Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Sn4ke, the 'true' ending or whatever it is calle is under NDA, the destructoid reviewer posted here that he can't talk about details.

If this is true I need to go on a massive media blackout. An asshole Kotaku commenter spoiled me the big reveal in MGS4's epilogue
Big Boss is alive!!!
before the game came out. I can only imagine the megaton reveals in the true ending of Kojima's last MGS ever.

Shit. I hate the internet sometimes. It's gonna be a long week.

One of the few open world games to come out with exceptional gameplay and people are weary?? How did they ever survive AC, Gta, Witcher and Batman.

Can we not have any of this final boss fight NDA discussion stuff here thanks. I feel spoilt already at the
snake vs snake
speculation.

Reviews wouldn't be talking about a disappointing or lacking story if that happened.

Well, the reviewer also said that the true ending is missable and giving that a lot of those reviewers had to made pretty quick review, I could see those who critisize the 'sparse' story didn't see that ending nor grinded and listened to the tapes.

Just a theory.

Indirectly it is, I wish I hadn't read that... -_-

edit: if that's true and not just speculation that is.

I am expecting to love this one, but for different reasons than what made me a fan. The gameplay, exploration and sheer amount of options will be great. But that "rollercoaster ride" feeling of MGS1-3 (and 4 to lesser extent) with iconic moments and encounters/bossfights around every corner is gone I fear. But I can't say that the premise of what we do get here sounds bad. Just hope it is a little bit less management heavy as PW (which was great by all means, but clearly made for shorter bursts and handheld gaming).

I also was worried about the lack of story and focus, so I browsed a bit trough the spoiler thread and it got me interested. Cannot really make much sense of what I read and thankfully do not feel spoiled (not more than many trailers did to me in the past, at least). Now I won't click on it anymore and just watch old MGS stuff to keep me entertained.

It is probably the last Metal Gear Solid game.

Might be that Konami will give the franchise to a Western studio as they did with Silent Hill. Homecoming. But who knows? It seems that they are not interested in AAA-games anymore.

But I'm sure Hideo Kojima will keep on making games.

Konami will rape the shit out of MGS. It is the last Kojima MGS game. Not the last MGS game.

Dark times lay ahead...

I thought it had already leaked that the true ending is 23 minutes of Kojima and Del Toro making out.

Thankfully, we will always have the Kojima games which offer enough material to be considered the canonical line. Even if Konami ruins everything, it can be easily ignored as it is all from other writers anyways. Also, I am hoping they go for a reboot series or some distant spin-offs (Ocelot, the Boss?). Or just go with MGR and let that be it's own series (maybe Kojima is willing to help Platinum with some story bits still).

I'm not a huge Metal Gear fan. I loved MGS for the simple (as in with clarity) stealth and the story was fun. MGS 2 was fun but already getting a bit silly on the la le lu le lo stuff, but the spectacle and production values were so high it was a great sequel.

mgs3 onwards lost me. Too freeform, never knowing why an enemy found me. mgs3 just felt like the end hill music was playing over and over in my head as I ran away from everyone (hence why I preferred the simpler vision cones of MGS1 I guess)

So I'd basically out MGSV out of my head. One less expensive game to worry about this year already have too many to play. But those reviews - especially the IGN and Gamespot ones - are really inviting. A little less of the crazy story (although I'm sure it will assume some knowledge of MGS lore), and basically a sandbox to go all metal gear in sounds really fascinating.

Not going to jump in right away, but will keep an eye on the OT to see how people are enjoying it.

Try Ground Zeroes?

Super cheap and it's like an appetiser for the full Phantom Pain release. Just take that (phenomenal, smooth, focused) gameplay and imagine it in a far larger world with loads of strategic options.

I really hope that if Konami decides to continue with the series, people like Sutherland won't continue working with them.

I would actually like to see a game about yhe Cobra Unit in WW2 where it would help if it's not a Metal Gear game. I could see something like Xcom: EU or Dragon Age where you control the whole unit utilizing all abilities to get the victory.

