Halo 5: Guardians Smashes Record with Biggest Halo Launch (games/hardware) in History

Fom the article:

Where do you see that Microsofts PR statement treats it any differently? It doesn't say sold to customers or anything like that. I read it as $400 Million worth of Halo 5 games and bundles sold to retailers. Doesn't matter anyway.

Well, either way I think it's safe to say Halo is far from dead. If MS hadn't fucked up the Xbox image and system so much, it would have done much better.

Are they counting those Halo controllers they are selling as well? If so whoever comes up with good numbers for Microsoft is a genius.

Oh yea, it would have to be controllers, not the game itself, the awesome OST, or the special edition console that comes bundled with the game. We know Microsoft spins, but let's not try to pretend as if there isn't a whole lot of spin going on in this very thread also.

Thats some clever PR spin. I guess it's good they were able to put a big headline out there like that but without telling us the actual sales. I guess we are going to have to wait for NPD and the leaks to give us an idea on how it really did. Skirting around with those numbers combining this and that doesn't say diddly.

I'm even inclined to think '...and hardware' is talking about all Xbox One hardware sold that week. Halo bundle or not. That comma could literally make it mean anything.

These PR guys deserve their paycheck.

Why can't people just say "Congratulations on the awesome sales" and move on?

Why do you have to know 100% of the sales details to know if did good? Did they play on PR a bit sure, but it doesn't change the fact they made a ton of money and the game is a success, just say congrats and move on holy hell.

From the last page:

There is nothing sad about wanting to know about sales. At the end of the day it's still a gaming industry and knowing sales numbers helps get a better understanding of what consumers want and how the market is doing. Just because one is fascinated with numbers and reviews doesn't mean they want a game to fail.

People want numbers, not blatant attempts at obfuscation.

Which is so ironic yet enjoyable to sift through lol.

It really is the best playing Halo. I hope the added content is significant. If it is I think the population will remain healthy and continue with solid sales, but as it stands the multiplayer content is lacking. The problem is they tried to diversify multiplayer to give more variety, but in turn they ended up watering down pre-existing Halo playlists and maps for those playlists, so if you don't like all of them it definitely feels like there isn't enough.

Since I don't like breakout that much and Warzone isn't my thing, I'm left with like 5 maps and very few playlists. Team Slayer has been a staple of Halo multiplayer since the beginning, and content wise it's the weakest of any launch Halo game, which is saying a lot (Reach and Halo 4 were pretty weak as well). They say they're going to continue with a bunch of new content/playlists and I remain hopeful, but they also said they were launching with 21 maps, and that's a huge stretch.

You're seriously grasping at straws now.

I just see sharks in the water, hoping, wishing, praying, for numbers so that they can confirm what we already know (and then act "concerned" about it): halo isn't as popular as it used to be.

Sadly, you'll all just have to live with the knowledge, that it's still a cash cow...

No ranking or leaderboards in game to show the actual number right?

No population play list numbers?

Clever girl

Sources tell me there are only 3 people playing halo5 right now.

Uhh what? He's asking a question and why exactly can't all of those things be included?

That's the entire point of the PR. To obfuscate things. Hence, people trying to figure it out.

They knew from the Halo 4 population decline grave dancing that they would never show population numbers again, no matter how well it did.

Because according the narrative in that thread the game bombed.

That's totally false.
The only narrative there is that the game underperformed in the UK compared to previous mainline titles in the series.
This PR not only confirms it's true but that it also applies worldwide.
It's not so hard to understand, the game still sold really well in absolute terms.
But it's fascinating that the fans of the series are trying to deny the evidence... afterall it's not like the game gets better or worse depending on sales. The things are separated.

Lol. Gotta love any thread MS-related.

I wonder what has the biggest spin; the MS PR dept. promoting the sales or the Console warriors downplaying them?

there is no numbers to downplay :/

Well, I bet it's above 6 million units, and most of that in the USA. (400 million / 60 us per game = 6.66 million)

And people were saying Halo was dead in USA and uncharted 4 would beat it easily. Haha.

Microsoft just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about game sales culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Movies where you can become successful by posting revenue. If you screw someone over in games sales, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the neogaf posters, after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase any software for their hardware, nor will they purchase any of Microsoft games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Microsoft has alienated an entire forum with this move.

Microsoft, publicly apologize and release sales numbers for Halo 5 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

What were the XB1 numbers WW when Titanfall launched? I know it was around 2.5 mil in the U.S putting it's NPD attach rate at about 40%.

If it was 4 million, that would break records and they'd be shouting from the rooftops about that number.

Here's my estimated math IMO... Either way its good for NPD and other things..

175mil / $500(avg # factoring in consoles + controllers) = 350k of a blend of consoles/ controllers

225mil/ $75(avg # factoring in standard, LE and CE editions and discounts offered over the last few weeks.) = 3 million copies sold approx.

If the above is true (speculation), then id say that's pretty damn good IMO.

The job of marketing is to make your product appear in a positive light no matter the circumstance. As someone going into marketing I am not being sarcastic when I say if that was the case whoever is coming up with these numbers and press releases is a genius.

Um, the money earned from Halo 5 also came from hardware, which includes the LE bundle, Locke themed controller, Master Chief themed controller, and Halo themed headset. In addition, on the software side, there were also the deluxe and collector's editions.

This was the perfect sequel to the UK thread.

Eagerly awaiting a final episode of the Halo Sales Wars trilogy.

Episode 1: A New Release
Episode 2: The PR Strikes Back
Episode 3: Return of the NPD

Truly, Halo is the Star Wars of video games.

I agree with this statement. MS has the best PR in the business. I can't wait to see the actual numbers follow by the same people saying that sales don't matter because it made 400 million in profits.

Emmm they include 500$ bundles, controllers and all the Halo related accessories in the revenues figure.
It's not 400m/60$ per game :P

Man, if Halo 5 sold less than Titanfall i, personally, think that's a giant failure.

I still think they are only talking about attach rate on that sentence. Just to point that lot's of XB1 owners bought the game.

Do we have Titanfall 1st week sales?

Gonna be harder to have a better attach rate than Titanfall given the amount of consoles out there during each game's launch.

"I need those numbers so I can use them to help strengthen my argument that Halo is dying and should be dead!!! WHY DON'T YOU RELEASE THE NUMBERS!"

You all sound like Republicans wanting Obama's birth certificate.

and you sound like someone jumping to conclusion for someone asking an honest question

everything isn't a console war here

If they are counting consoles too someone deserves a raise. Thats genius.

I couldn't agree more. Regardless of the tactic employed to create the illusion of increased popularity, you simply have to applaud their PR guys. They always outdo themselves.
