Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

Can I mention how amazing it is seeing characters we've been with for a year FINALLY interacting with each other and having their personality out? Seeing Cayde, Eris, etc. in their full glory is amazing and something I've been wishing for

Finally finished all the main story missions. I'm really satisfied with how tight and focused of a package this turned out to be. The story had a concise goal with an emphasis on fun character interactions and embracing the sci-fi/high fantasy anachronisms, which in turn gave it more of an identity than its ever had. As much as I loved Eris' scenery chewing line, "Fingertips on the surface of my mind!", the writing still wasn't much to write home about; however, it did add a sense of character to this world that was so sorely needed.

The expansion of prior locations in old missions and raids had more meaning than the thinly veiled corner cutting from the older DLCs. It certainly helped with how invested I have been in this game and how many times I've run through the revisited locations that they comment on.

Mission and encounter design ended up being a lot more lively than I expected as well. On top of fun combat arenas, they have you doing more things beyond simply propping up your ghost and fighting off waves of enemies. There's a good amount of variety in TTK that was nonexistent in the base Destiny missions and only slightly came into play in House of Wolves. While they may just be mechanics that are only used for a mission and aren't expanded upon much later (can't say for the Dreadnaught stuff just yet), they do help to punctuate the narrative's active desire to have the player see and do new things.

The few boss encounters also added to that with them being more focused on involved stages and pushing you out of comfort zones rather than aimlessly firing at them for an overly extended period of time. I dunno if I'd call them great, but they are most certainly a step in the right direction.

With everything it set out to do and largely succeeded at, I couldn't be more satisfied with the main missions as a slick 3-4 hour journey. It actually gave me some ODST quality vibes (which I loved) in spots. Now bring on that end game!

Kinda unrelated to TTK, but after seeing all this Destiny news I decided to put the original game in to play but its like never even reading that there's a disk in there so I can't play. Any clue what's up with that?

Gonna try and poopsock to finish the vanilla campaign, but you guys think it'll be easy to find Vault of Glass and Crota's End raiders who will go in blind? I want to experience what made them so fun/frustrating to play when you never knew what to do.

Only thing I could think of is to make sure the disk is clean.

Decided to go back to my Hunter from the Warlock I started now. Just unlocked Nightstalker, time to go through TTK's story again lol. Anyone want to join or anyone starting TTK's story now want some company?

Played Destiny for a bit, kinda quit playing after only about level 17 and never touched it again. Is this one worth it?

Hard to say. I quit a couple weeks after Vault of Glass went live I guess, but had hit level 20 and maxed out both Hunter subclasses etc. I mostly was unhappy with endgame and the way loot was handled.

The Taken King's story stuff is much improved and there seems to be plenty of quests and stuff to do afterward. And some other areas have seen varying degrees of improvement. I still don't know how I'll feel once I get to the equivalent of where I was in vanilla, but we'll see.

I feel like, if your problem was the game as a whole, well then it still won't be for you. But if there were nitpicks, or it was about overall content(not just story campaign missions though since it's still somewhat light there) then it could be worth it.

Gunsmith quest.

Better weapon is my blatant LDR 5001 with Firefly 2.0...

Infusion is so confusing, what do I do with my exotic armour?

gunsmith quest o.o? how do I gfet those?

@all it has been a long time since I woke up in the morning only thinking about "I want to play that freaking game" but here I am, morning coffee and ps4 turned on.

I swear Venus has zero VIP target patrol missions. I've been around Venus like five times and not one time has it appeared.

Hmm can´t remember doing a VIP mission there actually. Look for the Skull and Crossbones patrol instead. They are harder but should be fine.

I don't know fully. I mean, I did the story quests up until the strikes were done and then did most (of not all) of the Crucible ones until it started to try force me being Dead Orbit. But then again, I am probably higher level (LV2 Gunsmith) because I found an artefact in the cosmodrome that ranked me up quite a bit.

I will say playing the final 'main' story mission at Light Level 240...

Made me realize the fight had more mechanics than I had saw at the first time cause he died so easily.

Calling it a night after the main story, and two strikes. I have nine (!!!) active quests, a few of which are for what look like full fledged missions. Haven't touched Gunsmith stuff, or the new patrols, or Court of Oryx, or two of the strikes, or Rift, or the new strike playlists, daily story, Nightfall, and (of course) the raid. I beat the campaign and feel like the game just started.

