Considering Unity really pissed people off and Rouge (despite it being more of AC Black Flag) only came out on PS3/360, many people are kinda 'done' with the series.
That isn't a bad thing at all, as this puts pressure on Ubisoft to really kill it with AC Syndicate, but at the same time, it does send the message that "Yay, we are all kinda done with Assassins Creed, so....yah, make sure this new one is at least decent and not bug ridden".
I might not be the best person to say this, as I only really tried out ACII and had some fun with that, but this is an issue with yearly franchises. People get sick of the same thing every year and while the AC series does quite a bit for each game to stand out from past installments (unlike the yearly sports games or at times Call of Duty), they still play like each other.
Hopefully like the stronger titles in the series like ACII, AC Brotherhood and Black Flag, Syndicate does a lot of new things, pulls them all off well and that the series gets a mark of quality again.
Honestly thought that after Black Flag's critical success, they would be trying to have that be the AC 'Template' going forward but due to the development system they have going, the Unity team had to go with what they were doing despite how successful Black Flag was.
Wouldn't be surprised if Rouge was made (from its cobbled together AC Black Flag Assets) to appease people wanting more Black Flag. This type of system created issues in the past, with ACIII having a number of issues that past games did not have and it also worked out well for Black Flag (as people love the ship portions of that game, so they expanded on that element).
