Star Wars: The Force Awakens Final Trailer

I posted this on Facebook, but figured I would share here as well:

When I was a kid, I would go out in the back yard or out in the snow and play with my Star Wars figures (original figures that were passed down to me by my uncle). I would come up with crazy scenarios and adventures - stuff I could never imagine seeing, not even in the films, stuff that just didn't seem possible.
In the final THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer, I am seeing those dreams come to life. That's the only way I can explain why this trailer, this footage, this movie is so important and special to me. It is literally the incarnation of everything I've waited my entire life to see. Star Wars (and Empire in particular) is the sole reason that I do what I do with my life.
Star Wars is so incredibly connected to my existence.
THE FORCE AWAKENS is the film I have been waiting for my entire life.

I love this, this sums up almost perfectly how I feel too, i honestly 100% teared up during the trailer, and I know i'm gonna in the theater, this is a movie i've been waiting for my entire life too.

The bickering is strong in this thread.

Loved the trailer, looking forward to watching the movies in theaters. Will not nitpick. Will. Not. Nitpick.

We did it

We ruined a Star Wars trailer thread by arguing about nothing

came in expecting bullshit whining and arguing. leaving depressingly satisfied.

on the topic of the trailer:

I'm excited to see Boyega as his fear so far seems to be palpable and really who wouldn't be in this world when being confronted with some of this shit. very reminiscent of Luke and the beginning of his progression in the films.

Having The Raid actors won't mean the action will be good.

It's really all up to the editor and director, I suppose. I have no doubt that the Raid guys will choreograph and execute some incredible fight scenes on the set, but with Western movies it's kind of a crapshoot as to what will end up on screen. The most perfect fight scene ever can't stand up to a cut-happy editor.

Beautiful. So, so well done.

Among all the things I love about it, man, it's cool that Luke has the distinction of not being unveiled down to the very last trailer. I sense a deep respect for the character there.

i haven't been following this besides the initial teasers, and wtf the original cast is in ??
I had no idea.
Didn't really like the way the trailer was edited, but visuals are great, definitely interested.

he isn't even in the poster, i think there must be a massive plot point around him. Can't wait i'm 32 and i feel like i'm 14 again

I have the feeling his reveal will be something beautiful. Maybe they'll go down the "cool action" reveal route, but having read what JJ Abrams has said about the character and knowing his past work, I think Luke's return will be something emotionally resonate.

And then he can kick some ass.

What if Luke is the man behind the mask, finishing what his father started?

Now THAT would be emotional no?

Anyway, amazing trailer, can't wait!

Absolutely. They know he's the one person we're eager to see so they're keeping him shrouded.

If rumours are to be believed it's a shame he's not in it more but I'm not entirely believing all of the rumours. Some people on here are running round like they know everything about the film because of what they've read from Making Star Wars et al when in reality I've seen the same people been proved 'off' by various degrees following subsequent trailer reveals (not detracting from some have been proved right with other key elements)

Stop with the rumors guys.

Edit: oops

That small boy who saw the first "Star Wars" in 1980 in the cinema with his older brother, and then "Empire strikes back" and "Return of the Jedi" in 1983, is literally crying right now..

Wow...

This is the story I wanted to see, not the shitty prequels..

Two different studios. The only link is the choreographer. Unfortunately they're not fully in charge. I think we're going to see a Ronda Rousey moment where we get these cool guys but the fights are really westernized and toned down.

Yup, JJ Abrams goes out of his way to get some of the best martial artists no mainstream moviegoer has heard of in his film and to assist in the choreography, only to tone it down and westernize it.

God, this sounds like the whole "BB-8 is obviously CGI" again :D

And it's not like they are used for their "star power" to sell tickets. Average Joes and Janes won't know who they are, and they aren't made known in promo material.

FFS there's a fucking spoiler thread guys. I came into this thread to talk about the content in the trailer.

A+ trailer. If only for the fact that it really doesn't spoil much at all about the movie. Amazing restraint. I could not be more grateful for that.

On its actual merits, let me get the negatives out of the way:

- The opening shots of Rey I assume doing salvage work come off as very non-Starwarsian. Made me think of the beginning of AVATAR.
- Adam Driver's character does come off as a Vader fanboy. On one hand I'm glad that he's got a voice dealy and his character isn't relying 100% on Driver's ability or lack thereof to be menacing, but on the other hand it could come off as a little silly.
- Han's dialogue about the Dark Side and the Jedi paints an odd picture of the galaxy as it has existed since ROTJ. He seemed to be talking to both Rey (an outsider of sorts, to be fair) and Finn (a stormtrooper[?] who would have closer proximity to major events) as if these things are still abstract legends. Yeah, it can make sense what with force users being rare no matter how you slice it, but from a this-is-how-they-want-to-present-the-story perspective it comes off as odd. I'll just keep my mind open that there'll be better context.
- The zoom in on Adam Driver (I believe) aboard the ship was really jarring and gives a strange tone.
- Really, Adam Driver's goon squad had better not come off like the Sephiroth wannabes in FFVII Advent Children. Please avoid that. (good designs on them though)
- Thread reminded me that Colin Trevorrow is directing Episode 9. :(

