For me, the intent is what matters. If the guy was honestly thinking "hey, I'd look more like Kanye if I painted my skin" rather than "lol blackface!!" then I don't have a problem with it.

So if you had a crippling disease, and then you saw someone dressed as a cripple for Halloween, you wouldn't feel a little bit of anger? I'm just trying to find the basic depth of empathy some of you folks have. Yes, black skin can be equated to a disease.

"It's just halloween, get over it. Actors like Robert Downey did it too".

No. Just no.

Like doing a test and getting the question wrong...then still getting it wrong on purpose after the teacher has given you the answer again and again....
The answer is right there infront of you.

Like its okay to dress at Hitler, or any terrible dictator, or to dress up as anything else offensive, but when it comes to this everyone loses their minds.

Because the dictators were those in power. They were the oppressors.

I think a "holocaust victim" halloween costume would get a similarly poor reception.

just curious, are you black?

if he's not black... honestly his opinions on how offensive blackface or in what situations he sees it as 'okay' don't really matter as much

I'm biracial, so my opinion is roughly half as important as yours.

Depends on the situation. Are they dressing up as Stephen Hawking or just trying to make fun of some random cripple? That's what I mean by intent.

Oh my jesus.

Would you like to have a serious discussion and address it?

I honestly believe that at some level, being offended by an act only empowers those that carry out the act.

I'd say Asians have a very different sensibility about it. It's not as if Chinese Americans weren't imported as slaves, suffered through yellow-face, continue to be white-washed in film roles, etc. It just doesn't offend me; I don't hold it against the majority white culture and people who committed the acts decades if not centuries ago.

There are actual, racist things today that are worthy of being offended by and if this is what black people want to get worked up about, then I think it's a waste of energy. I cannot even believe the reactions being drawn out in this thread from black Americans given the gravity of racist acts that have an impact on the quality of life for black Americans versus some white guy putting on blackface to dress up as Kanye for Halloween.

Police brutality. Income disparity. Institutional racism in housing, employment, education, policing. Holy shit, there's serious racism in the US and a white dude dressing up as Kanye is going to drive black Americans nuts?

All weekend I've notice different folks bringing up some "white guilt" reasoning on why posters on NeoGAF might disagree with something. The hell is going on? Do you hear yourselves? Damn it..did it again..

I'm not angry or upset. Its not a really important issue to me, its just everyone always makes this a big deal.

Like its okay to dress at Hitler, or any terrible dictator, or to dress up as anything else offensive, but when it comes to this everyone loses their minds.

But thats just like me shitty opinion, so I'll just show myself out.

Who the fuck is that anyway?

Holy shit this is what I mean, calm down. It's halloween, dressing up as a Kanye West isn't even that racist, I don't get it.

Dressing up like Hitler or a nazi would be in extremely poor taste and not "okay" so I'm not sure where you are getting that from. Like, would you dress like Hitler if we're going to a costume party with a lot of Jewish people in attendance? How about dressing like Osama Bin Laden and attending an FDNY Halloween function? If you say yes your an asshole (and probably antisemetic). And that's fine. You have every right to be a complete asshole. Nobody is trying to take away your right to be an asshole. Just don't expect people to be okay with it. And don't expect to be able to dictate to people when they are allowed to stop being offended by something with hundreds of years of negative connotations.

Do some of you realize how you sound placing Halloween costumes higher in importance over the perspectives and history of an entire race?
People with little empathy tend not to care and understand. And that's the best case interpretation/scenario for the madness going on here. Nobody should ever stand for or defend blackface or any other kind of appropriation that whittles down a group to a negative portrayal and stereotypes.

You really don't see how the "frivolous" problem is both a product of and perpetuation of the feelings that create the "serious" problems?

Doubling down huh?

You've got moxie, I'll give you that.

just curious, are you black?

I'm black and I consider black face only racist due to historical context. I personally wouldn't be comfortable calling this guy a racist for dressing up as Kayne and painting his face as it is Halloween and there is a good possibility he is not aware of blackface in a historical context.

Everything you listed drives black people nuts, and I'm not sure why you're asserting that the reaction to a dummy in blackface is overshadowing, for example, the breadth and reach of Black Lives Matter, unless you're taking the sample size of posters on GAF and extrapolating.

There seems to be a distinction between hateful black face and skin painting, at least to me. I'm not black, but I'm not offended by either example. The Kanye face painting doesn't seem to be negative, judging by the one still photo. Features aren't exaggerated, sign isn't racist, etc.

It's pretty much a parody of black face though. Chamillionaire did it once in one of his music videos too.

Though guy in OP looks nothing like Kanye, unless somehow glasses, beard and black =Kanye. pretty dumb

do you think that the people who are upset here just ignore threads about the bolded or something? honestly?

I feel like the defense force here never interacts with black people for real, online or off. I mean, we even already have the one assuming everyone here is white. Would you seriously wear shit like this in front of a mixed crowd? I figure the reason the guy did was because he knew he was hanging exclusively with racist white people in the south.

It's called multitasking son, have you heard of it?
Conversely, what do you have to gain from someone in blackface and telling black people to get over it?

So apparently not approving of blackface somehow takes energy? And you can't focus on all of those things. I hope you know your callous disregard of black peoples feelings on this subject are a perfect example of the reason we will not get over it

No, I don't want to have a serious discussion with you. One, because based on your posts you don't seem very bright and probably not worth engaging with, and two, because I doubt you'll be around long enough to respond anyway, due to, you know, your stupid fucking posts.

Can we not ban Charlie?

I'm seriously intrigued on how deep the rabbit hole is going to go.

"Get over it" is a classic, but "Here's what black people should be pissed about!" is one that's Hall of Fame status. I want to see if he can top himself.

Serious question: at some point, will black people let it go? Maybe 300 years from now?

Asian people were brought here and exploited as slaves to build America's railways and as slave labor in gold mines.

There has been a history of yellow-face (e.g. The King and I) as well not to mention the continued white-washing of Asian roles in movies (e.g. Avatar, GITS, etc.) Asians generally continue to be portrayed as feminine, nerdy; they are rarely featured outside of martial arts films.

I'm not salty about it at all. My sister isn't. My mom isn't. I dunno, at some level, you gotta just it go.

Americans mocked Japanese people during WWII, rounded Japanese Americans up and put them in a camp, dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. The Japanese don't seem that salty about it.

Even if you look at China and Japan and the atrocities carried out during WWII including the Rape of Nanjing. Despite all of that, China is Japan's largest trading partner. At some point, you just gotta let it go, IMO.

No words needed. The shit is masterpiece in of itself.

If you need an explanation on why his race is relevant in relation to his post, I don't have the time nor patience to deal with you
Of course it's relevant, we're talking about reason and facts in this discussion. A white man can use reason and empathy to form a solid opinion on the matter. What a terrible world we would live in if others couldn't empathise.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "let it go" fullstop but I can't help but laugh at black people who get so flustered by this shit. It's a bad costume, there is no ill will or intent here. Get the fuck over it.

If this was something like the various "white people dressing up as stereotypical/racist depictions of black people" sure I'd be shaking my head and criticizing them for that bullshit. But at this point it seems like most of the outrage over shit like this is manufactured.

Stop caring so much about what white people are doing that doesn't even impact your life.

You see a lot of these types of costume photos pop up from frat parties, which also seem like wealthy, white, insular communities.

Dear lord the blackface children in the coming years will have some amazing threads

What's worse is he has the most generic out ft possible, and a rounded hightop fade. Hopefully Rogue one takes some of the hype for halloween, or there will be blackface everywhere.
