Transformers: Devastation |OT| Rising in Disguise

Got maybe an hour in. This game is soooo fun. Keeps pulling surprises out of nowhere. I was sold on it at E3, but it's fun to see the game slowly open up with the Borderlands-esque weapon drops. Was not expecting that.

Doesnt seem like most people in the thread have it yet, but for those that do or will soon-- anyone have an idea how to use the grappling hook? I noticed it slows your descent if you pull it out in midair, but it doesn't seem to do anything to buildings or enemies alike.

I truly couldn't care less about Transformers, but this game looks awesome and Platinum rules, so I think I'm picking it up.

Now... which system?

Steam traders are offering it for $40-45, Amazon.de is offering a retail PC copy for EUR 20 BUT that one releases in November.
PS4/X1 versions can be haggled for cheap by trading in games you own at your local shop :V

Why? Surely Activision would have faith in this right? It's a badass game

Character action games generally don't review well.

Reviewers generally don't have the skill or knowledge required to accurately review this genre. A good example used yesterday was DMC is the best-reviewed game in that series despite being one of the worst from a gameplay perspective.

Are ypou talking about DMC1 or DmC 2013? Cuz they're not THAT bad :X

It is odd to say, but hearing even just Scrapper using his G1 voice to taunt Prime or Megatron telling the Autobots to die is hitting all the right buttons.

Yeah, that wouldn't work out very well at all, would it?

A Platinum take on original TMNT would be insane, especially if they contemplate keeping the 2.5D platforming style. Or even if not, they'd still do a kickass job of it, as it seems they've done with TD.

I want a TMNT Platinum game so bad. Just not in the cheesy Nickelodeon branding and style, but more in the gritty yet colorful comic book style.

I mean, DMC is by far the best game in the series, and that's coming from someone who loves 3 and 4 to death, so that's a pretty bad example imo :P

As this is my favorite genre, I'll probably buy this when it unlocks on Steam. It doesn't seem like a complete trainwreck, does it?

Ninja Gaiden
Devil May Cry
Bayonetta 1&2
God of War 1&2

Some of the most well known, and they also happened to be critic favorites. Also, it kind of doesn't matter if DMC was the "best reviewed" considering how many more reviewers there are now than there were a decade ago. Reviews tend to be less skewed in many cases now simply due to the average. It also helps that DMC's actual gameplay wasn't horribly bad either, despite it being reviled as much as the Mass Effect 3 endings.

A better and possibly more relevant example would be The Wonderful 101 which got some rather mixed reviews but just a brief read though the OT here and you'll see countless glowing impressions and some super awesome breakdowns of the game's finer mechanics. My favourite game of 2013 by a margin and Rising came out that year also.

W101 plays very differently than any other character action game, and is pretty hard, expecting the player to pay attention and adapt very quickly.

This doesn't appear to be as unique and is more similar to rising/bayonetta. That makes it more pick up and play, which reduces that learning barrier reviewers hate.

Well, generally speaking good games will get good reviews, but generally speaking I think reviewers have less time to pour into gitting gud than many enthusiests so like grief says they're much more impressed by spectacle. If you dig into a lot of reviews for Bayo or DMC (or even God of War, which to be perfectly honest I still haven't played) you'll find a lot of talk about how impressive this thing was, or the music, or the graphics here - all of which is perfectly true.

But that's not what a lot of us are here for. Like, even on Giant Bomb which had a fair number of its staff praising Bayo 2 pretty heavily, if you were listening to their talk about it they weren't the type to be playing it over and over and over - mostly they were a once-through-the-story-and-that's-it kind of play. Which is fine, there's nothing wrong with that, of course, but as someone who put probably at least 300 hours into Bayo 1, you know they didn't stick with it long enough to suss out the intricacies of the controls, or the response times, or how your options vary in a battle or whatever.

Generally for reasons of time reviewers favour accessibility, spectacle, and a core gameplay loop that keeps them going until they consider themselves 'finished' - and being reviewers, they often have a lot less time to stick to any one game at a time.

I agree with this poster.

(I've got this game sitting at my house right now, going to dive in when i get home)

Just bought it on Steam.

Generally don't preorder games but thanks to Steam's return policy doesn't really matter now.

Didn't enjoy Bayo/Bayo 2 that much but loved MGR and TW101 so will be interesting to see how I'll like this one.

Rising in Disguise! Really? That sounds very, very promising.

PSN doesn't have a digital version.
Had to argue with the dude at Gamestop to sell me a sealed copy.

The people who made the game deserves the money not Gamestop

The people who made the game hardly get any money from the sale anyway though. The money goes to Activision and quite likely Platinum has already at least majority of their money.

Fuck this game feels like someone plundered my childhood.
And adulthood.

I cant believe we have this game now. It truly is a new golden age.

Have you actually watched the Nickelodeon cartoon? I've actually quite enjoyed every season thus far, and this is coming from a fan of the OG cartoon from the 90's.

I think even a Platinum-made TMNT with the Nick artstyle could be awesome. It certainly would be leagues better than the games they've put out thus far.

The nick version is my all time favorite tmnt fiction and this is coming from someone who enjoyed the 87 and 03 version. I agree a platinum nick tmnt would rock

Was the original cartoon in 87? Damn, I thought early 90's for some reason. 'Dat old age brain.

Everything I see about TF:D has me marking so hard... Dammit, I think I'm going to cave.

Interesting, I haven't watched the most reason iteration of it on Nick but I'll check it out. I just remember a few years ago it was hella cheesy in art style and tone.

The best TMNT is the current IDW comic series. It marries goofy and grim perfectly.

But this is a Transformers thread dammit. Shellheads get out!