Now the good:

- Again, there's a whole movie worth of story that all of the trailers have essentially left out. JJ and whoever else worked on the trailer have done us spoiler-free peeps right. Big applause there.
- Rey looks great. Like, I'm 100% sold on her performance already.
- Finn and Oscar Isaac also look totally solid, even though it's unclear if Isaac is getting a similar amount of screentime.
- The various planet settings look pretty phenomenal. Snow planet and wherever it was grassy and Yavin IV-like architecture-wise are both amazing.
- I'm actually semi-reassured that JJ will deliver some proper Star Wars fighter-level ship battles, very different from the style you'd find in his Star Trek films.
- That one shot of Finn looking at that red droid, despite the droid's hands looking a little goofy, looks like a true Star Wars moment of the type I've been hoping for.
- Smoke Stormtroopers erry day.
- Literally everything else that I didn't mention already is very promising.
- Had to rewatch the trailer about 4 times in the middle of writing this post. Goddamn.

We're all in agreement that, that was Luke with R2, right? I was wondering when we'd see him. Even a hand is good enough at this point.

This feels like something big, and I'm beyond excited. As a kid I used to make stop motion video with my Star Wars action figures. I grew up adoring the original trilogy. This feels good. It feels right.

I have watched the trailer several times now. It's fucking great. Make sure to watch it in high quality with good sound setup if you can. It's fairly simple to re-container Apple's MOV file into MPEG-TS, which works on the PS4 media player, using VLC. No transcoding necessary. Only downside is I can't rewind or fast-forward, just pause and play.

That is 100% Luke, that shot was in the last trailer as well and is the point where Luke is referring to himself 'having the Force'.

The whole 'Luke = Kylo' thing is ridiculous for many reasons, the biggest one being that it would incredibly stupid for Luke to spend the last trilogy resisting the dark side only to turn evil later.

We've seen that shot in some of the earlier trailers so we haven't really had a new look at him yet (in the movie atleast)

Looks like he shows up on some volcanic planet or at some kind of burning structure or something? He seems to be in the same location as kylo and a load of storm troopers anyway.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what it's like with someone as powerful as luke in a world where most people have forgotten about jedis or don't even believe they're real.

Both the original trilogy and prequels have shown main characters working with scraps and salvaged machinery (and also on desert planets), I feel it was homage to the original movies, nothing out of ordinary.

It would be a great twist though. Seeing Luke go to the dark side in the new trilogy for some reason. Doubt that Disney would do it though.

The above and the fact that the trailer doesn't make great efforts to give the entire plot away make it a great one.

I disagree. The whole point of the OT is to show Luke triumph over his anger/fear where his father failed. Undoing all of that in the sequel trilogy would be an incredibly bad idea.

Oh man. Good point. Has he not been in a single poster, or just not the poster?

I kind of want to look up what JJ has said, but I think I'm done with interviews and all that stuff. Something about this trailer completely put me in "alright, now to just wait a couple months" mode. But yeah...I have no doubt Luke's reintroduction will be incredible.

Absolutely. They know he's the one person we're eager to see so they're keeping him shrouded.

After watching the trailer, one of the first things that came to mind was the possibility we wouldn't be seeing much of Luke. I'd be okay with that. The movie is about a new generation, and Luke is a special character. It seems some originals like Han will have more casual roles, sort of being the main outlet for the nostalgia factor, whereas Luke will show up in more impactful moments. I like that, because it maintains his mystique, and shows how significant he is without making things too much about him.

It wasn't the fact that they're dealing with salvage. It's the cinematography that felt off to me, by looking more like your typical modern sci-fi movie instead of Star Wars. But it wasn't a major criticism anyway.

I'm very sensitive to whether scenes feel like Star Wars or not, but I took to that scene instantly.

There wasn't a scene like that in the previous films... but it felt to me like the perfect Star Wars scene for a new generation. In the wreck of a familiar environment, bundled up looking like a Sandperson or a Hoth rebel, the ultimate evolution of the "lived in" sci fi universe that Star Wars pioneered.

So while I can see that it's not "Starwarsy", it feels perfectly like a next-generation Star Wars scene.

Was the term "Sith" ever used in the OT?

I don't think it was spoken.....? Was definitely in the books, merchandise, books.

I knew Darth Vader was the Dark Lord of the Sith in 1995, no doubt. I didn't know what it meant, though.
