What is the average opinion on Witcher 3's writing and storytelling here? I think it's really good for a video game, but it's definitely not a revelation. Part of that is the fact that its source material is mediocre genre fiction, and I feel like CDPR succeeds in spite of that in a lot of ways.
The high pointsBloody Baron, Skellige successionare great examples of how far open world storytelling has come, but the devs also miss the mark pretty often. Lots of side quests that just feel like filler, repetitive contracts, a frankly disappointing (in my opinion, of course) main storyline, some fairly bland and uninteresting main characters. I won't get into the disappointing race and gender aspects because I still think that you can write a good storyas CDPR didthat's full of those problems, but they're definitely present.
Again, I think W3 is a very good game on the whole. Maybe the best of the year so far. But I can't get on board with heaping praise on its storytelling and writing so uncritically. That said, I'm not sure I could come up with very many examples of games that equal W3 in these regards, so I think all the facile praise for it is probably just indicative of how far the medium has to go. Here's hoping F4 continues to push it forward, even if it won't do so technically.
