Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

For those messing around with shadow distance, I want to share my findings and current settings.

I was able to put the shadow distance up to 20000 (Ultra) and keep 60 FPS by doing the following.

Fallout4Prefs.ini (set to read-only)
  • fDirShadowDistance=20000
  • fShadowDistance=20000
  • iDirShadowSplits=2

*it looks like iDirShadowSplits makes shadows blurry until you get close, which may be distracting
*also experiment by dropping the shadow distance value to find your own happy place

I also changed the world FOV back to 80 as per jorimt's suggestions above. It does make a difference but of course that means a FOV of 80.... Currently trying to find a way to make it stick with .ini commands, but I think it would be:

Fallout4.ini (read-only)
[Display]
fDefaultWorldFOV=80
fDefault1stPersonFOV=90

Put god rays on Low with everything else at Ultra.

I also used these tweaks found on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3sdyu7/the_old_ini_tweaks_still_work/

Put these under [General] in Fallout4.ini (set to read-only)

uInterior Cell Buffer=24
uExterior Cell Buffer=288
bUseThreadedBlood=1
bUseThreadedMorpher=1
bUseThreadedTempEffects=1
bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1
bUseThreadedAI=1
bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1
bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1
iNumHWThreads=8

^I can confirm these made a difference of about 5-6 fps.

My specs:
4770k @4.0
MSI GTX980 no OC
16mb RAM
Win 10
Latest nVidia drivers
Borderless full screen

The area I tested was from the catwalks at the Corvega factory looking North (I think) over Lexington. Before these tweaks my frames tanked to 42 and everywhere in-between while finalizing the settings above, but now they're holding at 60 without compromising shadow distance. I'm going to play more tonight to see how it holds up.

EDIT: made it to Diamond City and the frames tank again. Back to the drawing board.

Hey, anyone else having issues with audio channels being inverted? When I load the game the audio is coming in fine, but after going between areas a few times the direction of audio inverts, and it's bugging the hell out of me. Anyone know any fixes other than restarting from desktop? I know it's not my soundcard doing this, all my tests of it come out fine.

I just don't have any resemblance of directional audio no matter what I do.

I'm getting solid framerates at 4K with everything (including Godrays and Shadow) pegged at Ultra, but I capped at 30FPS by:

1) Setting display mode to be 30hz when Fallout 4 launches via RivaTuner
2) Setting iFPSClamp=30 under [General] and iPresentInterval=0 under [Display] in fallout4.ini
3) Turning Vsync=On (Smooth) and Triple Buffering=On in NVidia Control Panel.

Hardware:
980 Ti (x3, but not able to run in SLI right now; thanks Bethesda)
i7-5930K overclocked to 4.2GHz (6 cores)
32GB of RAM

I am not in love with the 30FPS or anything but it's not stuttering or slowing down or tearing and the visual fidelity is as good as the game can do, so I am all set. Will hopefully get up to 60fps when and if Bethesda gets around to adding SLI support, but we'll see. I'm testing this in areas that were really awful when aiming for 60 before and everything is butter, so I'm encouraged.

Anyone running the game at 4k? If so, are you able to max out the settings and maintain 60fps?

Thanks!
That's going to be impossible until SLI support is enabled. See my post above yours for getting a locked 30. It runs really nice at 4K/Ultra if you do those steps.

Stutter free game for me required:

1. Disabling ingame vsync in falloutprefs
iPresentInterval=0

2. Enabling exclusive fullscreen mode in falloutprefs
bBorderless=0
bTopMostWindow=0
bMaximizeWindow=0
bFull Screen=1

3. Enable Nvidia Vsync (not adaptive).

4. 60 fps RTSS limit for a bit less mouse input lag.

This is if you can run 60 fps all the time. If you can't, then remove the RTSS limit, or set it to 61, and enable adaptive vsync. If you have gsync then just step 1 and 2 will suffice. Also disable mouse accel in fallout4.ini bMouseAcceleration=0 , it adds a stupid amount of mouse lag.

This tweak is a must for everyone and should be added to the OP.

Wait..what? It has no SLI support as of yet? WOW!