Most reviewers haven't got the 'real' ending

Well, the reviewer also said that the true ending is missable and giving that a lot of those reviewers had to made pretty quick review, I could see those who critisize the 'sparse' story didn't see that ending nor grinded and listened to the tapes.

It seems some reviewers got the true ending and some haven't, Jason Schreier said it sounds pretty satisfying.

Yeah, sounds absurd to me that a competent ending can be missed in an entry with less story presented throughout the game. Hopefully someone will spill or at least hint at what needs to be done to achieve it before release. Definitely not something I want to miss.

That garbage Polygon write up.

Also why do I feel like that Twitter post is a spoiler itself when posted?

Keep that shit out of here.

Amazing review scores.

Really looking forward to experiencing Kojima's final work.

The only thing I'm worried about like others have said is the story. Seems way scaled back.

Also what's this new trend of secret endings? I don't have enough time to game and max everything out or play on a super hard difficulty :(

Just looked at the scores only and HOLY SMOKES. Sooo pumped. Staying away from all media coverage with this game as of late is BRUTAL man. One week left though!

What the fuck is this shit, having to replay boss battles on Hard and having to do certain things to get a "true" ending?

This has just killed the hype I had for the game and I'm considering cancelling my pre order.

This may seem like an over-reaction but I'm not the kind of person who replays games just open new content, I'm not the kind of person who wants to 100% a game and I don't play on hard difficulties. I usually pick easy mode so I can experience the game and story how I want to experience it.

There is literally no way in which you can justify having to replay missions on high difficulties just to see the whole game.

I get that there should be rewards for people that want to play hard mode but not the fucking proper ending to the game.

Can someone link me to the review that said you have to replay bosses on hard? I read a bunch but none of them mentioned anything like that.

Debate will rage over whether it’s the best, but The Phantom Pain is very arguably the ultimate Metal Gear, grabbing the best ideas, themes and mechanics from every game in the series, then forging them into one coherent whole. It’s set in a believable open world of complex, interlocking systems, yet it still has tension, drama, plenty of Kojima weirdness and some serious cinematic power. The Phantom Pain might be hard on body and soul at times, but you really don’t want to miss it.
9/10 from TrustedReviews

in the multiplayer.it review they say that listening to the cassette tapes it's not only helpful to understand the lore, but it's fundamental to gain access to the ending of the game. They're saying this hinting that it's one of the requirements to unlock the true ending

My plan - watch the "true ending" on YouTube.

If I'm paying £60 I want the full game, I could not buy it at all and just watch a Let's Play if I wanted to watch the true ending on youtube.

None of the other numbered games locked the full ending behind a fucking difficulty level.

i'm definitely going to just watch the "true" ending on youtube. i don't want to have to do busy work for the sake of narrative closure. kojima can fuck right off with that.

It's a thing, some people will love it, some people will hate it. It's not exactly new - a bunch of recent games (and prior MGS titles) have done it.

A 10/10 from Eurogamer would be amusing after their '8/10, don't come back Snake' MGS4 review.

Same guy already gave Peace Walker a 8/10 too and acknowledged that it doesn't matter what he says because Kojima was clearly going to keep making the games and they're still good.

I thought this myself! Although more of a traditional MGS game.

Imagine a pre-prequel. A pre-MGS3 prequel.

Imagine an MGS game where we play The Boss in WWII.

Female protagonist. Various WWII fronts and battle theatres (French front line, African theatre, Eastern European behind-enemy-lines, Pacific theatre). Old-school technology, original RADAR, etc. The origins and drama behind the COBRA unit - her affair with The Sorrow, Ocelot's origins, etc...

The potential is pretty crazy.

I didn't have an opinion on this game design concept until Arkham Knight did it. In Arkham Knight, you have to 100% all the side-missions as well as main missions to unlock the 'true' ending.

To be honest, it made the game better, in my opinion. It made you really engage with all the content and take everything in before it all wrapped up.

And if TPP's mission design is half as good as AK's (will probably be twice as good) then 100%ing the game should be a very fun long-term endeavour.

is there any word on how much of an annoying asshat kaz miller is in this one? he really got on my tits in ground zeros. dude wouldn't shut up.
