise... i'm not worried.

so, maybe the game is just not for you and thats totally fine. if you wanted a game that felt exactly like 3 or 4...well, this game is not. but saying all these things one week before release and before ever laying hands on the game yourself seems wrong to me.

i have honestly never seen so much complaining in a review thread, where the game gets only 9s and 10s :D