Yeah... I've hit my limit with SLI. When it works, it's awesome. But when it doesn't, it really, really huts. So I just went ahead and just sold my GTX 680s and bought myself a brand new Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 :)

Pretty sad, huh? :(

Anyone have experience with how long it typically takes for SLI patches to come out?

I have been using SLI for years and usually the game ready drivers have SLI support. It is more odd that a game launches without SLI support or proper SLI support. I would say if it does not do it all right now, perhaps in a week or two depending on Nvidia and Bethesda. Usually big games like this they get it working pretty quick, but really shocked something this big and they did not have SLI ready at the get go.

How do I make it so that the mouse isn't dependent on the framerate? I mean, I'm getting like 20-40 fps ingame but when I'm in navigating the menu, I would love to have some accuracy...

Any one else having this issue running the game at 4K? Only happens at that resolution. Using a 780ti doesn't seem to be a memory limit issue or performance issue. Game runs fine the bottom half of the screen is just super dark.

VERY interesting. I am anxiously wainting your final report.

Won't be able to really play until later but after my post I ran around Cambridge and decided to lower the shadow distance value a bit to 17000, which would be halfway between High and Ultra. Personally I feel that the Medium setting (3000...!) is pathetic and overkill just to get steady frames in the city, so its all about finding a good compromise in the .ini.

I also decided to change iDirShadowSplits back to '3' (so iDirShadowSplits=3) because the shadows were blurry until I was right on top of them. The area around the Cambridge police station seems to drop slightly when I first enter a section, then it smooths back out to 60fps. Might have something to do with those other settings I found on reddit but I have no idea at this point. I haven't made it to Diamond City but I seriously need to just go there and stop getting distracted lol.

That doesn't make any sense. I have a 2GB GTX 770, and an i5 3570k (4.2 GHz overclocked), and only 8GB system memory, and I've been 60 fps for most of the intro area and the wasteland. I just used the autodetected settings. Have you tried that?

Also, I'm Windows 7 64-bit home premium. What OS and driver version are you using? Have you done any manual overrides in the nVidia control panel that might affect things?

I'm using Windows 10 64 bit. I have the latest gameready drivers from nvidia. I haven't made any changes in the nvidia control panel. I am starting to think I have a problem with my system.

edit: I used autodetect settings, but the intro ran very poorly.

I have promised myself not to actually play the game until the end of the year, but I did want to see what the performance would be like on my system. The game autodetected to "Low" settings. My laptop's specs are:

i7-4720HQ (quad core, 2.6 GHZ but can reach 3.6 GHz)
GTX 970M (with 3GB)
8GB RAM
SSD
1920x1080 screen

However, I decided to change all the settings, setting just about everything to "High" (with the exception of Texture Quality, set to "Ultra", and God Rays, set to "Low"). That still resulted in a smooth 60 fps (some drops to 55 fps) all the way through the intro area, inside and outside. So...I'm not sure why the autodetection was so low. *shrug*

The reddit tweak posted earlier has helped me considerably in cities(Lexington, for example). I am maintaining a solid 60 now even in those areas.

Also I lowered my FOV back to default since a poster above me pointed out how fucked up raising the FOV messes with your performance.

I'm back to Ultra settings now(with the exception of God Rays and shadows), and so far from my testing tonight I haven't had any hitches.

Still some micro stutter, but I'm not noticing as much so it may be improved? Impossible to say. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the results and glad I stayed glued to this thread today while I was at work. I plan to play a bunch tonight now that I [hopefully] won't have to worry about abysmal frame drops.

This right here helped me more than anything else.

Using a 560 TI and i5-2310, 1080-60 FPS on medium (and one or two on high) settings.

I'll be shocked if you guys with much more powerful set ups than me don't see an increase in performance.
Yo, I need this - but when I click to download (manually), I get this error:

The site has run in to a problem, please look at the error message below...

Your IP has been registered downloading this file over 50 times. In an effort to stop bandwidth leeching bots you cannot download a file more than 50 times. The restriction will be lifted in 3 hours.

50 times? What the fuck?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered...

