Is it common to make big multi-topping sandwiches in the US?

So this thread made me wonder, you obviously don't eat those sandwiches as breakfast, but what do Americans eat for breakfast then?

Butter and cheese sandwich for breakfast?

Why bother even getting out of bed for such a sad meal?

egg and cheese sandwich (with meat sometimes), bagel w/ cream cheese, cereal, or nothing

butter and cheese though.... I can't wait to have a laugh with my mates in my flat abut that one

It's baffling that people find this weird. Good, well-made bread tastes good even with just butter on it, or with nothing on to munch as a side dish. You then put some delicious cheese on it. This tastes amazing. Is your cheese so horrible that you have to combine it with 10 other things to make the taste disappear?

That's before you grill it right? You don't just eat it like that do you?

so.....

...wait...

....you put cheese on your toast?

I just had to get up from the sofa and walk up to my keyboard and type this. I'm from the cold north and what is this crap.

No, you don't grill that.

You take some yummy freshly baked bread, butter it nicely and then take your awesome (not that american shit you call "cheese") cheese and cut a few slices. That's a normal sandwich for you.

You know there's a fuckton of great cheeses other than "grilled".

OP, since you think that cheese on a bread thing is normal, does this seem like a lot of toppings to you?

Jg0RhhY.jpg

That's going the extra mile if you ask me if I just want a quick snack.

OP I can't stop laughing at this butter and cheese meal you so happily eat. Do you have a gofundme link I can donate to? Geezuz..

It's not a meal? It's a snack. Here in Europe we actually eat normal food, not just some big-ass sandwiches.

I eat bread with butter on it when, day, served along side pasta or eat bread and sliced cheese along with soppressata, but never cheese and butter

Because the picture you posted looks like my reaction to Metroid Prime Federation Force.

Are you so dense that you think American cheese is the only option in America? rofl

No, we just have better taste than you. Turkey and cheese will always be better than butter and cheese.

In Finland we pretty much eat sandwiches the same way swedes do, just more like simple little snacks but after browsing through this thread it's made me really hungry for some murican style sandwiches, they look delicious.

The monte cristo crosses a line for me. Well, maybe if it was smallish.

Because for the longest time it was true. It only has been in recent decades that we've shaken that off. Same goes for beer.

True. The day I discovered provolone and asiago were heavenly events.

Im american and I love me some Butter and Cheese.
Yep. Butter...and...

can't keep it. OP I have been laughing at your picture in my office for the last 5 minutes. I've had to wipe tears from my face because of this. Thank you so much.

I'm open to the idea of just bread, cold cheese, and butter being really good together. It's just the image you posted did not look appealing at all.

Look, dude.

You put up a picture of bread and some cheese and called it a sandwich.

You know what we would call what you posted in the US?

Some bread, with butter and cheese.

Nothing wrong with that.

But a sandwich it ain't, my friend.

lol read some of my posts following that in the thread. I'm well aware of good cheeses :) a piece of bread and a piece of cheese just isn't a "sandwich" ...sorry

It's a limpsmörgås. Granted it's not amazing bread by any means (it has sugar and is more of a kids' bread), but it still tastes good. Sorry I couldn't find a studio photo of a limpsmörgås.

You always put butter at the bottom to make the sandwich more deliciously moist and salty. That's just what a sandwich is over here. Bread, butter and some kind of topping (could be cheese, turkey sure, ham, etc). I know many southern Europeans don't use butter in this way either though.

I concede this point, it's a horrible photo if you don't know how it tastes.

The semantics discussion is not very relevant. We have a word for these things and it doesn't really translate into anything other than "sandwiches". You don't eat bread this way so there's not other word I can use.

Gross

I'll take some lettuce, green peppers, maybe some onions or something on my turkey and cheese instead of butter. Why would I want a soggy, salty sandwich?

I generally don't eat breakfast, but I bought some pumpkin bread this weekend at an apple orchard so I've had a slice of that each day. Pumpkin bread is not a typical bread, it's more of a baked good... like a sweet bakery item. Typically I skip breakfast and eat lunch and dinner. Lunch, for me, is a ~12PM meal, usually smaller in size to dinner.

If I have a lot of time, on the weekends or if we have friends staying over, we'll go out for breakfast. This local diner (a small restaurant that typically specializes in greasy breakfast & lunch on the cheap) has this sandwich called "The Hobo Breakfast Sandwich," which is a bulky roll (a large bread roll typically not served during breakfast), cornbeef hash, a fried egg, 2 slices of swiss cheese, all cobbled together. Usually served with some breakfast potatoes and a side of bacon. It's fucking amazing. Wish I had a photo of it. Only eat that once every 6 months maybe.

Sure we do.

One of the most popular things at parties is a tray with various cheeses with crackers and bits of bread.

Cheese served on bits of cracker and bread is also a thing. It's just an hors d'oeuvres.

It's not semantics.

This is one of the greatest threads of the year. That butter and cheese sandwich. LOL. I cannot stop laughing.

Makes me feel sorry for the Euros that don't get to experience quality American sandwiches.

What kind of butter do you use if it results in a soggy sandwich?

If butter makes your bread soggy than you have left it out in the sun for too long. Bread is already salty so the butter just adds that little extra.

So what exactly were you looking to discuss with this thread?

"Are sandwiches the same in the U.S.? And by sandwiches I mean limpsmörgås which aren't sandwiches?"
