10M$ seem quite high. That house doesn't look that big. Might as well build a new one.
There was actually a real estate assessment done some years ago which argued that the property would actually be more valuable without the house itself, because the house is in such poor condition but the land is prime real estate with a fantastic view of the Ottawa River.

Well, the British are going through this with spending 50 million to renovate Buckingham Palace. At least we don't have to pay for that crap.
Buckingham Palace is a genuine historical treasure.

I have no time for anything related to the royals, so I totally understand why some British people are salty that their tax money is going to an old lady's house when their Tory government is slashing and cutting as many services as they can get away with.

The government would still own Buckingham Palace whether it was a monarchy or not.

Authoritarian leaders have it so much easier. Look at Erdogan's new crib:

It's $10 million... who the fuck cares. Just renovate it, make it available for more business like when wining and dining heads of state and call it a day. Had they fixed it YEARS ago, it would have cost way less.

This is pretty bad too:

The attempt to shield the Conservative party leadership from criticism is consistent with patterns that set in during the campaign itself. Sources said Novak was so defensive of Harper that he angrily rejected reports that the leader had become a personal liability for the Conservatives on the campaign trail. And there is growing concern in the party over Harper’s apparent plan to stay on as an MP.

“We can’t have the frank discussions that are necessary for renewal if Mr. Harper is there in the room, like Diefenbaker after he stopped being Tory leader,” one MP said.

I wonder if Harper would pull a Duceppe and take over the party again right before the next election :P

Either way, the news doesn't sound good if you're a CPC supporter. Harper's fear of being criticized is actually astounding.

Also, Ray Novak is sounding like as much a liability as Harper, even if you don't take the Duffy stuff into account.

Yup, delaying the repairs to avoid hurting people's feelings will make it worse. The house already sounds like a safety hazard that a regular Canadian family wouldn't live in, let alone a Prime Minister. I'm actually surprised that Chretien or Martin didn't get it fixed up. Not surprised that Harper didn't, considering his decision was probably influenced partly by his ego and partly by what Maharg stated.

This coupled with the article about Jenni Bryne, the CPC campaign manager, and the conflicts during the election make it seem like the perfect environment for a coup d'état. Either that, or form a new party with the MPs that are locked out and people still in the party. I don't think anyone but Ray Novak and a few other diehard fanboys like Harper and what he's done with the party at this point. And there is probably a lot of dissatisfaction from the CPC voters with Harper. They should strike while the iron is hot.

I buy homo milk in Ontario (Toronto) and it's always at least $6.00+ where the hell are people buying it for 4.50? Unless you're buying skim or something...

I have no idea where you're buying it for $6.00. Unless you're buying some marked up tru taste or organic stuff, you shouldn't be spending more than $4.50 on homo. Heck, I get my 2% for 3.50. I doubt Homo is much more expensive.

The biggest problem is that likely more than the house is worth to repair it. This is from a couple years ago, but it has the value at $7.2 million. It might actually make more sense to spend $10 mil to tear it down and build something better, especially since (from what I'm reading) other than it's historical significance it doesn't seem to have been especially well put together.

I don't see how the market value really matters unless we're trying to flip the place.

Historical value would make it worth maintaining no? And protecting something historical surely has better optics than tearing down something historical and building a $10 million dollar house.

As someone mentioned, it's only 80 years old.
Wouldn't it actually make more sense to build a modern house that is cheaper, more efficient, and probably will last longer?

I think that makes more sense. Build a new house, which should be significantly cheaper than $10 million I would think, and turn 24 Sussex into a museum.

Sussex doesn't even look special. I doubt most people even know about it. I honestly didn't know about it until people started mentioning it when Trudeau won. It's just a very big house. They should turn it into a museum and make a new house. Something iconic like the White House (but a house not an office).

Speaking frankly, there's quite a lot you didn't know about up until and continuing through this election.... :P

That's true but I still know more than most people on these matters. My friends and siblings know even less than I do.

