Fuck it, can't be bothered waiting on the console DLC fix, so I'm just going to start a NG for my death march playthrough/trophy and I'll do the DLC when I hit 30.

Is it even possible to beat the first boss without igni/some sort of fire? I saw no openings to actually hit him with melee.

I defeated him by attacking his flank/cheeks. Get one or two hits in, retreat. Meanwhile dance your way around his poison bursts, stay clear of his front (tongue attack) and you should be good. You can use thunderbolt/blizzard + cursed oil as well. Didn't really use any signs save for the occasional quen safeguard (I have no points in quen skills). Avoiding tongue is key though as it hits through quen.

Man, that first boss on DM is just a straight fuck you to anyone that's a swordsman build.

I'd like to think its a fuck you to those who thought ''whirl'' makes the combat encounters much easier. :p

Despite having some flaws, I feel some sense of pride making the OT. In fact, I might be willing to do the OT for Blood and Wine as well. :)

Its been so long since I'd played that I've completely forgot how to play. I think they waited too long for a expansion.

I didn't know the tongue was such a danger until I read this thread, but that might be because I was too distracted seeking the poison gas to regenerate my health.

You playing on DM? If so, what level?
Unless I had him frozen with NW I could not get in close enough without him jumping on me or jumping away. Even then my lvl 33 melee attacks werent doing much to him. Ended up just plinking away at it with igni/bombs for 10minutes

Pfft... Whirl is more fun than effective. Those Sign users are the ones that need to be humbled.

Hm, the advice you guys gave is making me think my game is bugged. I'm watching someone stream on twitch, and on the first boss he's using Quen and it's working. On the first boss and the part immediately after it, my normal Quen wasn't working, only the Alt version. I thought maybe it was a mechanic of the fight, or a DM thing, because my Quen shield gets instant destroyed and absorbs no damage. I have it upgraded too.

spoilers for final quest in hearts of stone

wtf do I do when I get to the end of the area and there are several mirror that shatter upon approaching? I have ran out of time like 4 times and its almost to the point where I dont even care to finish anymore. Is there one that is really well hidden or something? Ive been walking around the area several times and dont see any others to shatter

Edit: nvm, found a video guide. That was fucking stupid

One of the skills was bugged for me for a battle (the one that lets you use adrenaline to cast signs), and I had to remove it afterwards and put it back again to make it work like it should. Never happened before the expansion.

I am really wondering whether i should start the expansion in my original save, or my new game + save...

What kind of level is recommended to start the expandion on new game +?

Here:
Q: What's the recommended level to play Hearts of Stone?

A: Level 30+ for NG and Level 60+ for NG+

It doesn't hurt to read the OP's F.A.Q, you know

Lvl. 60 is suggested. I just reloaded my old Death March save prior to new game + to check out the new content as my new game+ save is only at level 46.

So many good Witcher 1 callbacks

-the Golem from the swamps reconstructed
-you can buy the Professor's glasses and wear them, and you see Geralt with glasses on the cutscenes.
-the banker Vivaldi appears and helps you.

Played for a couple hours today and HoS has reignited my passion for this game.

The extension to the world north of Novigrad looks amazing! Varied and beautiful, yet still very natural in comparison to its surroundings.

I've gotten as far as
meeting Olgierd von Everec with the Man of Glass, and just learning about the 3 tasks he wants Geralt to complete
. I found the first boss challenging, but was able to beat it on the first try. The second boss took me a lot longer, I didn't know you could re-equip your gear, but I still beat him relatively quickly.

So far I'm loving the expansion, it truly feels like CDPR have expanded the world in every possible way. Looking forward to completing it!

It works somewhat for this expansion, but I feel it is a design flaw for NG+ or people just starting the game for the first time from now on to have the new gear upgrades and runes locked away in the most dangerous area of the game and with such gold requirements. I would have liked if there was some incentive for new players to discover it and use it during the previous 90% of the game.

Whoa, this is amazing. I've been enjoying the DLC a lot so far. I wasn't sure if I'd really enjoy going back to this game after so long, but I really do. A few notes/questions.

- Is the runewright worth it? I've got a bit over 35 000 crowns, sure, but this man asks for hell of a lot of money. Does it pay of?
- After a few hours I've only encountered a small amount of new Gwent cards (three cards all sold by the same man, iirc). There have been very few new opponents so far. Was expecting more.
- The talent tree feels so worthless for a level 35+ character. I've got points to spend but nothing to spend them on.
- I really like the story so far and a few characters have been especially great, but the Wild Ones are strange. (Early story spoilers):
They're a gang of noblemen and they first appear to be rather soft and cheery, but before too long they appear to be rather brutal and fierce. It's just strange and don't quite add up.
- Shani is a really loveable character. I've never played the first Witcher game, and thus haven't seen her before. Wasn't even sure if Geralt could love a woman that's not a sorceress. It's a love interest that don't really make sense in connection to the main story, but as a stand-alone expansion it works well.

