I had no idea there was a cutscene with Eli fighting Ocelot. This was great. It's highly missable, though. Happens around the mid-twenties while visiting Mother Base. Shortly before the outbreak reaches fever pitch.

The fuuuuuck? In my game, Eli literally never even opened his mouth until his final scene where he skedaddles with Metal Gear. Got him in Mission 23 or whatever, and he didn't speak a single word until halfway through Chapter 2.

Which schmuck's idea was it to hide cutscenes in a Metal Gear game?

I did'nt get that the first time either. I also did'nt get the cut scene before his sorta boss fight the first time either. It's neat that things can change like that depending on the time/ what you do, but it's super annoying to miss cut scenes like that in a game where there needs to be cut scenes. Another bad idea: Credits that spoil things.

Did you not like it? :(

Eli never speaks, Ocelot never does anything interesting... Now I find out there's a cutscene where both of those things happen, but it's apparently randomly triggered or something so you just have to hope you're lucky enough to see it. This fucking game.

Nice of Ocelot to take time out of his busy schedule researching the ancestry of the traditional carrot to help out around the base.

yeah so, how come a kid steal and hide a giant robot ? What became of it ?

And the puppet master ? Who was it ? Young Psycho Mantis ?
Well, the planner was Eli. But it was possible because Huey helped the kids to repair the robot and because Psycho-Mantis could move all the shit. Eli was Miller levels of angry, able to lead the kids and the connection to Mantis. They sold the robot at a car shop so they could eat at Wendy's and Mantis and Eli got into an argument about their favourite character in The Fonz and acted like they were not very closely connected for the rest of their lives.

Ocelot has to spend all his time just trying to figure out who he is and for whom he is working/betraying. By this point in his life he must be a sextuple agent, probably already fighting such a lust to become Eli that he cant keep his accent straight from tape to tape.

I needed Code Talker as a buddy. He would go and distract guards by preaching about parasites. On higher levels he would actually use parasite powers. He got them, he fought Skullface with them in one of the tapes. He could probably use his "eyes" to tag all enemies like D-Dog. The downside would be, that you need to carry him the whole time.

Expository Ocelot is wonderful at dinner parties. The man knows his way around an anecdote. We were all enthralled when he told us how he got his nickname Shabbashaskakala. That was quite the night, quite the night indeed.

By the power of Dine, I summon Vocal Cord Parasites.

An extra conversation between Miller and Ocelot was data mined in the PC version. It was cut, but it's right at the end when Ocelot tells Miller how the series is going to play out in the true ending.

Ocelot: One day Miller we're going to have to pick sides and I'm going to have to attach the severed arm of Eli and hypnotise myself into thinking I'm him in order to trick the system into believing I'm actually him. I'm not. I'm just pretending. ALL FOR BIG BOSS.
Miller: Jesus Christ.

There's another bit that follows that, datamined by a 4Chan user.

Solidus: Damn The Patriots. I know my place in this world, but they will probably make me a footnote at this point. I wish I understood hypnosis techniques like Ocelot... I could be the hero, but I know that I'm destined to be beaten down by Kojima's head-canon. Once more, damn The Patriots, and damn Kojima for relishing everything else EXCEPT me.

Miller: Who the Hell are you? Some nobody...? How did you get on this radio frequency?!

Ocelot: That's an enemy gunship...

This also reminds me that it would've been cool to see Miller and Eli interact, especially with what happened in MGS. I mean we know they did since Miller had a soft spot for him or something for being the only other blonde kid there, but it's all in the tapes.

How did we go from this

What goes around, comes around. Huey couldn't stop running from himself and his crimes forever. And then he killed himself, and tried to take his daughter with him. All-the-while Otacon was boning his step-mom.

The way I see it is this: Damn Huey for the swimming and escort sections in MGS2. All of that stuff is his fault.

Eli is such a little brat in that cutscene

I lol'd so hard when Eli started yelling NOT YET SNAKE IT'S NOT OVER in his little mini boss battle when I'd only spoken to him so far in Kikongo

I guess when he found out about LES he probably had a pretty good idea who I was the moment I turned up

But Eli was so riled up about The Fonz argument - such a lust for proselytism - Mantis couldn't resist his psychic influence, and even though there was deep resentment, they stayed within 15 feet of each other for 20 years - until Solid Snake came in, the new cool kid on the block, and educated them on Happy Days.

That'd be to yourself, to me it doesn't, and the story isn't as bad as some of you make if look like, just like how MGS4 has been trash talked here in gaf for year when it was and it's a fucking awesome game.

I hated MGS4 but love MGSV and think the story in V is good. Imo MGS4 has a story almost as flawed as MGSV's, but it was disgustingly bloated instead of disgustingly truncated. I'd rather disgustingly truncated so that it doesn't waste my time like 4 did, for 10+ hours.

I've not played in a week, but I still keep getting random thoughts about something that happened in the game. That never happens with me.

I'm getting the shakes, might go for some S ranks tonight.

