Star Wars: The Force Awakens Final Trailer

We'll be debating this for years but I still do not understand why Lucasfilm needed to line up a director this far in advance.

Are there practical advantages? Yeah, probably. At least they know Treverererow won't be tied up making JW 12 or whatever. On the other hand, though, I think it would be prudent to gauge the interest of guys like Edwards, Johnson, Miller, and Lord before pulling the trigger. What if Rogue One turns out super dope, and Gareth is down for making another Star Wars? What about Johnson? It'll look extra dumb if IX is shit and any of those guys come out and say they would've been willing.

JW isn't a great movie because the story is insanely stupid. As long as Trevorrow isn't writing Star Wars IX it'll be fine.

I expect it to be fine but that's what I'm worried about. I want more than fine for these movies. I want them to be great.

We can only judge Trevorrow on the work he's done, and if his directing style doesn't change between these movies then we can expect a very by-the-numbers, safe, vanilla directorial style that puts all responsibility on the script.

Seriously?? How am I supposed to describe what is tagged without spoiling it? There are 70 pages of spoiler tagged discussion here and you're singling out my one response?

Am I supposed to drag the people asking questions into a different thread?

If someone posts a question and I reply with something it spoilers, it is very clearly a reply to their question. If someone genuinely wants to know, they can click it. I'm not just posting random spoilers for fun nor is anyone else here.

However, in those two posts you quoted, one asked a question you didn't actually answer, and the other didn't even pose a question at all. Suddenly correcting mere speculations with spoilers feels like a jerk move to me.

It may have been said already but...

Is Finn gonna be the Kyle Katarn of the official canon? Stormtrooper goes rogue, becomes jedi. He even has a similar jacket to the one Kyle had in the original Dark Forces.

I'm looking forward to Finn breaking contact after discovering a Sith Temple, and Rey having to go confront him.

Trevorrow was given a lot of creative freedom on Jurassic World. Steven Spielberg even said that he kept trying to control as much of it as he could, but that in the end he wanted to back off and let Trevorrow make his own movie. Abrams said that Disney, or Bob Iger specifically, would come in and offer opinions on production and that was about it, that Abrams/Lucasfilm had the most control over it.

There's no reason to think that they're hiring Trevorrow because they think they can "control" him because if there was any shred of logic to that whatsoever, any director, Trevorrow or likewise, would be nailed with the same accusations. I love talking about movies to anyone especially in times of hype, I just wish that some people would bring more to the table than just their own ridiculous and foundation-less assertions as if they're there and know exactly how it works.

Yes. The reviews were good and it made the kind of box office money that suggests that there were plenty of repeat viewings.

Not true. There's been a legal dispute with Trevorrow regarding the writing credits. The dispute ended in Trevorrow's diminished story credit, which means he received less residual. Altought there was a fight between all four screenwriters behind the scenes, the final script was honestly dictated. I wouldn't be surprised if the final script became bastardized.

if you think that during the production of Episode VI, Abrams and Disney didn't collide, then you are highly mistaken. There's a lot of things that goes behind the scenes, where the board wants to put their fingers upon for merchandising opportunities.

Before Abrams, nobody wanted to tackle Star Wars, because they knew it meant a lot of dedication and hair pulling. You probably remember hearing big names declining work. Makes one wonder how much control Disney wanted before caving to Abrams, and now you have guys like Rian Johnson and Trevorrow making the sequel. Abrams probably wouldn't return if they asked.

What movie can I see this trailer in theaters with? Sorry if already answered. I just can't bear watching good trailers on a small screen.

Im interested in what Oscar Isaac roll is in this

In this film? He looks like Han Solo/Leia Organa mixed in one. He's Han Solo from the ace piloting POV. He's also the 'damsel-in-distress' needed rescuing and is tortured like Leia did in Episode IV (even down to being shown his home planet being destroyed).

Someone just said he is co-writing IX...

:(
I haven't seen that. IMDB isn't listing him as writer so I'm not sure it's true.

They can still be great. Not like the OT lives on it's amazing direction. It's not The Godfather, it's a fun space adventure for the entire family. You're not going to get Darren Aronofsky doing a The Fountain-esque SW movie. Maybe the Anthology movies will be more 'experimental' and less 'vanilla' (even though all previous SW movies are vanilla and it doesn't matter).

do we think there is ANY chance Disney remakes the prequels?

obviously if it ever did happen it wouldn't happen until this series ended

No but maybe one day when you are an old man. You may see a remake of original star wars. Remake will happen one day. But we may not be around or probably be a very old man.

Love when that happens.

I can't stop watching the trailer. I haven't been this hyped for a movie in a long, long time.
I'm seeing SPECTRE on IMAX so hope there's no reason for Star Wars not to appear before it

Why bother? New trilogies or bust

Wasn't JW generally well received? Everyone I've talked said they loved the movie. Then I come here and people trash it?

This is why I watch movies for myself and make my own decisions.

I enjoyed the film. I would not classify it as "good", but I am glad I saw it, it felt like an entertaining though dumb sequel to the first film with some cool action and scenes but nothing of any substance. I would however want a Star Wars film to qualify as a minimum of "good".
JJ is a strong palette cleanser for Episode 7, he knows sci-fi action and Star Wars, and he's competent at all that stuff. As far as a return to form I would trust him with a straightforward "modern OT" Episode 7 to set the tone, and at the minimum I believe he will deliver a good film, hopefully a great one.
Rian Johnson is very talented both as a writer and director and I have very high hopes for Episode 8 to build on 7 and go much deeper and in its own bold direction (not unlike ESB to ANH). He seems like a great choice for the second part on all levels.

Colin Trevorrow has made basically one film that led him to get this job, which was an amusing but silly blockbuster. He's highly unproven with this kind of film and seems like a real step down after Rian Johnson. I still love most of ROTJ but looking back it is a step down from ESB, and I don't want a weaker third film again.

So crazy thing I just realized

At the very first second of the trailer, the pin holes on the decaying Star Destroyer panel that Rey opens makes it look like a bunch of stars.

Now, if you think of that scene coming right after the opening crawl, I think this could be the very first shot of the entire film.

To be fair it was going to be hard to top Empire

Maybe.

This...is now my expectation

The theater my friends and I are going to are showing like 8ish viewings on that Thursday, but I managed to snag us tickets to one of only 2 imax showings (which happens to be the last one that day)...how early should we show up to get good seats...60-90 mins?

N-nah, I don't see it: too peaceful.

The first shot usually establishes the premise. I think the panel is an afterword of the prologue, which itself occurs in space.

no doubt. Lines will be well around the theater

Of course it was. But hell, ROTJ has some of the best parts of any Star Wars film, including ESB. Pretty much everything to do with Luke, Vader and the Emperor throughout the film is great and a perfect continuation from ESB's treatment.
Just some revamping of certain aspects and it would be an ideal conclusion to the OT. It's still good, just has some flaws I never noticed as a kid (when it was my favourite of all the films).

Don't you have reserved seats? Mine are, thought all imax did that.

So is that villain a 1:1 to Revan's design? I'm just going off memory and could probably be arsed to Google a comparison, but I just thought it was interesting. They look very similar.

do we think there is ANY chance Disney remakes the prequels?

No, because - possibly with the exception of Episode II - the prequel films aren't complete shit. Just incredibly mediocre.

Hell, I'd rank Episode III as a pretty good SW film.
