The Hateful Eight isn't the only movie getting 70mm love this winter. It'll get MOST of it, yeah. But Star Wars is getting some 70mm screens.

Eleven of 'em, in fact.

Closest to me is Seattle. Don't think I'll be making that trip, though.

It's not the worst drive for me, but it's a stupid gimmick for TFA.
I'll do it for The Hateful Eight if the process is direct enough. I could see Tarantino being crazy enough to do separate analog and digital timing.

It's my birthday, so I'm going to try and get my fiance to finally sit down and watch the Star Wars trilogy with me.

... Going to try and find the original versions. My co-worker tried to show his wife the Special Editions and she hated them. "Who is that guy at the end?" "That's Anakin." "What? Why's he young? He looks nothing like the guy we just saw." "George Lucas added him in and replaced the original guy." "Why? If you don't see the prequels, you don't know who this random guy is at the very end, and if you do see the prequels, they spoil everything in the original films! How did he think that was a good idea?!"

... Knowing my lady love, she'd have similar complaints.

I seriously doubt special edition changes are gonna drastically change a first time viewers opinion of it. Forcing them to watch something they might not want to on the other hand...

Yup. That shit is just distracting, even if it's your first time. People do the math. They know it's wierd to see bad 1997 CGI in a 1977 film. They can tell when a prequel element was shoved in screaming "hey, look at me!", even if they've never seen a prequel before.

Harry's Despecialized Editions, or bust.

I know her well enough. She's just put it off.

Same thing happened with Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and Jurassic Park. Once she finally saw them, she loved them.

Try to find the SE from 97 on VHS.

Or the originals that were included with the DVD editions. Anakin wasn't changed until the DVDs were released.

Why the fuck is this not happening at the Aquarium in New Orleans

Oh well, I saw one of the Batman movies there and it was a goddamn nightmare being a 200lb dude sitting for 3.5 hours in chairs designed to keep 10 year olds sitting up straight for 15 minutes

Was Boba Fett always in ANH? I saw him with Jabba after the scene where Jabba is talking to Han and I thought it was weird, lol. I also thought that Boba was introduced in ESB, is this not the case?

Boba Fett was introduced before ESB actually. During the Holiday Special. In a cartoon.

So just a quick question, I recently started watching The Clone wars Series (2008), but if Gendy's 2003 version is not cannon then what is the reason for Grievous' coughing, since he coughs from the opening episodes of the new series?

He just coughs. There's no real reason.

Well, I mean the real reason is that, I believe, Matthew Wood had a cough when he was recording the lines for Grievous, and Lucas thought it'd be a funny quirk, and told him to keep doing it every now and again. I think that's the story?

But there's no real in-universe reason anymore, so far as I know.

Oh, ok thanks.

I just remembered his lungs being crushed by Mace Windu in Gendy's version, and it was weird to see him coughing in the new series, since it's supposed to take place way before attack on Corucsant.

Just because the other stuff isn't official canon doesn't mean it can't contain anything relevant to the canon. Think of it as canon until contradicted by official canon.

Edit:well nevermind, I never did watch the old clone wars cartoon. Guess he coughs because it sounds villainous.

Damnit all was thinking of doing pacific science center when ordering tix but their website was completely fucked at the time, ended up going with another theater. Oh well, of course I'll be seeing it multiple times anyways.

The canon in-universe explanation for Grievous's cough is that it's a side effect of his cyborg body. He may have enhanced abilities but the transition from organic to mechanical form was not a perfect process. If I remember correctly, his imperfect respiration is meant to be a precursor to the breathing system eventually used by Darth Vader or something to that effect.

How come they aren't able to make new body parts?

He has, a shit ton.

But the fact that the tech is not perfect still stands

Wait, isn't 70mm what the real IMAX screens show? Why is it only 11 screens?

Same tech as interstellar, TDKR, TDK right?

I thought I read a lot of TFA was being filmed with IMAX cameras, so why isn't every "real" IMAX going to show it that way?

