Do you think Halo 5 will live up to expectations?

MS has a lot riding on this game. With MCC being a disaster the spotlight is even brighter on Halo 5 to be the quality of 1-3 to shut up the naysayers. Even one little launch hiccup will undoubtedly be put under the microscope and have people thinking the worst.

Now, obviously MS has a huge investment in Halo. Marketing and development assuredly call for millions of units in expected sales.

So first question, what's your prediction on units moved in the first 24 hours? First month?

Next, what are your expectations for the community? Will it thrive for a month? Six months? several years? We've all seen the Halo 4 chart (and it hurts me to look at it to this day) indicating that Halo is on the decline with COD taking the throne as the go to multiplayer shooter.

Even with everything that I've said, things look good to me. There's definitely an excitement even on this forum surrounding the launch of Halo 5. Something that I honestly didn't expect.
 
I think the hype is too big - and it'll never please everyone. I've heard *less than favourable* things about bits of the SP campaign, but I suspect the multiplayer will keep people happy for a good while.
 
Honestly? No.

The Halo titles not only live in nostalgia but they were made by a different developer, so any shortcoming is immediately attributed to "these aren't the same developers the game would be better if it was still Bungie" by probably a sizable amount of the fanbase. And as we have seen recently Bungie isn't infallible.

That's not to say it won't sell like hot cakes.
 
I think it will be succesful critically and commercially.

Whether the multiplayer will still be active years from now the way Halo 2 and 3 were, I have my doubts.
 
Sales wise certainly - I wouldn't be surprised if it easily tops 10m in sales. Will do well critically too, but no it won't live up to the hype - nothing ever does.
 
I think they've nailed it this time, but we won't know till the game is out.

Halo 4 had several red flags prior to release. This time around 343 has been saying a lot of the right things and have put their own stamp on things while staying true to the core of the franchise.

Personally it feels really good to be excited for a Halo game again. This generation hasn't truly had an exclusive game of this scale yet that has huge mass appeal and is a massive and expensive production.

I think people are hungry for a really good Halo game right now. Destiny upset a lot of people with it's lack of story and content. Titanfall, although mechanically solid, did not catch on. COD has stagnated in the midst of annual releases and Battlefield is coming off 2 fairly disappointing games. Battlefront seems super casual and will likely suffer the same problems as Titanfall.

Let's see if it's still active months, if not weeks, later before we start talking about years.
 
After Reach and Halo 4, it's almost assured. Sure once the hype of a new title wears off we'll have the salt start and counteract the slurp, but everything we've heard has been much better than we've got in the past. Halo 5 beta multi-player is much better than Reach or Halo 4 was.

The new Forge has rejuvenated the Forge communities with anticipation because it's a substantial change. ESports and competitive pro play will be rejuvenated as well. Spectator modes, using REQ pack microtransaction money to fund prize pools for HCS tournaments etc.

Ultimately, it's not about whether the game will live up to expectations as opposed to just being a good Halo game. The biggest 'what if' is Warzone and so far, all the beta testers and people who have played at expos have said it's a very fun mode and that they'll play it more when the game launches.

I think 343 at least listened to the feedback of fans, but will it appeal to the masses? To catch fire it really has to be critically acclaimed and MP has to have legs to go up against the crowded shooter market.

the killer will always be Call of Duty titles, at least for the foreseeable future. If Halo 5 can survive audiences moving towards Call of Duty and still maintain a somewhat active community, it'll survive anything. I don't even think Battlefront will take a sizable chunk of people as the communities aren't necessarily entirely the same.

Lord knows I loved the xbox to 360 Halo titles but could never get into battlefield.
 
I think so.

The beta was mega fun and it seems like the single player will also be great.
 
I think it will, assuming peoples expectations are in check.

I believe it'll be better than Halo 4, and I believe it'll be far more stable than MCC. I'm super excited to see if I'm right.
 
For me halo has gotten better with every release (of the main series) so 5 should continue that trend. The multi-player is going to be excellent.
 
I made this exact same thread about a week ago and it got closed. So I dunno if this is ok.

I think it will though. As I become more unhappy with destiny my hype for halo rises.
 
I think it will have a high attachment rate. The game will be critically successful, whether or not the multiplayer remains active after a few months depends on how well 343i supports it. The fact that they are going to release BTB and forge post launch could be a good thing as it will bring people back to try out those game modes. As for living up to the hype, I think it will live up to the expectations I have set but obviously some people may be let down. Finally some people will hate on the game and nitpick at little things, 343i literally has no room for error especially on the multiplayer side, the multiplayer needs to run flawlessly.
 
