Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

To clarify, my post was aimed at people who were accidentally spoiled and now for whatever reason are using that as their sole reason for no longer wanting to play the game. Like, what does it matter if Big Boss is actually an alien from Jupiter (not an actual spoiler, I hope :P) in the grand scheme of what this game features. If people are uninterested because the twist is "stupid" or whatever, I have to wonder what rock they have been living under considering that has literally been a hallmark of this series since the beginning. The first game had you fighting the guy who gave you the orders as the final boss. Come on.

I'm trying to keep away from this thread to avoid spoilers, but it looks so good so far.

I'm gonna need a briefing on what everyone is annoyed about, though. Spoiler-free, please, if you don't mind. Ishida or anyone else that is keeping up with this thread: what's all the hubub about?

Less cutscenes more gameplay, pretty much what I've gathered.

Sound like a home-run! I'm okay with there only being
two locations to explore.
. The diversity on how you can approach each mission more than makes up for that. Plus it's Metal Gear Frickin' Solid!

I've only played Ground Zeroes and watched a YouTube play of Peace Walker. What's the best way for one to familiarize himself with MG Solid's lore? I'd prefer not to spend hours watching playthroughs of the previous installments and I'm not able to play the HD collection.

I for one am excited about the idea of more being Big Boss and less watching Big Boss.

I enjoy the ridiculousness of MGS stories as much as the next person, but they've all had tooany cut scenes, bottom line. And seeing as how Ground Zeros played so damn well, I'm excited to not have 30 minute poorly-edited dialogue scenes interrupt the gameplay every ten minutes.

People are upset about that?

People are upset about two things in particular that were already confirmed before, and we are treating it like spoilers still for some reason.

Also people are disappointed that reviewers weren't ashamed about their words and deeds.

Oh, and cassette vs codec debates.

There is another
"mission structure"
spoiler going around that is quite ridiculous that people are getting upset about and mods have even confirmed it isn't a spoiler

As it's the final Metal Gear, I think it would've been nice if we could've included ourselves (maybe even our online character) in to SP Motherbase army. Maybe it'd have been a little immersion breaking.

Hmm. I loved MGS4, but I bailed on Ground Zeroes after about an hour when it was a PS+ freebie. So I was going to pass on this for the time being, but now my interest is piqued again. Decisions, decisions.

My body... Is ready.

This might help you if you are on the fence.
It is honestly best you watch it yourself, as his way of explaining it is really in-depth and discusses lots of particular points that click, but in general:

1. Greg felt that GZ was a shoebox. He says TPP gets rid of this completely. Each segment for infiltration is a "concept". You are given a scenario with many "real" points of entry with many valid ways to approach it. This MG does a great job of making the concepts of GZ something totally different in this way. He goes more in-depth on this in the video.

2. The game felt like it "was with you" no matter the decisions you make. No longer is the game like GZ in this regard, according to him. Stealth is still recc. for that easier S rank, but with the addition of 'bonus conditions' you can still get that S in lethal mode. This stops the game from being repetitive. No longer will you feel like you have to get that tranq the whole way through in order to "win". Lethal options are very valid means of winning the mission, and using lethal weapons and paths are some times necessary in order to do a mission without getting frustrated. And once again, the game doesn't make you feel guilty or that you lost by choosing a lethal way, though it does not give you as many points as possible.

3. There are mechanics in the game that you can potentially get to in 20-25 hours of playing the game. All these new mechanics are steadily introduced in the game and will keep you entertained.

4. Besides playing missions over for the "s" rank, which you might be doing later on in the game, there are still well over 100 side ops that are all their own thing.

5. Re-iterated that weapon customization really makes the game a lot more fun.

6. Though there is two large maps, don't worry. There are still variety in that open world including some pretty interesting infrastructures.
etc.

I really liked his points. It takes watching the whole video to just understand where he is coming from.
It's less mgs and more like ubi/ac/far cry.

And it's not just less cut scenes.
It focuses way less on story overall.

And yes, there are people out their that liked mgs pre peace walker and are kinda disappointed.

We've had multiple reviewers come in this very thread and say that claim is far off base, and all of them have played the other titles. This includes Metal Gear hardcore fans who were there since day 1 saying the story is in-depth and enjoyable.

Stop panic attacking, ffs.

Is talking about Metal Fear Frikin' Solid but only played Ground Zeroes.

Lol?

How so?

I like them both. Probably MGS4 a little more due to the variety of environments and gameplay mechanics, but almost at the same level.

