Is it just me or is there precious little hype for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate?

Considering Unity really pissed people off and Rouge (despite it being more of AC Black Flag) only came out on PS3/360, many people are kinda 'done' with the series.

That isn't a bad thing at all, as this puts pressure on Ubisoft to really kill it with AC Syndicate, but at the same time, it does send the message that "Yay, we are all kinda done with Assassins Creed, so....yah, make sure this new one is at least decent and not bug ridden".

I might not be the best person to say this, as I only really tried out ACII and had some fun with that, but this is an issue with yearly franchises. People get sick of the same thing every year and while the AC series does quite a bit for each game to stand out from past installments (unlike the yearly sports games or at times Call of Duty), they still play like each other.

Hopefully like the stronger titles in the series like ACII, AC Brotherhood and Black Flag, Syndicate does a lot of new things, pulls them all off well and that the series gets a mark of quality again.

Honestly thought that after Black Flag's critical success, they would be trying to have that be the AC 'Template' going forward but due to the development system they have going, the Unity team had to go with what they were doing despite how successful Black Flag was.

Wouldn't be surprised if Rouge was made (from its cobbled together AC Black Flag Assets) to appease people wanting more Black Flag. This type of system created issues in the past, with ACIII having a number of issues that past games did not have and it also worked out well for Black Flag (as people love the ship portions of that game, so they expanded on that element).

It's that fucking hood - I'm gonna complain about it in every assassin's Creed thread. It only made sense in the crusades but it has become some end all be all trademark of the assassin's which is fucking stupid; a secret assassination organization which have had the same tell for 800 years... Erm okay great subterfuge.. Twats, it doesn't make sense in its own universe - be rid of it and I would play.

When was the last time there was a hype for an AC game? GAF has been saying it's stale since Brotherhood.

I think it'll still sell well. I'm sure gonna buy it if reviews confirm it to be bug free (more or less).

If you mean it's the obvious match every 1st grader can think of then yes but ninjas do not make a great game all of a sudden.

China during the opium wars would be a great setting that's rarely been used to boot and it would fit into the timeline.
Never said it did. But besides Mark of the Ninja, there are very few stealth-based ninja titles. And especially ninjas during the actual historical time periods

Ninjas were essentially history's Agent 47s, using disguises and special tools to get close to their targets

Turns out my former roommate's brother supposedly got a copy early.

All I heard was that it runs like Unity, looks worse, streets are barren and lacking the NPC's from Unity, and the story is, and I quote, "impossible to understand."

So, maybe the lack of hype is justified if he's telling the truth?

EDIT: He also said "pop in is terrible entire crowds and carriages show up 4 feet ahead of you"

EDIT 2: It should be noted his brother is 16 and 4 hours away so it's entirely possible he's lying.

Though I'm a fan of the series still, Ubisoft has been doing too much with over-hyping their franchises for quite some time which only leads to disappointment and backlash. Dial back the marketing and let the game speak for itself.

They should have made an AC game set during World War 1 or 2.

Assassinating Hitler would definitely have been something new and exciting.
Nah, too modern for AC. Going back to places that existed like 500 years ago is what makes the franchise so exciting and special. Also, play Sniper Elite if you want to assassinate Hitler.

And wait, this game comes out next week? Wow, had no idea.

Yeah, not going to say that's accurate at all. Lol

I am really interested to see how it reviews. Victorian London is one of my favorite settings for games, films, books... anything really. If the game isn't a massive bugfest like Unity I could see myself picking it up down the line when it goes on sale just to explore the city and play through the story. Like many people here, I have zero interest in checking the 500,000 boxes Ubisoft always puts into their game worlds.

and how is Ubisoft supposed to shoehorn a white sassy tween that doesn't wanna follow rules into the setting?

Also we know very little about actual Ninjas and Ubisoft doesn't do stealth particularly well. Sure it would be interesting if you got to interact with Hanzo and Sasuke but I'd still say China would be a more interesting setting.

I think that when Unity's debacle happened, Syndicate was mostly finished so they didn't have the time to turn the series into something fresh.