It will sell a lot.

MP seems to be easily superior to Halo 4, so I don't see the population drop off being as fast as with that game. DLC maps being free won't hurt either.

As a game though, it would have to be better than CE, and I doubt that will ever happen.
 
Just like every Halo release, they are ups and downs. Halo 5 is no different.

I do think it'll receive far more positive feedback than Halo 4, though.
 
I think it will do extremely well critically. 90+ even. But hardcore Halo fans will probably not like it/find something to be angry about. I think it will fair better with those fans than Halo 4 though.

It will like all of the MP games releasing for the rest of the year, but for how long? Battlefront is not designed to be a competitive game, whereas Halo 5 is aiming to have a high skill ceiling.

Battlefront seems poised to fall into the same traps as Titanfall. That is, a mechanically solid game with not enough content and gameplay whose novelty wears off quick.

Battlefront will sell well initially, but people don't want to pay $110 for just a MP game. After playing the beta and hearing feedback from others, Battlefront just doesn't seem to have legs to support itself.
 
The stars are aligning and everything is pointing to something special. The free maps and post launch release of big lag battle will bring people back as well.

which will be needed as people like the easy kill play in cod.

I'm sure the multiplayer will be solid even if it's not to everyone's tastes. The quality of the campaign is going to be the hardest thing to nail, as I thought the level design in Halo 4 was extremely inconsistent and I wonder whether the co-op focus will make it less enjoyable for people playing solo. Also interested to see where they take the story. After an interesting premise, I thought Halo 4's was pretty awful.

I didn't know Killzone was launching on Xbox One consoles this fall...

He's talking about the fact that Halo 5 DLC will be free, whereas Battlefront season pass is $50 dollars, Black Ops 3 will also have an expensive season pass. This might matter to shooter fans this fall on Xbox One. Nothing to do with all shooters.
 
Just remembered it is going up against COD and Battlefront. Well the fact it is being released before them does give it a bit of a advantage. It is also getting free maps so that may help it out.
Halo really needs to be released in a year when Infinity Ward is making a COD game, Halo 5 would do better against a Infinity Ward COD than a Treyarch COD.

It was Infinity Ward Call of Duty that took over Halo's lead with the release of Call of Duty 4, cemented it with MW2 etc. Treyarch games upto Black Ops really struggled. The modern Infinity Ward is just IW in name, in my opinion. Respawn, which made TitanFall, is the REAL Infinity Ward nowadays since so many of the IW devs went there.

He was saying that Halo has a better chance against IW CODs because they are bad.

Black Ops 2 basically curbstomped Halo 4's concurrents as soon as it came out. This time Halo 5 has to contend with Black Ops 3 AND Battlefront, mere weeks after launch.

Honestly though, it depends on what expectations you're talking about.

HaloGAF's (and by extension, the 1%er hardcore Halo faithful) expectations? No chance. The biggest Halo fans can't even really come to a consensus on which Halo game they like the most. There's large contingents of fans who think CE was the pinnacle and everything else that came after was trash. Likewise with 2, 3, ODST, etc. It's a no-win scenario with this group because too much deviation from the "Halo magic formula" (which, again, nobody can really agree with) causes the old faithful to riot, not enough deviation causes another large group to complain that the franchise is stagnant and that there's no new ideas, etc.

Sales expectations? Will probably continue the downward trend that started with Halo: Reach. With the current install base of the xbone, attach would have to be something like Halo CE (50%+) to get even close to matching Reach or 4, which launched with install bases on the 360 that were something like 3-4x the current xbone install base.

Critical expectations? I think they'll do well. Mid-80s metacritic. It really depends on whether the press decide to go with a redemption-for-Halo-4-and-MCC-343-is-figuring-it-out-finally narrative (ie Destiny: The Taken King), or if there's a hangover from MCC.

BLOPSII was the peak of CoD sales, been on decline since. This year will be interesting sales wise.

I think the single player is going to be very divisive. I think most people will love the improvements in the gameplay and will enjoy the "game" part of it but the story, and where 343 takes the lore as well as forcing people to play as a new character is going to be divided into those that love it and those that have it.

As for multiplayer based on my bit of time in the beta I actually think the arena multiplayer i's going to be a massive success and could take the Mantle so to speak from CoD as the next flagship multiplayer title. I don't think Warzone is going to be the hit that 343i wants it be however as it's to similar to battlefield without the variety of a BF game.
 
I have a good feeling that it will. Especially since I loved everything they did with the beta, and that was nearly a year ago.
