Canadian General Election (OT) - #elxn42: October 19, 2015

It probably hasn't been brought up because no one can change it -- if the dollar continues to slide, imported goods will either keep rising in price or offer less value (i.e. sizes are going to start shrinking). I don't think anyone wants to campaign on reducing grocery bills when they know it wouldn't happen.

Well I would agree, but there's a problem with that argument. Our dollar wasn't particularly strong back in the Chretien/Martin days, but the price of groceries was lower than it was when the dollar was strong under Harper.

The price of groceries is just ridiculous now.

I'd be on board for Liberal majority, as long as they don't screw it up. The last thing we need is some stupid scandal bringing in a Harper Jr for another decade.

Sizes have already started shrinking on some products. I'm not sure how much the rest of you pay attention to what you buy in grocery stores but I've noticed several packaged goods with new Canadian SKUs that have smaller amounts of stuff in it.

I've also watched as grocery stores like Loblaws pretend items are on sale (at the normal price) just before jacking prices up to new highs.

FWIW if you want cheaper groceries, at least when the season is right, try to find a local farmer that will deliver fresh produce. Also get used to eating more locally grown winter veggies in the winter.

Edit: holy crap in that link meat has gotten waaaay more expensive. You should all just stop eating meat! ;)

This has driven me out of packaged foods and into bulk, wherever I can. At least there, I can see the price change easily rather than them pull some shady repackaging.

My favourite milk brand shrunk their bags from 1.3L per bag to 1. DID YOU THINK WE WOULDNT NOTICE!?

Edit: my dog's name is Henry. I just opened my back door and said "Come on, Harper, in the house". I may need to take a step away from this election.

Yeah, beef is so overpriced these days, i almost want to stick to pork or fish. A not so big grocery cost like 100-120$ for me and my gf, and that's almost once a week, I can't imagine how it is with children.

I also just noticed that they have the liberal candidate at 24% in St. Albert-Edmonton and the independent at 10%. A lot of the riding polls recently released for that riding have the independent around 23% or 24% in that riding.I think their projections are being a bit to nice to some parties like the Liberals in certain regions like Quebec.

a former Bloc member now leader of Force & Democratie is splitting the souvernist vote between him and the Bloc in Avignon-LaMettis-Matane-Matapedia giving the Liberals the lead there

I am just worried they will think of this guy instead

oh gawd, so 1998-2001 towards the end of ECW and WCW when Vince McMahon eventually bought out the competition.

on a lighter note, , here is a parody of famous paintings featuring party leaders.

Haper - Marylin.

Duceppe - Van Gaugh Autoportrait

May - Girl with a Pearl Earring

Trudeau - The Blue Boy

Mulcair - The Mona Lisa

The Duceppe Autoportrait one is the best of the bunch up there while The Blue Boy for Trudeau implies that he is a Dauphin which many detractors have used the term to describe him in the past.

They also called the Alberta election less than a week before election day.

The Liberal momentum is definitely real :)

I won't believe it until I see the results come in live Tuesday morning(I'm in Korea right now, so I'll be watching intently at work :P)

You went to Korea and didn't bring me :(

Maybe instead of fear-mongering Harper should actually challenge some of Trudeau's garbage like removing our tax free savings accounts...

Oh man, imagine that policy.

"As of right now, all assets in TFSAs belong to the Canadian Government. We will use those funds to blanket the airwaves with anti-Conservative Party attack ads."

"We won't take out any youtube ads though; we're not complete monsters."

As of September, he doesn't want to remove it, he just wants to roll back the yearly contribution limit(and even that won't happen until 2016 or 2017). According to polls, only 10% of Canadians are capable of investing the full $10k:

edit: Beaten by a mile :/

You don't need to be such a prick about it, you're right I didn't check to see he is only taking away the increase rather than removing it. I screwed up, there you go.

This is probably the last place you want to be parroting CPC talking points without at least looking into them first.

Take a look at GSG's constructive response. That was helpful, now I know. Jeez

The internet is probably making me seem more bitter than I am. I'm a pretty dry person overall. I wasn't saying you're a bad person and you should feel bad, I'm just saying this thread is full of people who have been following pretty closely. The line also fell nearly in concert with the half truths and outright lies the cons have been campaigning on this last week, too.

If I made you feel bad, I'm sorry fella. Really wasn't my intention.

I totally forgot about that guy. Him and duceppe are the most likely to not have a seat on election night.

Also, I seriously hope those recent media ads hurt the conservatives and help revive the ndp also.

Awkward election talk at coffee break this morning. Someone leaning towards the Conservatives because "I'm not being racist, but I just don't want any more Muslims coming into this country."

No, I'm pretty sure that's a textbook example of being racist. :-/

Duceppe's chance has gotten better. He gets triple media coverage on TVA and Journal de Montréal.

The only thing that may block Duceppe is the riding redraw that includes more Downtown core added plus Chinatown. Not sure if it is enough though.

Did anyone call him on it or just let it hang there?

Yup, that's a racist.

Ahh, the textbook "I'm not racist but".

Had an election talk myself with a coworker from Montreal today.

He isn't voting because he's here in Korea with me(and he didn't vote special ballot like I did), which may be for the best because of how terribly misinformed he was. He bought the Conservative hook, line and sinker about the Liberals raising taxes despite him having a middle class salary. Worse yet, he supports Bill C-24, even though it makes him a 2nd class citizen because he's a Chinese immigrant :/

Somehow the Conservatives have convinced him that the Chretien/Martin governments handled the economy worse than Harper's government did :S

Haven't had much election talk at my office (I'm in healthcare) but I imagine there are very few Conservative voters. Most of my colleagues are women in their 40's.

And he's a federal law enforcement officer?

1. Conservative Party running ads saying Justin Trudeau will lead to "establishment of neighbourhood brothels." http://t.co/Y7ITCMqlo1
2. These ads, which are running only in Mandarin and Punjabi newspapers, also say Liberals also support sale of marijuana to children.
3. Worth reflecting that these scare mongering ads are aimed at Chinese and South Asian immigrants, not running in English and French.
4. What's the implicit message of running these ads in Chinese & Punjabi? That immigrants are fools who will buy into these crappy arguments
5. Last point can't be emphasized enough: the Conservative Party thinks immigrants are fools who will buy arguments "old stock" won't

I've been long past the point now where I have no longer any problem saying that Harper has been running the most blatantly racist campaign in Canadian history.

I find that hard to believe. I have to imagine Chinese immigrants had a pretty rough go in some very early election campaigns.

There's a very widespread misconception that muslims are somehow "invading" Canada. People think they represent 20% of the population, when it's in fact... 2%. This ignorance makes it even easier for politicians to manipulate people and make them fear a threat that doesn't exist...

OK, then maybe since the 1940s.

I can buy that. I don't want to jinx it, but I really don't think you could write a better ending to the Harper disaster than for him to be beaten by a Trudeau. My only hope is that one of Harper's kids gets into politics and we get a rematch in 30 years.

Trudeau is in good hands if he keeps Goodale on Finance.

Ralph also is a likable guy.

All this talk about Liberals being bad with the economy is nonsensical

I'm curious to know his response.

Awkward silence, then tried to pivot to talk specifically about Syrian refugees, need to be vetted because some of them might be terrorists, and besides, they'd end up on welfare, need to ensure we only get the "right" kind of immigration, people who will contribute, etc.

And the cherry on top is that he's an immigrant himself, from Central America.

But this is the big, gigantic, destructive problem with politics. People taking talking points at face value, without actually checking if they're true or not.
