I don't wanna get too ahead of myself after only playing 8 or so hours, but I'm pretty sure Hideo and his team created one of the best games of all time here.

I hope we someday get a behind the scenes breakdown of how the whole process worked with Kief

at this point I really am sure that some sort of schedule got fucked up, he was too expensive, priorities changed, or something

cutscenes get kinda ridiculous. camera goes straight to his face like he's about to talk and he says absolutely nothing, yet whenever he's not on-screen he'll talk just fine

After playing 30+ hours I'd say it's the 2nd or 3rd best MGS game. Somewhere with Snake Eater and the masterful MGS1.

There's signs of bigger issues than that. They managed to make a great game but you can tell development was hell. For all we know Konami and Kojima were at odds for years during the making.

That is not the story of the game.

The game has a plot that's actually quite engaging, and one you should experience.

OK cool. I love MGS, and I just stumbled upon it. I'm still going to play it, I was just worried that was...you know it.

So in the grand scheme of things, not that awful?

How do I get Quiet to be my buddy?

I beat her in the sniper battle, took her to mother base and now she is in medical.

Also (major WTF) Paz related.

The Fuck!? Paz is still alive? This has to be a hallucinations right?

Edit: Ah I see what you mean, not exactly a spoiler as she was in the trailer lol.

face the music fox, it was like a 2 second flash and especially in a kojima series nobody knows what the trailers really mean. glad it's probably a minor spoiler guessing by context but still, you shouldn't have said it without tagging

I try not to do the whole East vs West thing but yeah, pretty much. The issue is that a lot of Western developers lean heavily on "immersion" production wherein a significant resources from the tech, animation, and art departments are put into having the player avatar react and move "realistically" within the game world. Which has its place and is fine, but almost always results in a kinda goofy, sluggish responsiveness to analogue stick and/or key input. There's an unfortunate and natural dissonance between bridging the real limitations of a control pad/keyboard/mouse and presenting your game systems with believable, "natural" motion.

Sometimes it just pays to go "fuck it", reduce your emphasise on naturalistic movement and weight, and go for something that is tighter and more responsive. MGSV still animates well, even if most of the movements and play feel are quite unrealistic and snappy. But it's not like it's at a cost of immersion. If anything, my avatar feeling responsive and tight to control aids my immersion even if visually it's lesser.
Definitely, which is probably why I'm enjoying it so much.

Honestly the way Snake runs is really, really well animated. Literally the best running in a video game I have seen. And you're right, it's not sluggish, and it controls on point. The animations are just so damn good. Like, when you're prone and aiming a gun, in previous MGS(Sans 4), it was like a radial circle that he turned, but here he just naturally moves from his belly to flipping on his back and it looks so damn good. And it controls as such that it's intuitive and natural.

It was said time & again that the lines & overall plan of Big Boss' dialogue was planned before hiring Keifer. They wanted him to be more of a silent protagonist, one where you see emotion in his face/action as opposed to talking. A silent listener & more action based.

I think the issue is the lip-syncing thing.

Robin A. Downes was being called back to record new lines quite frequently. So it seems like the script wasn't nailed down before recording began.

So, whilst recordings for cassettes tapes can be done with relative convenience, recording Kiefer and motion capturing his face for cutscenes would probably be more of an effort (specific locations, technology, etc)

My impressions from about 5 hours of play:

+ Top notch stealth mechanics... much better than I ever thought I'd see in a MGS game. Feels like Splinter Cell.
+ Open levels let you tackle missions however you see fit. Perfect along with the stealth mechanics.
+ Excellent technical achievement in graphics, performance, animations (except D-Horse can be really rough), and voice acting
+ Lots of uninterrupted gameplay (great for the non-MGS fan)

- Open world is extremely bland when not in a mission
- Doesn't seem to have the mission variety you'd hope for in an open world game, but I also haven't played much
- Not sure how much time I'll really want to dedicate to Mother Base activities
- Story is..... oddly told.

Overall an excellent game, I'd have it somewhere in the 9/10 range.

I may be wrong but at that time you don't have the equipment for it. Maybe if you replay it later you can.

Well,
they tell you to use the honey bee. Which I did, and it did like half damage to them? I think? or I just used it on a big group and then something happened? I honestly don't know what I did. I was noping the fuck out as hard as I could.

Is there a way to turn off the "Featuring" stuff in the intro to a mission? I feel like there's very little reason for that to be there. It basically ruins the surprise of who might be in an upcoming mission. Very strange choice.

Not that awful.

How many main missions are there? Just curious.

Around
--32
to see the credits. There are more after that. There's about
--45
in total to see everything that's pertinent to the story,
some of which are optional, and most of the 13 additional missions are repeats of previous missions at a higher difficulty
.

