Yes, the mental trauma of being exposed to a different language that her brain that can't process or comprehend.
I mean, they could be talking about her. They could be insulting her. They could be sitting there lording their superiority over her and she'd be none the wiser. She did what any hot blooded American would do. Demand they speak the goddamn American language as the goddamn constitution demands.

One time, in BC, on the Skytrain, there were these two older African gentlemen just sitting around and conversing in their language. I couldn't pinpoint what it was, and there were these two white kids nearby. No one else cared, but these guys started making those stereotypical whistle and African language sounds and laughing at them, and they did it loud enough that the people around them including the gentlemen heard and they stopped. So rude and disrespectful, I was only like 18 on the way to class, these guys seemed like they were 22. I was full of anger but I didn't do anything. I still think about it to this day that by not stepping up to call them out on it, I ememboldened them, same for the other people who were like white, Chinese etc. I wonder how these people would like being in South Korea or Taiwan just working, chatting with friends in English and some guy comes and smashes them because they aren't speaking the language of the country.
I dunno. I'd think immediately jumping to that conclusion without even looking up the area is pretty unreasonable.

You can see a steady progression over 8 years, going from speeding to DWI, to misdemeanor assault, to petty theft, etc. This lady was really going places.

I'm not trying to make excuses. She's an awful, shitty person regardless. And as someone with a mental illness, I'd offending myself by blaming her actions entirely on that.
I just feel like shitty beliefs alone aren't enough to send someone over the edge to do something like this. If they were, we'd see far more Fox News viewers lashing out like this. But you get the right combination of shitty beliefs and mental illness, and something like this happens.
I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong. But I just can't wrap my head around somebody fully sane doing something like this. And I say this as somebody who's been on both sides. I've been the mentally ill, violently lashing out person, and I like to think I'm currently relatively sane person with the help of medications. I just can't imagine the current me doing the things that non-medicated me did.

There's a friend of a friend of mine who got the "this is America! Speak English!" treatment once.

The passage of time won't help to curb this attitude. This woman learned it from somewhere and you bet that if she has kids, she passed it down to them. I remember this one time I was in a train on my way to a city (New Haven I think) in Connecticut, I was with 2 other friends, the 3 of us from Peru, so naturally, we were speaking Spanish. All of a sudden this woman in the back started yelling at us but we didn't really make out what she was saying, so we just ignored her and luckily she got off the train in the next one or 2 stops.
Back then, I didn't know hate crime was a thing, so reading about this kind of stuff now and thinking in retrospect is a little bit scary.
With that said, I also remember other instances where people were really nice when they noticed I was from abroad and spoke both languages (Spanish and English) just fine. There was one lady I met while on a lift ride in VT, she heard me speak Spanish because a friend called me on the phone, so then we started talking and she wanted to practice her Spanish with me. Good times.
How widespread is shit like this in the US anyway? It's really scary to think you can get assaulted on because someone doesn't like languages other than English.

There are tensions. My dad still lives up there and I swear there isn't a phone call or two where he's not talking about something happening with a Somali person or a Somalian did something wrong. It's as bad as the Hmong population. Then again, I am getting the story painted by an admitted racist, so maybe it's not as tense as he makes it seem like. Also, the Somalians have a monopoly on public taxis I've heard and so a lot tension from dad probably comes from that (my dad also is a driver).
I know of rednecks like pops who call the Mall of America the "Mall of Africa" because of all the Somalians and just general African-Americans there.
That said, the Cities are totally cool with the gays. My wife's best friend is helping me try and convince my wife to move back to MN so he can go up there with us and get away from the Southern bigots (to exchange them for some "not as bad Northern bigots").
