Holy shit. Just made it into Afghanistan and went through the first few outposts.

That prologue is something else. Loving everything so far!

just curious, does anyone know exactly how side ops unlock? It seems almost at random for me. I am just replaying missions and they are unlocking when I come back

Do I need to manually equip the weapons that say "equippable by security team staff" for each staff member? If so how do I do it?

I don't think you manually do it.

You select parameters like 'Lethal/Non-Lethal' and the range at which they engage enemies and I think the game automatically assigns them weapons (from the weapons that you have developed) according to those parameters and the amount you've spent on defence. So choosing something like 'Non-lethal, close range' would have them using rubber bullet shotguns and SMGs, I think. I'm not sure that's exactly how it works, though.

Isn't it possible to use the chopper to travel from one LZ to another without leaving Afghanistan? It works on Mother Base, but the "select LZ" button is not available in Afghanistan.

It's kinda annoying to only have the option to travel for minutes on horse back, or to get out of the area and load back in.

I'd like to know this, too.

Ah ok thanks, I was just worried in case I get invaded and my guys are running around with a vest and handgun Bruce Willis style lol.

Am I missing something with these
Mist Unit
boss fights?
How do I get them to stop regenerating their damn shield so often?
Shit is ridiculous as a non-lethal player.

Early impressions (post prologue + first main mission + fucking around).

+ Sublime stealth. Feels so, so good to play and the more open environments, reminiscent of Ground Zeroes, are exactly what I wanted. Proper evolution of Metal Gear's gameplay and I feel more like what Kojima envisioned for MGS4.
+ Play and game systems feel improved over Ground Zeroes, which already played well.
+ Clean, vibrant IQ and aesthetic. Looks nice at 1440p.

- Prologue drags a little bit, but was still good from a "barely interactive opening tutorial" perspective.
- Seems they're telegraphing the big twist pretty fucking obviously early on.
- Weird frame drops at specific moments during cutscenes. Rare and I don't really give a shit so whatever.

+/- Visually, while nice, this is pretty fucking obviously a cross generation game. Great lighting and overall aesthetics go a long way, and it doesn't bother me, but yeah. I mean, a lot of basic geometry, flat surfaces, very simple terrain and scene density.
+/- Clearly KojiPro's first open world game. It's kind amusing that you have "mission areas" which lock you into (admittedly large) zones of play space rather than truly utilising the open world.
+/- Combing the above two points, the open world area zoning is pretty transparent. Probably a combination of building for last generation hardware (hiding streaming, limiting area scope), and also KojiPro bottlenecking level design in their first open world game. Lots of impassable ridges and mountains, funnelling you towards large place spaces where objectives and structures lie. Actually pretty reminiscent of Far Cry 2.

tldr; gud game

As long as one sees the yellow save icon can they Return To Title Menu or will I lose all progress during the current mission?

I basically just started, am on the first mission after the prologue, and did the first objective, but it is close to my bed time, so just wondering if I can Return To The Title screen or if I should just leave it paused and put my PS4 into Rest Mode.

If anyone can answer fairly soon, would be greatly appreciated.

This R&D target practice

Lol I know right, took me some time, but best is to equip night vision goggles and look for rectangular yellow shapes.

I'd like to know this, too.

There is a fast travel system, but it isn't that.

There's a cardboard box postal service in the open worlds. It's obvious when you're in Mother Base, but it isn't only there. You collect the invoice at a location and you are then able to be delivered there from another collection point.

I haven't used it myself, though.

Ah ok thanks, I was just worried in case I get invaded and my guys are running around with a vest and handgun Bruce Willis style lol.

I think you can actually invade your own base to see what they are equipped with. I put the GMP up for expensive protection and my guys and gals were wearing decked out armour.

I wouldn't get defensive about spoilers after you ruined the med bay thing for some folks.
I'm not getting defensive, how's that defensive? I was just saying it's not a spoiler considering it's a known feature and has been for ages.
How did I ruin the med bay scene? I said how to unlock it, I didn't tell them what it contained. If I'd posted spoilers I'd be banned.

Edit: Ah I see what you mean, not exactly a spoiler as she was in the trailer lol.

I'm so confused.
I just beat episode 1 but I only beat two of the mission tasks which were get intel and rescue kaz but it looks like I didn't finish 4? What are they? Are they side ops? Should I start over? What am I missing here?

Quite enjoying it so far... The gameplay is pretty great, and I'm enjoying the sandboxed nature of the game. Hats off to KP for being able to keep it stealth but making it much more open. Possibilities for how to tackle a mission are numerous and really make you think.

Regarding spoilers, it would be cool if people would prefix their spoilers with the number of the episode they are currently playing. Without any hint I am hesitant to open any spoilers as I haven't finished the game yet.

Those are optional objectives that you can try when replaying the mission, they are not mandatory.

They are optional objectives. You don't need to do them. They are there to give you something to do if you replay a mission; essentially, complete the mission however you like first time through, complete it a second time and do these things for a higher score.

So who else is not a fan of how that stupid max payne time messed with alert mechanics

I turned it off but all it means is that the guards still act as a hive mind the second someone shouts contact

How do I get
Quiet
to come out of the
prison cell
?

Went to
visit her
but nothing happens.

Keep playing the story missions &
she will eventually become a buddy to acompany you. She is in the cell because no one trusts her.

But that isn't cool.

I've taken to leaving on the top of a crate.

Speaking of you've been playing the game for awhile. Beaten it yet?

I do that as well. I beat "chapter 1" of the story.
First ending credits rolled. Still more to do.
64 hours in & so much more to do

Are the servers down? I want my login bonus. I was able to log in earlier once, but that was right when I started the game. It said I wouldn't? get the bonus until I was past a certain point in the game.

Is there a good set of recommended key bindings on m&kb?

I love riding in the back of trucks here. Is there a way to lift yourself up slightly while in prone first-person like what was possible in MGS3?

So I just found DD. When do I get to use him?
When do I find Quiet? I want her as early as possible so we can be friends.

Spoiler tag answers, please. :)

why would you spoil this for yourself

big progression stuff like that just happens as you play through the main missions

just play man, it's impossible to miss

Regarding quiet becoming a buddy (spoiler for when you've already made contact)

Anyone else try throwing a bunch of smoke grenades on top of her cell and calling a chopper and getting a cutscene? Or does that cutscene play for everyone? My thought process was if no one can monitor her, she can escape and thought I was brilliant when I got the scene. Haha but it might just be a coincidence.

D-Dog needs time to grow up. It took several hours for me. Quiet is
in a location in Afghanistan. Once you travel to said location, she will attack you & a boss fight ensues. I'm not sure if it matters where you are in the story.

For people stuck on the install screen without the time moving.

Upload your save file to the cloud. Delete it from your PS4 and restart it. Download your save file from the cloud and restart the game.

i'll say this: I really dont like the Rank system, same way I didnt in GZ altho that game being so small it wasnt that big an issue

it bothers me that the thing it cares about most is SPEED waaaay above the rest. As someone who likes to go through the missions and get the best outcome I can as I go rather than replay them later (I do eventually, some of them), the fact that speed limits my exploration of the mission knowing it'll lower my score is kind of a bad decision

add to that the fact that the secondary objectives are a mistery until you actually get them and the whole thing is just really counter intuitive. somehow have to go as fast as possible through the mission but completing a bunch of objectives that are secret and require exploration?

S ranking is always for replays I guess but this time around they're extremely going for that