Not having heard of 24 Sussex Drive until October 20, 2015 does you no favours, after nearly 700 posts in a Canadian Election thread, no matter how much more ignorant your peers are.

Especially when you have quasi-styled yourself as GAF's Canadian security expert. :P

Yeah, but they could turn it into a museum and fund it with ticket sales.
It is a museum though? I went there before, it was lame as hell. Still the first place that comes to mind when I think tourist trap lol.

Edit: brain fart. Was thinking of Tower of London. You can still crash at Lizzy's place though and get a tour.

I've never seen it mentioned until now and this is my first election. Like I said, the place is pretty unremarkable so it's pretty obscure knowledge (in my age group, at least).

And I don't know what the second part is referring to.

It's really not.

Just a tongue-in-cheek reference to your hand-wringing over the "threat" that could be posed to Trudeau and his family by GamerGate, and your baseless speculation that the recent OPP-led human trafficking investigation "most likely" has something to do with the prominent "Murdered and Missing Aboriginal Women" file despite the lack of any supporting evidence.

I don't know how much you know about GG but they are pretty good at harassing people when they focus their energies. I never said that GG could threaten Trudeau's security or anything, just that they could, if they wanted to, humiliate him/his family, like they have done to many. You might not care but I was simply pointing that out as a possibility. I also said that GG uses NeoGAF and would see the thread. That was proven to be true in the thread that was posted in gaming.

As of April 2015, 174 aboriginal women across all police jurisdictions remain missing, 111 of these under suspicious circumstances.
It seems likely that one of the people were found are among that to me.

It's really not.
Even a stupid ignorant racist québécois like me knew about it. :pp

Pretty good of him of not knowing about things like this, but still being knowledgeable enough to know everything about the culture of provinces he's never been to. I'm impressed!

How old are you?

31. But I assure you, young whippersnapper, I was familiar with what "24 Sussex Drive" was when you were still 5 years old. :P

I know 100x more about Trudeau's security than you do about GG.

On what grounds do you declare that something "seems likely" to be linked from one story to another?

I know enough about Quebec to know that Harper's racist campaign was ripped straight from there. I don't know how someone living in Quebec can't put that together.

lmao, shots fired

Yeah I don't know how people actually living there since their birth would arrive at different conclusions than some guy from another province with a hard-on about hating Québec! Truly baffling.

31.

That would explain it. I got the sense that you were from another time.

I don't understand how your knowledge of Trudeau's security is relevant here. Can they stop people from harassment?

Why are you getting so worked up over the missing and murdered indigenous women thing? Did I hit a nerve? I didn't know I could offend anyone by assuming that at least one of the people that was found in that human trafficking thing is Aboriginal.

You were born in the most nationalistic province in the country, therefore, what you say about it is true. Compelling argument.

Ignorant speculation masquerading as informed opinion is what offends me.

Which seems to be your entire shtick, to me.

You know Boogie works for the RCMP, right?

i think Walpurgis needs to spend a week-end in Montreal get drunk. visit strip clubs, night clubs, eat late night poutine and have a smoke sandwich the next day as a hangover remedy

You will go back home a changed man, i promiss you that

I, for one, volunteer to be his guide on such a weekend... :)

Better than you do.
I'm less interested in hearing about "how much you know about X" and more interested in about what you know.
You know Boogie works for the RCMP, right?
That doesn't matter. This entire time I've been arguing with him, all he's responded with is "you're wrong, I know more", same as the other guy. If he has something to say, I'm willing to listen but so far, he's said nothing.

Manitoba would be a safer bet, actually.

Since I'm not a nationalist that can't see my province taking criticism without jumping to its defense, I have no problem saying that I'm well aware of Manitoba's racism issue. There is nowhere in this country where Aboriginals are more hated. I don't see how that's relevant to Harper's campaign and Quebec. Nice try though.
