and that second top comment--are you fucking kidding me.

Explain this, Left.

What kind of legislation would have prevented this? An all out gun ban?

We will need more details to say for sure. But based on pretty much all data available stricter gun control would reduce the number of incidents of gun violence in totality.

Could this case in particular have been thwarted with better gun control? Possibly. But it certainly wouldn't of made it any easier to carry out this act.

i assume you're being sarcastic.

if not, those people are trained professionals whose job it is to handle weaponry to protect the president and undergo a barrage of psych and fitness tests to make sure they are the best choice for the job. they aren't joe sixpack off the street who wants a 9mm because he thinks it looks cool, and then leaves it somewhere for his emotionally troubled son to take and shoot up a high school with.

I live on a ranch in a very remote area of Montana. At the moment we have a pack of wolves who have set up just over the back ridge. At this time of year they're generally not a problem but when winter sets in and the food supply runs low they start coming down looking for a meal. Last year we had to get a pack relocated during their breeding season after they set up a den and began attacking the horses. That cost me several thousand and my daughter was left devastated after her horse was killed during one attack. Apart from the wolves we also get bears and coyotes coming down from time to time. Now I'll be more than happy to give up my shotgun and hunting rifles, if the people who want a total ban on all guns are willing to go out there and protect my property from these predators.

You get around, you were living in the UK when talking about guns here:

whats wrong with having background checks, even medical history for last 5-10 years? I need to be checked out physically before I enter college/grad school. Why not when I get a gun?

Gun laws are a state by state basis right? Is there a comparative analysis between states with stricter gun laws (and what that entails) vs. states with less regulation and how this relates to firearm related deaths?

I'm wth Obeezy on this one, time to stop fucking around while people are dying and this is the perfect time to talk about it. I too am pissed

Fuck it! Face it, if we can't get a legislation passed after 20 kindergarteners are massacred...

What the fuck is wrong with people god damn this shit
and yet people would rather sit on their asses and rabble about how obama is the kenyan hitler or some shit
lucky them that it wasnt their goddamn kindergartender, zero empathy for others. Only 'fuck you ive got mine.'

Just like the Liberals to concoct a Mass Shooting to take the heat off of Planned Parenthood.

I'm like 85% sure this is a joke right?

Obama's like America's disappointed father.

Well America earned it.

Yes. sort of.

For reference my state(Louisiana) has more gun violence then Mexico.

States with stricter gun laws tend to have lower rates of gun violence. Same applies to countries. We have a notably higher gun violence rate then any other western developed, highly functioning nation.

Last things first:

You may be interested to know that I don't own, have never own, and do not plan to own a gun.

You may be interested to read the rest of that line instead of stopping where you did, where I make clear that "people like you" isn't a reference to gun owners, it's a reference to people who willfully ignore the influence of NRA and lobbyists for reasons. You know, people like you.

Yes, I admit I was keen to gloss over evidence that did not provide an answer to the question I raised.

Keen to gloss over evidence showing that, even now, most people support moderate gun control laws. Given that, given the lack of action from Congress, and given the documented money trail of the NRA into Congress, your question has been answered more than once already.

Are you so bent out of shape that you can't just respond to the actual content of my messages, that you must presuppose I hold a certain view? I never said what I thought was the "rational" explanation, I asked for proof that Congress is being bought off by gun lobbyists and as of yet you've given me none.

"Oh, but come on, what other explanation could there be? Why else are they not responding to the problem?"

I didn't ask for the likelihood of the theory, I asked if there was evidence to prove it.

If you don't like what I'm telling you, you're free to check out Vertigo's link too -- he's posted it twice for you to ignore.

I mean, really, what is your take on the situation: that the NRA doesn't influence Congress? That gun lobbyists don't funnel cash into politicians to get them from working on gun control? That Congress, for absolutely no reason, least of all money, is just willfully ignoring the bipartisan majority support of gun control among their constituents?

I'll bet you think the cable lobby has nothing to do with Republicans' opposition to net neutrality too. Just a big ol' coincidence!

I mean this is great and all, but he's the goddamn president. He has (or at least had) power, but he's acting like some pissed grandpa at the dinner table.

he tried after newton and the shit failed because of congress, and that's when dems had the senate. he's said over and over not passing better gun legislation is the one regret of his presidency, unsurprisingly he's pissed.

He's not a king. or a dictator. And he's not a prime minister, either.

He't not a legislator and can't create/pass policy.

He needs Congress to instate real change. Have you looked at Congress recently? Did you take civics?

Given the number of "why doesn't do Obama just do something about this!" posts, it's little surprise that turnout during mid-term elections is so poor.

Yes. I think there's a 'I elected the President four years ago, why didn't he fix everything?!' attitude that slows the pace of reform. You need to vote every election.

His job is to run the country following the existing laws, not make new ones or change existing ones. That's congress's job. If the President wants to change something (like gun control, for example), his job literally is to tell congress that they should change the law. But of course, congress will have none of that.

One of the best if not the best Presidents this country has and probably will ever have in our country's current condition.

I used to be disappointed in Obama because he didn't live up to the promise of 2008.

Now I'm realizing that we are disappointing him.

He's a better president than we deserve. It pains me that such a huge proportion of the country can't find anything redeeming in this obviously intelligent, empathetic, and passionate man.

Only congress has the power to challenge the 2nd amendment. His hands are tied, congress gives zero fucks about mass shootings.

Right.

The president gets told "Okay, we're spending $X on health care, our coverage is below other countries by Y%, and we have K shootings this year, in commparison, honduras had J, Canada L, Japan M, the UK N, Australia O...."

And based on this information, he goes to congress and says "Hey, our day to day operations are telling us that America has to address these areas. Please address them. And here are some suggestions that our experts say will help improve things. Please take those into consideration when drafting policy. Kthxbye <3"

Can we like all agree yet that angry white men in our own country are more a threat to us than any perceived foreign threat? I mean Christ look at this.

LOL that list is nearly the exact opposite of this list.

and congress says "fuck you planned parenthood tho"

Especially if you KNOW an angry white man.

Statistically if you die or are injured in a mass shooting, you know the shooter and he is an angry white man.

So if you know any white men, you should profile them just to be safe.

Except he doesn't, that resides with the dipshits in congress would rather waste everyone's time and money with Benghazi, ObamaCare repeal 100 (cause the previous 99x didn't work, and planned parenthood.

We have a notably higher gun violence rate then any other western developed, highly functioning nation.

Notably higher doesn't do the gap justice, I think.

If you take the top 10 first world countries, we have more mass shootings in a single month (on average in 2015) than the other 9 have combined in 15 years.

oh no, i know like, seven, white men. should i start wearing body armor to be safe?