MGS2 switches main character. MGS4 plays it safe by keeping it with Old Snake. MGS2 is open ended. MGS4 is conclusive. MGS2 has Ocelot being a very bad guy. MGS4 has Ocelot being a tragic anti-hero. MGS2 feels very cold. MGS4 tries to make you emotional. MGS2 trolls the player. MGS4 gives fanservice in spades. etc. etc.

They're just opposites in a lot of ways.

Spoiler! I thought it was already confirmed that Chico was Quiet??

Jesus Christ I swear if that is actually a spoiler I'm going to be pissed. You didn't even use tags or anything, I tagged it in case it is. Can someone who has been through the spoilers tell me if it is?

That he is great but Big Boss himself is mostly a silent protagonist.

By the way, anyone knows if most reviews actually got the
the real ending or not?

Sounds like a lot did, and there are reviewers/fans at the event who got to the true end without replaying missions.
-Spoiler-free-
Again, there is a known method of getting to it, and it honestly is not that hard to get to.

Just putting that out there for the people who are worried and won't pick up the game otherwise.

Ahahahaha it's a joke.

Knowing that would really spoil you, so just play the game and find out for yourself.

Even if there is still a lot of story in the game, if it is hidden in tapes you have to look for and collect, I call that less focused on story.

So Konami clarified the statement, saying the initial "command FOB" is earned in game but that other fobs/ are through MB coins? I dunno.

Nope.

You get your first FOB in-game.

You "buy" other FOBs with MB coins in waters "across the world" (just different 'instances' of bases you can make, lol.)

You get more MB coins by doing missions in-game.

You can buy MB cons to expedite the process.

You might be need to use MB coins to upgrade your FOBs.

Even if there is still a lot of story in the game, if it is hidden in tapes you have to look for and collect, I call that less focused on story.

The in-game story has been confirmed to be sufficient and intriguing.

If you mean "it won't be a linear story-telling", sure. But there are 50 missions which cover lots of story, and I'm not sure you could think otherwise, even the cut scenes in the trailers show this will cover a lot of ground.

You get tapes for completing missions. I don't doubt there will be ones that you have to procure on site but not all of them are "hidden".

The codec vs cassette tape "discussion" is so stupid. For all intents and purposes, they are the same thing, except for the fact that with cassette tapes, you don't have to be frantically calling every single contact over and over again whenever you make the slightest amount of progress or risk missing great dialogue for the rest of the playthrough. HOW IS THIS CHANGE A BAD THING? I LITERALLY CANNOT UNDERSTAND.

So... If they are opposites I can't enjoy both of them? Each of them offered me something different, something I enjoyed. I guess I'm a more versatile gamer. :)

But there's no portraits to look at while they talk! /s

I just often see MGS2 fans and MGS4 fans butt heads the most when it comes to the fanbase. That's all. MGS2 fans (those who place it the highest) tend not to like the "answers" MGS4 revealed.

Same here, and this is from someone who loves the Codec convos.

I prefer codecs because even if it's just a character giving an info dump, they are giving it to Snake and it allows Snake to question things that we also question and then have the characters naturally expand on concepts and ideas they are explaining. With the tapes it's someone recording them for whatever reason. Some of the tapes in GZ made sense because it was like they wanted to record horrible shit happening and make Chico listen to them as a way to break him and in PW you had Paz with her diary.

They could both deliver the exact same information and be equally as missable but I think a codec call is better because even if it's a character just dumping information it feels more like a dialouge. I can see why they cut down codecs though and used tapes instead, less talking for Kiefer and you can have other characters talk and get the information to the player without having to have Kiefer comment or question.

I don't think people think it's bad but rather a downgrade. Option is good, I like options and codecs made multiple playthroughs that much more enjoyable apart from the other things. To this day people still find stuff within the codecs in MGS games and that shit blows my mind.

Yeah, I see. But screw them. ;)

LOL, I never knew that loving 4 means impossible to love the others as well. I love all 4 MGS games to death. Technically, my favorite one is 3 but for personal reasons(It was a cathartic experience for me after following and loving thw series since 1998-1999), 4 is my favorite.

The tapes in Peace Walker did just that? They were very much dialogues where Big Boss had a lot of things to say.

What? Snake talks in the audio tapes in GZ too, as he will here. Several people who have played the game said Kiefer has most of his lines in the tapes.

And you have the option to choose which tapes to listen to and which not to as well? Not to mention finding hidden tapes in the game world on subsequent play throughs. There is nothing to suggest that people won't be finding cool stuff in the tapes later on down the line at all.
