Karin announced for SFV

I really believe the announcer just effed this one up. "Karen" is a fine enough pronunciation. It's like like how Samus' last name in proper Japanese is more correctly be pronounced "Ah-rahn" but no one actually cares and the games say it like "Aaron" anyway.

I mean, yes, the announcer is announcing it relatively close to the correct Japanese pronunciation (edit: don't really like Google Translate's pronunciation, if you listen for her name here you'll get a better idea of how it sounds in speech). That being said, it's certainly no coincidence that the Japanese character with Western style has a name that could reasonably pass as both Japanese and Western. It's meant to transfer between the two easily, so I don't think it's necessarily entirely wrong to pronounce it the way we're inclined to in English.

But being totally honest the reason I typically use the Western pronunciation is the same reason I use the Westernized pronunciation of "anime" as opposed to the correct one, it just sounds more natural in English speech and is more readily understood lol. I think having the announcer's pronunciation be "labored but correct" suits its purpose well enough.

KAH-Reen. It's a Japanese name so it's pronounced in the Japanese way.

I'd say it's a german name, but what do I know...

add: Been living for one and a half years in Japan, and never met or heard of a single girl named "Karin" in that time. On the other hand, in Germany it's a regular and popular name. Pronounced "Kah-Rin".

Surprised that I see no one with Karin's new render as their avatar.. Saw Mika all over the place when she was revealed (and after).

Same, everyone that wanted it said that it was too hard. I was like, you know all it takes is cropping an image to 100x120 pixels right?

I'm pretty sure I've seen 佳林 as a name.

500 hours in MS Paint.
MS Paint is still a thing? Da fuck. Takes no time in Ps.

Amazing how much strife there is about the pronunciation of a name lol.

You've been in Japan for 1.5 years and have met every female living there. Impressive.

I'll continue calling her Care-in, because that's how I say it and she's not real so I have no obligation to respect how a sprite or 3d animated model would say it.

I've lived in America for a year and have never met a girl named "April" but I've been to France and met several women named April. Therefore because of my anecdotal experience, it's safe to say that April is not an American name but a french one.

I'd say it's a german name, but what do I know...

And then you say he's affirming he met every single girls in Japan for some random reason.

It's Kah-rin for me since I'm a native Spanish speaker and we pronounce it almost (if not) exactly as Japanese people would. I'm always baffled by people pronouncing Ryu's name as Ry-yoo, then again, some people here tend to pronounce Guile as Gee-leh so I guess it's fair for native English speakers to pronounce Karin in their language.

Yeah they'll probably do like they do in sf4 and have the announcer pronounce some names differently depending on if you're in English or Japanese mode.

English sf4: ay-bel
Jp sf4: ah-bel

The a when pronounced in japanese is a soft ah sound
Rin would be pronounced normally as r-in
So it should sound as
Kah-rin
