Fallout 4 PC Ultra screenshots

Gotta say, those screenshots look nice to me. Obviously there are much better looking open world games out there, but something about this game is attractive to me.

Also ENB added parallax to Skyrim textures, so we got ground like this (other mods added it to brick walls, rocks, road cobblestones etc too).

I'm not really excusing them, so much as saying PC gamers at least don't need to let this bother them because of the modding community.

I will however point out that Bethesda work harder than any other developer to provide the most amazing mod tools and mod-friendly games for their community, so while modders do a lot of the end work, you really can't forget that it's Bethesda's dedication to their community and hard work before and post launch that allows mods on this scale to happen at all.

That's the kind of mod I would pay money for. Impressive stuff.

Lazyness ? =/

You caught them. Red fucking handed. Those veteran Bethesda developers tasked with creating an entry for a high profile IP just didn't feel like it when it came to the graphics. They just stopped like Forrest Gump in the middle of his three year run across the US.

Zenimax are cheapskates?

They like budgeted a cross gen game not banking on next gen consoles taking off.

Likely kept everything the same and didnt change gears even when cross gen support was dropped

Could explain why we are only getting modest bells and whistles over the base game

I've long stopped caring too much about visuals. So long as it runs smoothly, has solid art and doesn't look like mud or like it's from 2003, I'm pretty okay with just about anything. That said, this looks fine to me. It's not really a Fallout aesthetic (more like a slightly grungier BioShock Infinite) but it's not like Bethesda was ever going to make a real Fallout game, so...

I have much greater concerns for their character animation than the environments. Not to mention... everything else about the game.

Meanwhile in 2009 (ARMA 2, open world game):

arma22009-06-2318-47-d1a6b.jpg

I'd much rather them focus more time on the story and optional questlines than work on an air conditioner texture

Personally, I think the screenshots look great (considering compression).

BUT, I am a little nervous about the houses... It looks like every single one is boarded up, preventing the user from entering and exploring.

I don't remember that being the case in FALLOUT 3.

My positive takeaways are it that its improved over what we had

Outside areas look pretty good in the daylight.

Buildings, large objects, and interiors have varying quality of detail.

Overall im just gonna be happy to play another fallout but i think ive been stern in my criticisms of the visuals

Maybe bethesda should hire those modders if they're not capable enough.
Why pay them if they also do the same work for free in their spare time?

That said, while Bethesda (particularly Elder Scrolls) always had a strong mod community, Skyrim's explosive popularity really took that to the next level. It remains to be seen if this will extend to the same degree with Fallout 4.

I'm not sure why people are still hating on the graphics, this looks fucking great to me. My old PC died literally yesterday so I built a new one, and I'm sure it's gonna be well worth it for the 10th.

Still really not pretty at all. Still looks last gen. Did a side-by-side comparison with some of the prettier last gen games here at the office and FO4 loses in lots of cases.

Dat cross gen curse

I think this might be the last long term developed AAA game that will carry this moniker

I wonder what I can reasonably expect with my old ass 7850 3gb, it's the one thing I didn't upgrade with my recent build from a month or two ago.

I'm trying to hold out till Pascal and whatever AMD has for next year, but man it's getting tough.

They have no incentive to hire these people because they know there are superfans out there who will invest loads of free time into fixing up the visuals of their game. Win win right there.

Maybe this is their plan:

Force modders to fix their game for free, so the modders complain about not being paid, so they can reintroduce paid mods.

yeah, I know this is tin foil hat stuff, but someone needed to say it

I really don't like this narrative that "bethesda hasn't done anything to improve their engine." The thing is that they HAVE made several improvements to the engine. "Barely" is ridiculous even without knowing how the immediate specifics of how they changed underlying tech aside from the obvious huge improvement to lighting, materials and character animation, (yes, it's an improvement, play fallout 3 on 360 or even worse, on ps3). And no that doesn't make me a blind fanboy for thinking so.

See. And I find W3 to be one of the top five best looking games ever lol, (and GOTY). :P

It's not so much that they've done nothing to improve the engine, but more that they have a free pass from fans to makes as few improvements as possible and regardless of how few they make, it will be an acceptable number to people who say "IDC about grafiks or gamplay I jus want more fallout!!"

And it's OK to want more of a game you love, it's not OK to give a free pass to the people making the game as it will just lead to further homogenization based on previous titles until you get a series like COD which rarely innovates until they finally switched things up with Advanced Warfare.

Don't you want the series you love to improve?

I'm sure you do, and you can still enjoy/respect their work while pushing them to do bigger and better things.

Managed to find one of the screenshots hosted elsewhere. Quote to see.

Dem bark textures.

We don't know that's not what trees would look like two centuries after total nuclear annihilation. Maybe trees are no longer able to grow naturally so they gain sentience, develop locomotion and survive by patching themselves with other, weaker trees, forming horrifying Frankenstein hybrids. That's just science, possibly.

How hungover do you think that texture artist was when they put that together and thought "good enough"?

In review

- crossgen development timeline
- same but updated engine
- conservative development and team size
- priority put on other aspects of the game
- artistic talent of the team

Anything else to explain it?

I dislike Bethesda and Zenimax for their hostile takeovers and their modern game output, but responsible AAA development should be commended.

My poor 770 :(

You think the 770 will have issues with the game? It's only the slightest bit below the 780 that the have for the recommended specs. I can't imagine it's going to suffer much at all if you're running around 1080p.

I have a 770 as well and never once felt like it was going to hold me back with Fallout 4.

Im sure their investment will pay off

I mean this discussion didnt keep me from buying the game...

I hope i dont regret it. I suppose i fall into the same idea of forgiving consumer.

Its not like im not critical.. Its just that i still see enough merit from the footage to warrant a purchase
