If the settlements are optional, what's the point of building them?

Sorry for the dumb question, I've been keeping myself kind of blind.

I know that based on my playtime in Skyrim that it's safe to describe almost anything in the game as optional. You'll do the stuff that interests you. Gameplay-wise settlements can get you crafting resources and vendors that sell items, or you just might want to build something creative for fun.

Ran into a bug as well. Right at the beginning. Really no spoilers but for hardcore people I figured I'd spoiler tag it.

Where I would get stuck on the vault door when I was leaving and couldn't move, press escape, or open the pip boy. Alt-F4'd it; Reloaded it, and same thing happened. Third time worked when I didn't edit my name and kept it what it is.

I believe the resolution is the same.

Neither are particularly great performance wise, but the XBO has quite apparent drops to 0fps, and DF recommend that the PS4 version is the better of the two.

So I couldn't see any mention of this in other posts... Vysnc is enabled by default, it's not possible to disable it through game options (nor via the launcher). Disabling vysnc via nvidia console also seems to unlock the game speed, making it run in ultra-fast mode!

So, great, game speed is tied to fps once it goes over 60fps or something? The mouse lag and screen judder (which seems like a gamebryo hangover) is not very nice. I haven't tried adaptive vysnc but I assume it'd be unpleasant, with occasional unlocks to the game speed.

Im playing since Friday and dont like the whole settlement feature at all. Ive lost my lone wanderer feeling and although it might be completely optional the game presents it to you with maybe the first sidequest you do...