What have you been doing this day that was not destiny?
I barely managed to get all my free items today :(...

Absolutely.

I just finished it with a couple of friends. We were under leveled (around 225) so it was a pretty good challenge, but never felt absurd and cheap.

I'm finishing the day at 234 light. Lots and lots of quests to do.

I played for about six hours today, two this morning and four this evening, before and after a full day at work. I didn't do much that wasn't work or Destiny, though. Tomorrow is back to normal.

Anyone want to join in and help me kill the Taken champion in the Rocketyard?

It's starting now!

Join ZW33.

Reading stuff like this makes me appreciate proper chat/clan systems so much more.

And also kind of baffled there's still no proper map function in your Ghost.

Yup. I honestly think it's one of the best fights in the game.

I really dislike that you can't really earn much legendary marks now, what's the point of removing the 200 cap if you are going to take away the means to achieve it?

Good to hear, thanks.

Gotta try to resist researching classes etc. at work for the rest of today now! I always go the tankiest class anyway. :)

Titans might look like they are the tanks but they aren't, Warlocks are the tanks in this game.

Yup..this is Blackhammer 2.0
Although it might be harder to trigger the perk with 4 headshots instead of 3.

Thanks.

Now I'm just wondering what's the cheapest way for me to get the first two DLCs and The Taken King.

The $60 "legendary edition" includes it all, so for $20 more than TTK itself you get it all. And I keep seeing deals like trade-ins or bonus credit and stuff but I don't actually remember any of them lol.

If you're physical, you could trade in your original copy for credit somewhere toward Legendary TTK since it includes everything.

* all they did was have someone re-read Dinklage's lines in a more up-beat way cause their previous attempts to just alter the speed of his original voice apparently didnt do the trick
* horrible mouse user interface that just makes things take for ever since it always idles on screen halfway from where anything you could select is located in relation to and its slow as fuck
* ridiculous action prompts that either require you to hold it down 5 seconds to fill a circle yet other actions require you to merely press it once and it gives you a count down timer to cancel
* still no proper map with custom waypoints so you can know where to go to take your green highlighted items if you just started playing.
* still have to keep pressing and holding the touch pad for 3-4 seconds so the waypoints that do exist stay on screen
* takes literally 5 minutes real time to just fully boot into the game to where you're controlling your character on land
* takes 5 minutes each time you load back into the hub after missions
* shitty radar
* slow as fuck aim down sight animation
* no custom speed sliders for vertical and horizontal directions
* no custom audio sliders for music/effects/voice
* the many parts of the game has no audio at all (just like all their Halo games)
* even if you set your party to local other people can kill enemies you're engaged with which negates you being able to level up
* cant change the look of your character till level 40
* every mission is still go here, scan some shit, shoot enemies till scanning stops
* the game is only at v1.15 and already tripled its original 17 gig size on your storage

since I didnt play prior to this 1.15 patch yet literally everything above plagued the original release, I can only assume that if they think getting slightly better rated equipment after each boss fight vs nothing (apparently was the complaint) yet the mission structure and game play is the exact same, nothing about that makes me wanna play more.

especially as I'm en-route to level 4 mission some (??) ranked enemies just suddenly spawn an wreck my shit in 1 shot and I noticed even the enemies they intended me to fight at slightly higher levels than mine just simply take longer to kill cause they sponge more and I just have to hide behind cover as my shields regenerate cause they're hurting me more, they dont have any different strategies or rules of engagement, its just how many times i pull the trigger while my cursor is on them and how long i have to keep strafing, all while my weapons which are rated in the 20's yet dont appear to actually have any meaning since level 4 enemies arent dieing any faster than my initial level 5 starter rifle and only my actual character level is what affects the damage my guns produce and all the weapon stats are for is key shaking to keep you distracted.

when you play COD, it doesnt matter if the guy is a level 1 or 60, the person with the same weapon who lands the more shots with the same weapon, gets the kill, its simple

and this is supposed to then make me wanna give them more money for whatever DLC keeps prompting me to buy

id rather buy the Mass Effect trilogy that will surely come out sometime within the next year and replay that, which will also take up less space on my drive than the initial Destiny size

* ridiculous action prompts that either require you to hold it down 5 seconds to fill a circle yet other actions require you to merely press it once and it gives you a count down timer to cancel This is variable and not always the same
* still no proper map with custom waypoints so you can know where to go to take your green highlighted items if you just started playing. Not an issue because the game does not rely on it, you don't even think about it after a few hours. This is a game that people have been playing for hundreds of hours a minimap would have been useless here.