The animation and camera business when getting on the horse is pointless. As is the little drum that sounds when you do.

Loving the game, but finding that to be pretty annoying.

Keep playing story missions & she will join you.

I've almost beaten the game, but it hasn't been explained yet. Perhaps the GZ ending we got wasn't what truly happened?

Might want to give that second tag some context so no one reads it by accident...

I dont know. I can believe that but at the same time the game doesnt seem tailored towards that. It's a weird change and it feels like something's up rather than it being natural.

I don't feel like it adds anything or changes anything about his character if they were going for that. He doesnt really have expressions either, it doesnt feel like an expressive silent protagonist but more like a work in progress were they forgot to add the lines. even the camera thinks so.

its odd

sure

but mgsv takes it to the polar opposite extreme, which is also shitty

MGS3 had it right :)
Nah.

I love how sparse the cutscenes are, considering how shit Kojima is at pacing them. Also isn't having the focus on the gameplay what everyone has been asking for?

I agree with some that the opening could have used some editing. Some parts were just tiring to go through a second time.

Anyone else been having issues creating a new emblem on PC?

When I go to the 'words' section, I get huuuge input lag/slowdown.

As soon as I back out of that section into the main 'emblem create' menu, it's fine again.

On another note, how on earth do I: (1st mission spoiler)

Sneak past the Skulls in their first encounter?

I believe if you
Wait a while, the Skulls on the bridge move down to the right side of the canyon/valley, which lets you sneak by. Not sure if there's another way.

The instant-alert guards all auto-homing in on you if you get spotted once is still bullshit, lol.

edit: Oh yeah, when can you start changing the ponytail into the mullet, or other hairstyles?

I know I am late but I finally played it after work and got through the prologue which was great and tried to play the next mission and had to cut it off since I felt so tired. Is it me or does the game seem overwhelming at first, just drop you in and just go lol. I'll have to give it more time when I get the chance maybe this weekend.

Yo so in Mission 6
do you actually have to beat the skulls? I just ran the fuck away, because I don't want to be anywhere near those guys.

I just did this very mission! You actually
have to use the Honey Bee, you have to make it home onto the Skulls so you have to keep the reticle on them -- it takes about two shots from it to kill them. You use all the ammo up to kill each Skull.

I've played about 20 hours(15 on PC, 5 on PS4) of this game across two platforms and all I can say is I think this is the best MGS since MGS3.

I'm legit shocked at how good it is, and the facial mocap is amazing.

I've got most of my motherbase facilities built out now and wow it's a pretty big place, so far I can't figure out where all the targets are for the damn target range sideops.

Fears assuaged, thank you!

Sneak past the Skulls in their first encounter?

Guys, please. Put context for your tags.

I ran under the bridge and used the arm knock mechanic to lure and ran back/rode over the bridge while they were investigating.

Perhaps it's because I've played a lot of this today, but missions are kind of repetitive. Not much map variety, and the objective is always basically find thing/person/prisoner and bring back thing/person/prisoner.

I just got "Bionic Arm (GLD)" in development

its a golden bionic arm

is that the GZ save thing? didnt know I had to buy it. pretty expensive too

That's really interesting.
I wonder if it will affect my game that I (maybe? supposedly?) didn't kill them then.

I'm confused about repeating missions.

Spoiler for Mission 3

I killed the commander with my sniper the first time (fucking cool). If I repeat the mission will I be able to extract him? Will he be on my mother base for the rest of the game?

I think so.

This is prolly old news by now, but you can totally make a SONS OF LIBERTY emblem. Awesome.

I am ok with that considering the mechanics are good. You have lots of tools and approaches. Dunno if I will ever replay all these side ops, but for the first experience they are absolutely golden.

damn at mission 6 took me three hours lol.... was awesome though... its gettin real.....
its a shame time is soo vauled though i reall like taking my time...

I just fired 17 people

fuck those E E E E E E E bastards

lost some base levels but whatever

I feel like im recruiting cool soldiers but all that shows up is waste?

How do I detonate my C4 on PC?

You planted it on your PC? Well I don't recommend you detonate it, but if you do make sure you're a safe distance away from the explosion. Otherwise...

I played ten hours straight of this game today and hnnnnnngh it's SO GOOOOOOD. I'd write more right now but I'm going to be heading to bed soon. I think I might write something tomorrow, we'll see.

Just soooo fun and the options at hand are so nice even if you're just starting out.

Mission 16 has to be the most terrible mission in recent gaming history. I can't even trigger the scene to end it. If the game decides to drive away, i'm fucked.

Played about 4 hours so far and it's incredibly fun. Definitely seems like I need to spend a few more hours just fultoning everyone in sight though to get my R&D team up.

I need more toys to play with, since so far I'm pretty much just using the Tranq. Pistol on everyone and sneaking.