"Boss, people don't like this type of game anymore, what are we going to do with our two years of work?"

Most people just got so burned by all the shit that happened with Unity they refuse to buy in unless they hear otherwise.

Correction: Besides Mark of the Ninja there is NO stealth-based ninja game atm.
I'd rather have a kickstarter based Tenchu Remake than Ubi touching this era.
As someone posted before Ninjas won't make the shitty gameplay any better.

I think it has to do with the location. Two European settings back-to-back with not a whole lot to differentiate them mechanically.

I can see them finally tackling Asia next year in order to revitalize the series.

I enjoyed Black Flag, and probably would have enjoyed Rogue as well, but wasn't interested in picking up a last gen version. Overall though, annual releases are too much, and they haven't done nearly enough to move the gameplay forward over the years. After Unity, which was such a disaster that despite owning it, I have never even bothered to play it, I think I am pretty much done with Assassin's Creed.

Unity really did more damage to the franchise than I think Ubi expected.

It was a total shit show and when you've already got elements of yearly release fatigue slipping in more and more that's a mistake you really can't afford to make. I've picked up every AC day 1 but this one I think I'll be waiting a few months to see reviews/impressions.

I just recently bought Assassin's Creed: Rogue on PS3 for like 13 bucks and as someone who didn't play ACIV after being scorned by AC3, I'm really quite fond of it and all the boat/pirate stuff.

That being said, I'll never buy an AC game on Day One since they come down in price often very quickly by the end of the year. I passed on AC: Unity, but I'm actually quite interested in AC: Syndicate, mainly because of the female assassin. I sorta wish they'd just made her the main character and not split it between her and her brother. Can't wait to see what a mess/glitch-fest this one is!

Good.

This series needs to die. Same with Far Cry.

Thank you Ubisoft for completely ruining two franchises I was really into and that you could have made really special, but instead you milk it or didnt really put any effort into making them better.

It looks so boring. Basically it's unity 2.0. They really need to start diversifying their locations. Who tf wants to play in England during the 1800s or whatever the year range is?

There are many problems I see with Syndicate and the series at this point in time.

You've got to deal with series fatigue first and foremost and when this was setting in after AC3 what really revitalized the series was something very different in AC4, if AC4 had been Unity or something similar I think it wouldn't have gotten nearly as much press or interest as it did. After Black Flag though we had an odd year with two different games, you had Rogue which was more of BF which really had no worn out its welcome yet (because BF was just THAT good) and you had Unity... Unity wasn't good... at all. It was a buggy mess, a clearly unfinished game that was released just for the holidays when it clearly needed at least another 2 months to really be finished. That wasn't just it though, if it had just been a more graphically advanced BF or something really new I think people still would have thought of it positively but thats the thing it wasn't something like BF or something new, it was something old, something we were already tired of. Then you had in the stupid treasure chests you couldn't open without a stupid ass mobile app, microtransactions, season pass BS that they had to give to everyone for free because the game was so broken, and it general it just left a very bad taste in everyones mouths...

Fast forward to now and Syndicate and this just looks like more of the same, more of Unity and the older games which we were already tired of after AC3. It doesn't help that the setting has been done to death (not so much in games but in TV shows, movies, ect) and the main characters are pretty generic okay well the male character is (who I can't even remember his name) but Evie seemed at least different then the typical AC lead but her storyline involves searching for yet another piece of Eden which is just a repeated plot device from almost every AC game at this point.

So I'm not surpised Syndicate doesn't have a lot of hype and after hearing about the game likely being very broken at launch yet again, and the series is going to continue to do shit like season passes and microtransactions after last year I don't even want to touch it. Fuck Ubisoft if there is a single series that needs to go away and take some time to properly create a new and interesting experience its Assassin's Creed and the yearly game crap Ubisoft is trying to make it out to be is just murdering what originally started out as one of the most interest series of the last generation.

Why should there be any fucking hype for Assassins Creed: The hundreth time we rob your wallet?

I mean isn't that great?!

