The stories about the development of Destiny are so much better then the actual story in Destiny.
What a shame how bungie has transformed under activision. What used to be my favorite game developer is now just trash. And the game that was the successor to halo is a huge disappointment.
I can't stand the MMO grinding and repeating content design of the game.
Can't wait to jump into this juicy writing.
Publicly admit that the Destiny that was released is far from what was intended, Bungie. Man up, swallow your pride, and admit it. Confess that men in suits who don't play video games at all dictated the direction of the game.
If I had the ability to time travel I'd like to travel back to the boardroom meeting where all of the Bungie higher ups decided working for Activision was a good idea / better than working for Microsoft.
And then laugh at them.
Ryan and other Bungie management felt that his conduct hurt the Bungie team, hurt the game, drove a negative online discussion, and violated Ryans instructions.

Way to go, Marty!
And thank you that we finally have confirmation that Bungie's deal with the devil screwed the original vision and original story of the game.

I agree. I'm sure after a decade+ of Halo and staring down another one the alternative of Activision seemed a lot better and with their reputation and skill Activision would surely be happy to let them work to make Destiny how they wanted right?Really shows the influence of Activision on the whole product. Bungie had big issues with Microsoft at times, but the definitely seemed to have a mutual understanding when it came to the creative process.
Seriously though. A massive script re-write a month before the initial planned launch, changes to game mechanics that they had previously talked about/shown (and were presumably far along in development), and firing of a key Bungie staff member. Destiny's development tops the Mass Effect 3 ending fiasco as my most anticipated tell all of 'what the hell happened' when someone eventual spills the beans years from now. It sounds like Game of Thrones: Game Dev Edition. The stories about the development of Destiny are so much better then the actual story in Destiny.
Because Activision used different music for the trailer. His reaction sounds completely unprofessional.O’Donnell reacted angrily and believed Activision had overstepped its proper role by assuming artistic control of the trailer music. Ryan, the CEO of Bungie, and management shared his concern and filed a “veto” letter with Activision, which overruled the objection. During E3, O’Donnell tweeted that Activision, not Bungie, had composed the trailer music. He also threatened Bungie employees in an attempt to keep the trailer from being posted online, and interrupted press briefings.
The fact that Marty essentially quit on the audio team after not getting his way is really poor form.
If you actually read through the article, it paints Marty in a worse light in my opinion.
Tbh O'Donnell looks worse here. Sounds like both sides were shitty.
I'm glad other people agree with this. Does not mean that the man does not deserve what is owed to him, but behaving like a child is unacceptable.I agree with both of you. He really does to be honest. The findings really seem to be more damaging to him in spite of the finding for him. I know if I was an employer and an employee was more concerned with releasing their music instead of focusing on the game I'd be a bit put off. Then it says he interrupted briefings and threatened other employees. At that point I'd probably be looking into reprimanding him too. Then he takes time off comes back and from the looks of it wasn't really doing his work. To me that doesn't sound like someone I'd want working for me to be honest.
Now Bungie were no angels either in all this. They shouldn't have tried to take his stock no doubt. So yea while they look bad I think he looks the worst to be honest.
Bungie isn't going to publicly burn the bridge it has to one of the world's largest publishers, something that could very well have rippling effects when it comes to seeking other partners in the future. I'm sure you'll hear stories from the mouths of former employees, but those who'd like to keep their job are going to stay silent.
I guess the problem is, where else could they go for the kind of funding they need for what their vision (however well they executed it) requires? But I agree, it seems they are even less independent now than they were with Microsoft at the time of their leaving. While you lay it on thick here, I do find it interesting that they left MS because (according to rumors) they wanted more creative freedom and to work on multiple projects, not just one (Halo).
Now it appears Activision is exercising a lot of will upon Bungie and for the next 10 years they will be working on only Destiny.

Were it so easy...
Activision will only listen to money so even with the very sub-par reviews for Bungie's standard the money it made will probably make the Activision suits feel justified in their meddling.
Man up? I'm pretty sure burning the bridge and basically ensuring your company dies and hundreds of employee's lose their job isn't manning up. It's insane.

Has there been any leaks to what the original Destiny story was? I cant imagine it being worse than what we got. I don't even remember any of it besides kings, wizards, a moon and some other shit.
Honestly I really don't think Bungie "decided". I think it was a mutual thing between Bungie and Microsoft. I don't think Bungie could just say "ahh we don't want to be owned by you anymore"Geez, how bad was Microsoft that Bungie decided Activision was a better option?
Activision, evidently.
Fuck Activision.
And shame on Bungie for losing their way and getting sucked into the giant black hole that Activision is.
Sounds like all parties were shitheads in this. Sounds like Marty got a big head and became a bit arrogant. Then from there it went to hell. Sounds like Bungie overreacted to try and bring him down to earth and well from there things just kept escalating. Just sad to read all around.

Judging from the game, it seems more like the story was ripped out and they didn't have time to put a cohesive one back in. Can't think of a recent game of this magnitude where that happened in development.Destiny had it's story change while being worked on.
In other words.
Game development.
Seems like Marty turned into a bad employee, so I'm not surprised he got fired.
However, Bungie fucked up by trying to steal his shares.

Is this true? I stand corrected. Haven't played that game or looked much into it, so I can't speak to the state of the story.bioshock infinite
Marty wasn't just any employee, he was a high ranking founding member had been with the company since before it was even called Bungie and he knew its brass for years and years.
Wait what?
Because you co founded bungie and had been working there for 20 years, right? That's a pretty bullshit statement right there.