What fix?

Man, that first boss on DM is just a straight fuck you to anyone that's a swordsman build.

Actually, I found it to be pretty easy. I threw a bomb that creates a field of fire (I forget its name) that I've upgraded to superior. This bomb locks it in place. Next I can just button-mash it and deal massive damage thanks to my feline gear and red mutagens. When the effects of the bomb wore off, I dodged away and threw another bomb. The boss was quickly defeated.

I haven't really had as much trouble with the bosses as you guys in this thread. The second boss did get me once, but I also didn't know that you could re-equip your gear and still managed to defeat the boss pretty easily once I learned to dodge the hell away from his attacks.

this group also yell : what a lovely day

and

I live, I die, and I live again.

So I didn't know about the gwent cards being redeemable for those who purchased digitally until today. I managed to go to the site and enter my info and proof of purchase but does anyone know how the supply is holding up? It sounded like they were expecting to be out of cards pretty quick. I think I heard the site was down and then came back up today, not sure if that means they got more in stock or not though.

I really wish they'd sell Gwent decks on their own. They could make a decent chunk of cash and it would keep us from having to deal with scalpers.

DLC items get deleted when you start NG+ with patch 1.10. Only on consoles, it's fixed now on PC.

They do. Well, the Monsters and Scoia'Tael deck at least. The details are in the OT. You can buy Hearts of Stone physical in stores, and it comes with those two decks.

taker was an awesome boss. That was the first real challenging boss for me ,the one that came after it was even more difficult.

Hmm.. my bombs must be bugged because that was not my experience at all. I used Superior Dancing Star that would cause the burn stun but it never stopped him from continuing to jump stomp or just jump away entirely when I was near him.

-I still have to see the third tier, but the first two aren't worth it.

-Really? I thought from the first scene they were a bunch of thugs.

About the missing herbalist side quest -
Really didn't expect it to just end like that. Thought for sure the old couple were up to something. Not like Geralt to take the word of some shifty people and not go looking for confirmation.

Edit: Damn, I've missed something haven't I...

OKAY. CDProjekt Red, you guys are pretty good. The guy who stops you in Oxenfurt
who is basically a tax collected asking if you had partook in any of the early easy cash exploits like selling cow hides or pearls.
was pretty fucking funny.

At first I was just sitting here like "Who is this? Fuck off." Then I really started paying attention and that turned to "oh... OOOH"

yeah you can investigate further. should have looked around a bit more.

Did random enemies get a huge buff or something? Getting battered by a gang of drowners is not something I'm used to

LMFAO! CDPR's going in with the meme's/references.

"Shit just got serious."

"Witness me, brothers!"

I kinda want the woman who keeps calling Geralt "Puss Peepers."

Shani (after years of retconning the best romance in series)

probably buried somewhere in this thread, but is this a play on words for hearthstone, considering the gwent aspect?

I found the first boss ridiculously easy lol.

Threw some dancing stars in his face and then ran in and did a whirl attack took out like half his HP immediately. I guess it helps that I'm level 36 and have full mastercrafted wolf school gear rocking. Honestly the standard enemies are kicking my ass way more >>

Surprised people had trouble with the first boss. I just used Igni in his face and it's super effective. Though I'm level 34, so that might have helped.
The first two boss fights were very good. Also, Shani looks so cute. It's off to a good start!

I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't expect fire to help at all after what was said during the course of the story leading up to the fight. I still beat him after putting on a dodge-a-thon for a solid 6 minutes on Death March though. Fun stuff, really enjoying the increased difficulty so far.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I thought the first boss was pretty fucking shit:
It in no way compliments the game systems. You're told it's generally resistant to fire, only that's bullshit and instead repeated flamethrower to the face works wonders. There's no prepare time, so there's no sense of Witchery preparation with oils and equipment, it's just right into the fray willy nilly. And it's moveset is so fast that it can jump up and stun slam after you've already activated a quick dash in, which gives you zero window to counter or return. It's basically the textbook half arsed boss fight in my opinion, where my win (ultimately through flanking with flamethrower) feels more like I cheapened the game mechanics and cheesed it rather than had an actual fight. Just that shitty combination of frustrating and boring.
