MGSV: The Phantom Pain has shipped 3 million units worldwide

It's almost at 500k on PC. I'd imagine PS4 has to be at least 1.5 mil at this point and Xbox One also at least 500k.

~90% of PC purchases are digital at this point, rendering its inclusion in shipped numbers meaningless. You are essentially comparing two unrelated values and drawing a conclusion, there will be some overlap between physical PC versions sold and Steamspy numbers, but they will be minimal.

3 million units shipped in week is damn good. Wonder how many digital versions people bought.

Can't wait to see what the number is after a month or even at the end of the year with sales and potential bundles.

How does that compare to what Destiny did last year?

I wonder how many people who bought the first one last year will stick around for the expansion pack this year...

I'm pretty sure these numbers are combination of shipped and digital.

Konami: "MGS V has failed to meet sales expectations. We needed at least 15m in the first week to break even."

91k on steam peak...if what develo[ers say its true, then pc version is about 900k sold, more or less..shoudl reacha millin easily in the next few weeks.

Destiny sold through 3 million during its first month in the US alone.

hmmmmmmmmm

that's pretty good.

I wonder how many of these people will stick around for the expansion. I got Destiny last september, finished the single player in about a week, and will never play it again, or anything else with Destiny on the box.

In regards to PC sales, I've been an MGS diehard since MGS1 and bought all the titles on Playstation consoles, but, I 've been a PC gamer for the last 5+ years and did not buy a PS4. The choice of platform was obvious. I'm sure there are plenty of people in my boat.

But Konami was "mad" because Hideo Kojima spend too much money developing the game and that's why they fired him...

Great that it's selling so well. Also, based off of ZhugeEX's data from the first page, I'm surprised Snake Eater only sold 4 million!

I'm very interested in seeing the PS4/PS3 split in the Media Create thread.

My Walmart sold out on PS4 over the first few days when it came out, and we just got 9 more copies in stock today. We already sold 3, possibly 4.

I noticed Best Buy by me was completely sold out on PS4 two days ago. They said they had about 25 PS4 copies in the back (they were sold out of PS4 versions on the sales floor during launch day, and an employee had to grab a copy for me and another guy moments after I purchased my copy).

I'm noticing that the game is primarily selling on PS4 and is just about only sold out on PS4. I never personally sold a copy on Xbox One, 360, or PS3 yet.

'Shipped' generally implies physical copies shipped to stores, not total copies sold, not digital.

I know what shipped means. Publishers usually combine shipments and digital sales to pad out the numbers. This isn't a press release so there's no confirmation but it wouldn't surprise me if that's what's going one.

I don't know about the budget of the game, but if it only breaks even it's not a very good investment. The more a company invests money on something, the more they expect to get from it. Simply being profitable doesn't mean much.

Just saying that as a general statement. It'll continue to sell obviously, though games generally have a tendency to be rather front loaded.

Yeah, of course, but it's actually been profitable within its first month already. Every game sold is a profit now.

Game is still chugging along on the STEAM charts. It will probably see a million in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Just look at Rocket league. Game is already over a million.

I feel the PC version will be the secondo highest sold version by years end and the highest selling version after a good couple couple of sales. Sort of like how Dark Souls 1 and 2 outsold any other platform.

Don't worry, when that happens consoles gamers stop separating their platforms and lump their numbers together to contend with it.

Even when PES was vastly superior to FIFA, it still sold significantly less. It has always maintained a small but loyal fanbase, its getting back to its best nowadays as well.

Wow, I always thought that PES was way way bigger then FIFA during the PS2 era, me and my friends bought one every single year since PES5 and never even entertain the thought of playing FIFA.

Fifa sold on having an official license the fact that you could play teams like Yeovil and rise them to the premiership is what broadened it's appeal to everyone in the UK, modern day Fifa now has both the license and the gameplay and it's only rised higher and higher since.

Don't bring that nonsense into the thread please. It's a great number for a great game, leave it at that. Tons of gamers on PC buy more than one version anyway. Just stop.

It's actually my boat, but you are welcome to stay.

That's just terminology. All those decades they used 'shipped' so when digital happened they stuck with this term, clarifying that from now on it will include all physical copies shipped + digital sales. There's no logic in announcing an overall number of sold copies but choosing to use a lower figure.

Ehh that'd be quite a big jump. And considering it's not selling gangbusters on the Xbox or the last gen consoles, expecting the PS4 to handle the bulk of that is kinda unrealistic.

I think it'll too out at 6-7

MGS4 sold as much on PS3 alone. The franchise remaining stagnant, even while expanding to other platforms is more unlikely. I think it will easily take the top spot for best selling MGS game. Above 10m is my guess. 12m? Even better. Guessing splits I would go with PS3 + PS4 taking the lion's share with PC duking it out with XBO + 360.

Enjoy the success of this game, Konami. It might well be your last time.

I hope Kojima directs something new in the future and that it is as successful as MGS.

Yeah, this is the first MGS that wasn't platform exclusive at launch, so you'd think that long term it'll be the best selling game in the series.

That said, it's also been a very long gap between 5 and the last "major" entry in the series (seven years, compared to the 3-4 years between each of the first four games) so it's possible interest has waned a bit. Also note that the two best-selling entries in the series so far released at much less competitive times than this one has- MGS2 and 4 were arguably the first "major" releases for their respective platforms in terms of how anticipated they were, whereas 3, which sold well but significantly less than 2 and 4, released in the same season as a shitload of other big titles.

Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid 2 both sold over 7,000,000, and Metal Gear Solid IV sold over 6,000,000.

There is no way for Metal Gear Solid V sells so low... 9/10 million at very least.

Never underestimate the amount of PC gamers who will wait for a Steam sale before buying a game, no matter how big or popular it may be. The PC sales could go through the roof between now and the end of the year if we see a decent price drop during the Steam Winter Sale, which I'm guessing will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-33%.

Not sure, if you extracted only the % margin per copy after steam/sony takes their fat cut or printing + retail cut, add in other expenses like marketing, it might take awhile.

If Konami makes like triple the amount they spent developing the game, are they not satisfied with that? It's a shame that they are sitting on that awesome Fox Engine and they decide to disband the team responsible for creating it. Silent Hills, MGSVI, ZOE3, new Castlevania...think of all the awesome AAA games that could have been!