No, no. I meant in The Fonz
They were around Miller and Ocelot for a while after all

FYI folks, in the post-game I made my Avatar looks just like Solid Snake and I've been blasting about pretending I'm playing Solid the whole time. It feels fucking badass. Especially with the Ground Zeroes Sneaking Suit on.

Will post pics and, if anyone wants, the specs for his face, soon. Really fun and is fully giving me the MGS1 vibes I've wanted for years.

Yeah, like, the show?

It's quite something isn't it.

Snake putting Eli's arm out of joint, was that meant to be some kind of vague foreshadowing? I'm not sure what they were trying to say
and here's how Liquid's arm got such a lust for revenge?!

Was the reaction to MGS4 this severe?

i think the reaction to 2 was just as/more severe, and the reaction to MGS4 was also severe but not as extreme as 2 or V

Edit: obviously this is simplifying things, but Kojima basically did the same thing in 2 as he did with V.

Everyone thought they would be playing a fan-favourite guy for the whole thing. It turned out they played him for 10% of the thing and spend the other 90% of it playing the other guy. In MGSV's case, they didn't even know they were playing the other guy.

Bold as fuck. I love it.

I think 2 was hated by casual fans(hence the sales drop for 3) while diehard MGS fans hate 4&5 for their effect on the canon but continue to eat anything MGS anyway.

Nah man, not at all. The thing which made 2 so insanely divisive - similarly to MGSV - was the whole Raiden thing. Even diehard fans hated Raiden. Going in, everyone expected to play Snake the whole time. One hour in and BAM. The rest of your game is with some lame dude, Snake all but out the window. To many, Snake was MGS. Nobody expected/wanted that shit. It had an insanely bad reaction, easily on par with MGSV's Chapter 2 as far as I can recall.

If anything, casual fans probably enjoyed MGS2 more, although the amount of cutscenes was criticised pretty heavily across the board.

Edit: also I think lots of diehard MGS fans love 4 because it is fanservice central. MGSV is the opposite of fanservice, which is one of the big reasons (the biggest imo) this thread is so bitter.

I became a fan when Portable Ops released so I wouldn't know for sure. But there were people claiming to boycott V after Hayter was replaced so it sounds about right. I really hate Venom right now myself.

I wish Kojima didn't go the see-saw route with his critics. Just because Raiden wasn't well received doesn't mean you have to make him into a totally different super badass. Just because MGS4 had too many cutscenes doesn't mean you should almost REMOVE THEM ENTIRELY from the next game. The man goes from zero to eleven and doesn't know how to compromise.

Also, back to Campbell (total non-sequitur here) but I forgot he also had the Fox codename at one point. Chicken Fox. lol. His young self deserved more screen time.

Oh, man. You have no idea. People went batshit crazy when MGS2 came out. It was like a huge slap in the face. Solid Snake in MGS1 was a game changer in terms of videogame protagonists, and in MGS2 Kojima pulled the rug out from under everyone who was hyped for it. Seriously, imagine if it turned out, when MGSV came out, that we played Chico from the start. Imagine if we never even played a Snake or a Boss. And nobody knew. Everybody would be raging. Probably not as raging as with Venom, though, because Kojima would have pulled the trick before. In this case, Kojima tried to pull the same level of stunt but in a way nobody expected. And he nailed it, imo.

I love Venom because Venom is me, as far as I'm concerned. I've swapped over to my custom avatar so now for the next 60+ hours I'm going to be playing a badass MGS version of myself trucking about in Africa and Afghanistan doing MGS-style operations.

The icing on the cake is, as I said above, that I've made my avatar look just like Solid Snake, so it's extra badass.

So, I've done everything except for Side Op 150 & Main Op 45. Such a shame I can't get Gray Fox & Raiden skin, when I want to keep Quiet. I'm maxing now out my units to 99.

How do you switch over to your avatar?

Just finished mission 46 last night so I should have the option?

And how do you go about making solid snake?

It didn't feel like he was trying to make Raiden a badass in MGS4, he was never more emo and whiny than he was in that game. It felt more like Kojima lashing out at the reaction, on the surface Raiden seems like a super cool ninja, but his actual character? goddamn he was depressing.

I don't know if that was the intention obviously, if he was trying to make Raiden cool then he failed horribly.

When you deploy for a mission from the Helicopter ACC, you can 'Commence Mission,' 'Select Equipment,' 'Select Buddy', 'Select Vehicle' and 'Select Character'.

Choose 'Select Character' and change your character to the one immediately below Snake, which should have your avatar name.

To customise your avatar, while you're waiting in the chopper, take out the iDroid and go to the 'Mother Base' tab, and choose 'Customise'. You should have Avatar at the bottom.

I'll post pics and specifications for Solid Snake tonight! Just takes a bit of tweaking face wise :)

I think that's a valid analysis/criticism.

But remember that if he didn't go that hard, if he wasn't so all-or-nothing, we probably wouldn't have any of the MGS games we know and love. Not in the same shape/form at least. His conviction and commitment to a singular approach is what made them all great, from the very first.

But why do you hate yourself? Venom is you. You is Venom
But Venom is Big Boss too. So we are Big Boss?

Awesome thanks for that! Looking forward to seeing how to make snake!

I completely disagree with this.