* still have to keep pressing and holding the touch pad for 3-4 seconds so the waypoints that do exist stay on screen Again not an issue, the core content do not even use this function
* takes literally 5 minutes real time to just fully boot into the game to where you're controlling your character on land Play with a fireteam it'll be faster as it won't spend time matchmaking you
* takes 5 minutes each time you load back into the hub after missions see above
* shitty radar There is nothing shit about it, it gives you the direction and changes the intensity depending on the level they are on. It can also be manipulated with crouching. You simply are not used to it, it's close to Halo's radar.
* slow as fuck aim down sight animation It's variable, weapons have different ADS speed. There are gun and character perks for quick ADS and equip speed that stack on top of each other. Your starting gear is ofcourse going to be shitty
* no custom speed sliders for vertical and horizontal directions
* no custom audio sliders for music/effects/voice
* the many parts of the game has no audio at all (just like all their Halo games)
* even if you set your party to local other people can kill enemies you're engaged with which negates you being able to level up This is a non issue, you barely make any xp killing random enemies in public space, you will make a decent amount if you do public event and for that you will need help from random people
* cant change the look of your character till level 40 You can, you start getting different armour pieces soon enough.
* every mission is still go here, scan some shit, shoot enemies till scanning stops You're still playing the vanilla game I assume
* the game is only at v1.15 and already tripled its original 17 gig size on your storage Well they did add a ton of stuff since the original release

You have BARELY played the game. For a game that is about end game content it's not fair to judge it based on the first hour. You haven't played any strikes, or raids or arena...anything. You haven't even gotten to a point where you get different armour to wear !

Also I disliked the cursor based user interface at first but considering how it works it simply would not have been possible to do with a traditional UI. There's too much stuff here and it would have been PAINFULLY slow if it wasn't a cursor based UI. When you have 10 different weapons for each weapon class in your inventory and want to switch between them, when you have several different tabs or when you have tabs within tabs (such as the roaster)....a traditional UI just would not have cut it.

If anything the UI is one of the most perfect things about Destiny from its presentation to its functionality.

So the Stormcaller Bond, which is an exotic, only has 170 defence, yet you can get a blue with 220. That's not right, surely?

The overwhelmingly positive sentiment here does seem to hide the obvious issues with the game which will likely never be addressed. However, the latest version is without a doubt marginally more enjoyable than the initial release. I've only really jumped back in because a few friends effectively paid for me to join them but i'm taking it slow this time and just going along for the ride.

The 'hype' is definitely exaggerated though but i suppose people just have/had really really low expectations given what has come before

The obvious issues he wrote about are non issues and completely made up. More than half of the things on his list are simply because he didn't even play it past level 4.

Anyone who is doing end game now, can you help me find the
sword
? the guides I'm finding online are wrong, or dont take into account that the drops are sometimes different.

We get it dude you don't like the game. You've been pretty much beating a dead horse since I was at work over 8 hours ago.

They also brought Nolan in to record all the new dialogue the Ghost has in TTK instead of bringing back Dinklage that many didn't care for.

Sorry you don't enjoy the game but many people do and many people dont. You have honestly shared the sentiment that you do not many times today already.

Originally I was going to buy my Monte Carlo Year 2... But decided to hold off on any Exotic Year 2 upgrades till my armor is full 280.

i like how you brushed over most of the stuff and the things you do the excuse is that "who cares, if you've beein doing this same shit since the beginning you'd know this already"

and yeah ive only seen the rank up announcement 3 times up to rank 6 before stopping while playing the open world en-route to mission battles that finally lock people out, so yeah, it totally doesnt matter, those numbers flying out of those characters are meaningless, but thanks random level 40 fucker who comes by an kills everyone in 1 shot, you have fun with that

also, was that "if i give them more money to unlock better missions in their DLC, or grind to level 40 to reach better missions...which is just a raid which you can end up with literally nothing for it" supposed to be a burn or something, because im daring to play "vanilla" destiny after Bungie's own hype about the entire core of the game being overhauled?

raids, which dont unlock till level 40 "are when the fun starts"

literally the same exact arguments prior to this patch that people were saying, "oh once you unlock the raids or later rank stuff THEN it gets good"