Only one sequence was shot using IMAX cameras...

The desert crash sequence involving Finn's TIE Fighter

But theatres are maxmising showings of the 3D IMAX version because it's cheaper to put on and doesn't require the additional Laser projection to work the 3D - some cinemas in the UK are ONLY showing 3D versions on the opening days.

Although as a side note - it looks like Star Wars: Rogue One and Captain America: Civil War are being shot with a new version of 2D IMAX camera.

I just watched the 'Star Wars tech' docu in the blu ray set and this is the explanation offered there. His lungs fill with water or something of that effect, it's definitely because of his transition to a mechanical body.

And yes, the tech used for Grievous was perfected for Darth Vader.

So I watched ep 4 last week for the first time ever and really enjoyed it, but watched The Empire Strikes Back for the first time tonight and... let's just say I now get it. That was an amazing movie. I never doubted Star Wars, I just somehow haven't watched it in my 22 years. My family weren't massive fans and only in the past few years have I grown a love for sci fi. So it was only a matter of time before I had to watch Star Wars. The Force Awakens hype lit the fire, now I can't wait for that either.

(I'm watching the despecialized editions fwiw! )

What does it matter why Grievous coughs, he's a dumb clown villain who does dumb things.

Palpatine is the only decent PT villain, although a lot of that is thanks to RotJ. Plus it's easy to be a "smart" villain when everyone around you is dumber than a nerf herder.

The desert crash sequence involving Finn's TIE Fighter
The Millenium Falcon chase on Jakku is also in IMAX, though it's most likely the entire Jakku part.

Also, I believe Rogue One isn't going to be shot in IMAX, but on Anamorphic 70mm. Captain America: Civil War is being shot in digital IMAX for its finale, and Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1&2 are being shot completely in that format.

We will ask next time if we are allowed to discuss this, ok?

I'm just saying, you're not going to find a good explanation for anything about a character like that. His name is Grievous. He uses FOUR lightsabers and he's HALF-ROBOT and he's EVIL. Original character do not steal. He's a character a five year old or a Sonic fan artist would come up with.

The cyborg tech being perfected for Vader is just a dumb retcon seeing as how Vader moves worse than Grievous and is apparently incapable of jumping.

Really? I always thought it was because he got his heart force choked by Windu in the cartoon. He never coughed before that fight.

That was the reason before Gennedy's Clone Wars cartoon was made non-canon a few years ago.

And Windu didn't choke Greivous' heart. He actually force pushed him so hard that that his chest plate was crushed into his chest, weakening his internal organs.

Honestly I had the complete opposite reaction. I've been watching them in anticipation to the new one and I don't get it. Granted I pretty much knew the story already, and some things like the poor animations and effects are excusable due to how long ago these movies came out. But the acting is so horrible, It's distracting. Everyone is just bad I can't think of a character that has passable acting in the OT. Action scenes are boring as hell too (and what's up with those legged tanks? lol). Vader is a cool looking villain but turns out he's just a moron doing someone else's job for them, for no real reason... He even gets killed in a stupid way.

The only one I've been able to enjoy has been episode I. At least it has a nice artstyle and some cool Jedi fights. And a villain that actually does something. Still have episode III to watch but I doubt my opinion on the series will change much.

That said, the universe they created is actually nice and I'm looking forward to the new movie.

Lord have mercy, Daisy Ridley.

Anyways I've lost a lot of Facebook friends over this trailer. Why the fuck do so many people have a problem with a woman and a black guy starring in a film? I didn't even give it a second thought watching the trailers. Hell why am I even surprised.

I have a friend who is planning on trying to buyout a screening of it, already promised ten tickets worth of funds for the endeavor. It would be awesome to get to watch this with about 40 other friends (and friends of friends) and not deal with the usual opening night Star Wars hijinks. I hope our gambit pays off.

Edit: Vader blamed the Jedi for his lot in life and wanted to extinguish their order and make a better world/galaxy (in his opinion). He wasn't just some dufus running around killing Jedi.