The game is out in less than a week and, for a big-selling series that's accustomed to sitting comfortably among other annualised holiday season juggernauts, it just seems to me like there are very few people who actually give a shit this time around. I don't want to prematurely declare that the franchise has been milked to the point that commercial interest is starting to wane significantly... but it sure does seem that way!

Is the unfinished glitch-fest that is Unity entirely to blame? Do people not dig the Victorian setting? Are we just at that point where there have been so many Assassin's Creed games now that we've reached overkill? I'm curious.
As a PC gamer I'm expecting a bug filled unoptimized mess like Unity was. I don't buy the series on day 1 anyway. But it'll still sell gangbusters to the casuals as the perfect Xmas gift to the kids.

There's nothing to the game at all. Black Flag had boats, Unity had "next gen". This has nothing without having the appeal of the Desmond arc. Peace out and rest in it, AC.

This year will be good for my wallet. I'm skipping Syndicate (because Unity just killed my passion for Assassin's Creed) and Black Ops 3 (I hated BLOPS2 and I despise their zombie modes). Plus Battlefront and Rainbow Six Siege don't have single player modes - automatic pass. I think Titanfall is the first time I've ever played a game without a single player but I don't see Battlefront or Rainbow Six interesting me enough.

Good.

This series needs to die. Same with Far Cry.

They're videogames. They don't deserve the death penalty.

What they do deserve is better treatment and some thought put into them. They need to step back, chill out with the quantity of releases and make them better. Instead of learning from mistakes they just repeat the same ones game after game.

Not a fan of the series, but I usually stay informed of when they launch. Just this past night I was messing with my Gamefly list and noticed how soon it's coming out. Gaming sites seem to be far less enthused about it than than usual.

I'm making the OT and I can't even be bothered making it look nice lol. People got burned on Unity which promised the world and instead delivered a world of glitches and shitty combat. I can't blame Ubi for being low-key in their marketing for this title.

AC has been stale for so long that other open world games have come in and taken over. MGSV plays fantastically. Batman Arkham has combat that AC can only dream of. Shadow of Mordor made assassinations more emergent and personalised.

I think the setting is actually not that bad, and also not like it's all that overused in videogames. However, as you say it is just too similar to the Paris from unity to really get me excited. Something drastically different to a European city would have been in order.

I'm with you.

This holiday my schedule is Yoshi's Wooly World, Halo 5, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tales of Zestiria. Maybe Fallout. The rest can wait for 2016 easily.

Hey friend, here's an early copy and a little bit of "spending money". You'll love the game.

...Not this year buddy. People seem to have caught on.

I really liked Unity. I am a little less hyped for this game, but after seeing the achievement spoilers and it being closer, I am starting to get excited

Series has been running on fumes for a while, and after the massive problems of last years game i think even the fumes are getting blown into the wind at this point.

Even a Watch Dogs 2 would have garnered more attention and momentum, despite the tepid reception of the first.

I got burnt out on the series after Back Flag. I also did not help that I played 2, 3, Liberation, and Black Flag in quick succession -_-. I have had enough of Ass Creed for a lifetime.

In regards to Watch Dogs 2, I would be hype as fuck for that. The first game's reception was hardly tepid (especially considering the sales).

I have it pre-ordered but won't be playing it for a while.

I'm not really, if at all excited for it. I think Unity burned a lot of people who still loved the series and put the nail in the coffin for those who were starting to hate it.

It's a shame really because Ubisoft is one of the few developers who gives us historical settings in video games, and it's mainly why I continue to play the AC games because beyond that they've gone quite stale.

This is why I don't understand the hate for AC3. When comparing the series, 2, 3 and Black Flag are the 3 that really stand out and are the most different.

I'd be sad to see this series die to be honest, but they NEED to do something different, and giving us rope launchers and brawling (horrible idea) isn't going to cut it.

I think once they finally break and build completely new assets and go to China or Japan, rebuild the combat to that era then people will jump back in, but until then this series is just going to keep dying. Also, bring back some damn ambient music ffs, it's boring exploring their worlds without it.

Bring back multiplayer as well.
