I've shared this tip not too long ago, but just to refresh for some people:

You can go into options after completing a side op or mission and select "go back to ACC", you'll return to your chopper menu for free. You lose no GMP by having to call in your chopper and you don't have to wait for it to arrive.

Does it work for story missions?

I'm about 7 missions in, and while the game is obviously fantastic from a gameplay pov, I can't help feeling like this is going to be this gens MGS4, meaning the fanbase's opinion on the game will likely shift after the hype dies down. As mentioned before, the "open world" being empty and kind of a drag to navigate is a huge issue, and it's definitely more PW than classic MGS. The lack of story or real context for your missions also makes the entire game feel completely disjointed, which is also not helped by the weird choice to constantly have credits rolling.

Still, I'm having a damn good time playing. I'm just glad I came to terms early with the fact that classic MGS died after 4.

I don't know if it'll have the same backlash 4 had. MGS4 was to one extreme, and this feels like a Metal Gear made specifically for people who fucking hated that extreme.

...except the intro. I dunno who that was for.

mgs4 got the reception it did because it has all of about 2 hours of decent gameplay sandwiched between hours of asscrap cutscenes

Anybody know if I will still get my daily bonuses on PC if you can't connect online? I couldn't get my game to work online at all yesterday. First due to an error then because of maintenance.

I love taking out an outpost and leaving only 1 guy there, he freaks out and gets really paranoid that none of his comrades are there, love it.

This game is massively overwhelming, which is pretty exciting. I am on main mission 5 and have been doing any side-ops that show up because I don't want to miss anything. I have no idea what is going on at MB, but i'm sure more will be explained as I progress.

I guess it would be less overwhelming to know that I can go back to any of the missions and do more stuff.

Yeah, I never said there would be backlash for the same reasons as MGS4, only that I think the fanbase's opinion will shift after the initial wave of hype dies down a bit.

This game does the stealth stuff best out of any MGS game so far. It's a shame it doesn't really feel like a Metal Gear game to me though. It just feels really dry.
Probably because even Big Boss is bored with it. Kiefer really ruined this game for me, he just seems so fucking bored the entire time and due to his expensive quality, only talks once every 5 hours. This is definitly not a metal gear game to me, wish it was called PeaceWalker 2.

The gameplay is great though. But that's never been my draw into metal gear.

So do the naked and scarf versions of the camo's have any gameplay impact?

Also the fox engine sure is something. Surprised at how well it runs on my laptop.

Yeah, thanks. Just read it. I've fultoned a bunch of weapons and cars.
Ok, had to repost as it got buried quickly.
Thanks!

Is there any point for the guns?

I just found out last night that I could drive a Jeep after I'm done with a mission and it'll become branded as my own. Didn't know how many people know that...
Yeah you can assign them to the FOB's but they aren't essential as they serve no purpose other than for the invader to steal. So you may as well sell them all.

Edit: Although you can develop an anti theft device for the stuff on the FOB's so it'd help discover an intruder so it's best to keep a few of everything to catch the sneaky buggers.

how many 2008 GOTY votes do we need to prove the fanbase's opinion on MGS4 didn't change and the people who don't like it are simply way louder about it?

How do outposts work? If you kill/ extract everyone are they gone forever?

I hear of 'taking' outposts but I don't really understand what it means!

played first mission and got to mother base. This game is a big time commitment and will prove to be difficult to play given what people are saying about the checkpoint system. I was taking my time on that first mission, play time thus far must be 3 hours or so just in these intro areas.

I love it, this is what I've always wanted from MGS. I really don't care for the story. Open ended stealth. It's great and I frankly don't quite understand the backlash. This gameplay feels like the natural progression of what Kojima had always been trying to achieve. A full stealth sandbox.

Scope the area, mark targets, figure out a stealth route or take down soldiers, determine
an exit, throw the goods or person on the chopper and jet off to your offshore base.

it's good stuff so far and I'm looking forward to digging in more. It's the sort of game where it's as good as you make it I think.

Even though it seems like the opinion shifted on MGS4, it didn't really. The thing won GOTY here twice. I think it's just that fans of games with some backlash and vocal haters get really tired of defending it, so soon the threads on it become negative only.

It'll be interesting what happens here. Personally I'm a huuuuuuge fan of MGS4, and so far I'm still kind of iffy on MGS5. There's a lot of good, but also there's a lot I prefer about the MGS4 style.

what platform should I add to mother base first? R&D?
That's what most have done, R&D is essential as everything in the development window is tied to it.
Of course it's up to you, but if you want to upgrade your stuff sooner then you'd be wise to invest in R&D.

The missions ending in TBC followed by snake in ACC to select the next mission so as to follow up on the previous mission's cutscene is so immersion breaking.

Votes aren't necessary. MGS4 is bad as far as the series is concerned, and if hadn't been the much hyped 'Last iteration of the Metal Gear Solid saga' it would have been viewed as such.

Everything after Act 2 relies of nostalgia and revealing secrets. Act 3 onwards might as well of been a comic book.

I just finished the prologue and Ch. 1 and I'm confused who the two characters were in the prologue. If you find out later in the game please don't say anything. But did I miss something? I'll put my questions in spoiler tags for those that haven't completed the prologue.

Whose face did you customize at the start of the game? Was that big boss? Or was that guy who was helping you escape the hospital? I might have just made the customization look too close to big boss but the guy I was playing as looked exactly like big boss.

Also what happens to the guy who was helping us escape? He died in the escape ambulance, right?

Total utter bullshit. It's viewed as a fantastic game cause that is what it was. People love a game you don't like, deal with it.

I think this game is the anti MGS4 in a lot of ways. Especially in terms of presentation,; MGS4 was basically one long interactive movie, MGSV is basically gameplay driven first, story now ushered to the back, the exposition the series is known for also pushed now on to the tapes and real time radio. It's a completely different approach. I can see the MGS4 fans hating this game more than others. For me, it brings me back to days of MGS1, when the cutscenes were a real treat whenever you get them, rather than in vast abundance.

Go to resources tab in mother base and sell stuff you don't need. I have easily a million GMP in excess plants sitting there. It's like my bank.
Wow, just in plants? That's crazy, I best check too
You're gonna lose points for every kill and you can't put dead people on your team so you're missing out on development opportunities.
Ahh but there's hidden bonuses if your evil in the game.

votes are absolutely necessary when the claim is about the fanbase's opinion.

I don't really care what your personal opinion on MGS4 was, as it's not relevant to the point.

Ok.

You might just want to let the game answer those questions.

So, killing people vs tranqing them. What are the benefits/drawbacks in terms of ranking/gameplay?

To me the main upside to nonlethal in MG games is that people often don't totally freak out when they find a sleeping dude and just wake him up rather than alerting the whole country. Also quieter, and you get a score bonus in missions for no kills.

The downside is of course that they DO wake back up. In some cases pretty quickly, like a plain old CQC throw doesn't last long.

I just think it's more fun and in the spirit of the stealth genre to play nonlethally. It also makes me get more creative, for example I am in love with smoke bombs and the bionic aaaaaaarm now. I did some Rambo playthroughs in GZ and it was actually easier but not as fun. Well, the shotgun is great. But there's a nonlethal shotgun in TPP! I loved that in MGS4.