I'm using Ultra texture resolution but some textures will load at VERY low quality, like N64 quality (maybe like 5% of the textures only though) if I turn away and look back at them it sometimes goes to the high resolution version. Anyone experience this or have a suggestion?

I have a i7 and GTX 760 and am using Nvidia Inspector to cap the frame rate at 40 fps for a smooth experience. Other than this bug its been running great!

Can someone please tell me how to lock the game at 45fps without getting any stutter? Sorry if I missed it somewhere else in the thread.

You'll get a stutter at 45 FPS unless you have Gsync or a 90 hz monitor. You don't want to lock a game at an FPS that doesn't multiply into your monitor's refresh rate evenly.

You can use Rivatuner to create custom FPS locks, just use the + button and navigate to the EXE.

Cant wait for all of the mods that fix the building stuff. Its kinda clunky. You cant really see anything when youre placing giant prefabs. And things dont snap on a rotation. So when youre building walls, you can only build them from left to right, it doesnt snap at a 90 degree angle. Also, when you tear down the ruined houses, it leaves the foundation. but nothing you can build snaps to the foundation. So if youre trying to build a house on the foundation its most likely not going to be lined up correctly.

I don't see what I'm doing wrong... I'm running everything on the lowest settings to see if I can at least get a smooth experience out in the wild - and it still feels like 30fps or so... the menus are fucking horrible to navigate in as well. Is my computer really that shit?

Everything on low
1080p

i5 750, 2.7 GHz
8gb
560 GTX ti

Also, why in the flying fucks are my advanced settings being defaulted each time I open the window? Like, I put everything on low, click "OK", then immediately go back and check - it's all defaulted. How the shit could this even be released?

Thanks a lot for linking to this, It helped tremendously in the places where my FPS tanked. Now I don't have to lock to 30fps to avoid a headache when I go to busy places :D

A friend of mine keeps getting super weird graphical glitches while he's playing, apparantly happens randomly after an hour or two of play. Anyone got any ideas? He doesn't want to redownload the game for obvious reasons.

i5 6600k (OC 4.3Ghz)
MSI AMD R9 390 (OC 1100Mhz)
16gb Ram
SSD

Running 1920x1080 Everything on Ultra Except God Rays on High

And Getting a solid 60fps about 90% of the time :)

Setting iFPSClamp in INI bugs a lot of things out. I had to remove it.

Yep! I put the pip boy on in Vault 111, pressed the button to open the vault, and the vault never opened. I was stuck! I even started completely over deleting all saves. Same thing! It was only after I removed the setting (iFPSClamp=60) completely that I was able to proceed. That setting bugs things out.

Almost identical specs to mine. I assumed that the game initially detected the intel gpu rather than the 970m, and therefore autodetected as low.

I had issue with this in all my games after a certain driver update, all borderless windowed game would get like 20 fps.

What they neglected to update users with is that they added a new option that has to be turned on in nvidia control panel for 3d settings. In the global settings change Monitor technology to G-Sync.

I also had make a fo4.exe profile to make sure it was set to that, and to make sure my fallout editing of configs for uncapping fps was set to read only because it will keep overwriting that field back to capped.

This will happen if the frame rate exceeds the refresh rate of the display. It's the intended behaviour with Gsync on together with Vsync off.

Hmm? Gsync is working for me.
I run full screen, v-sync off in fallout .ini and limit fps with Nvidia Inspector and everything is fine.
I dont have newest drivers though.

The point I'm making that with even with all these things in mind, with the latest Game Ready driver from Nvidia, gsync does not function in this game the way that it's supposed to.

Here are the parameters where I experience the issue.

Driver: 358.91
VSync off in Nvidia control panel under FO4 AND Universal setting set to off.
Monitor Technology set to G-Sync.
GTX 780/i7-4790K/ROG Swift

Frames don't exceed 70~ at a mix of ultra/high (low godrays) @ 1440p The game mostly hovers around 45-60 which would be perfectly playable with G-Sync... which only works on 358.87

It runs wonderfully for me, especially after I did those ini tweaks to get rid of the micro stutters.

AMD 8320 @ 4GHz
SLI GTX 760 (SLI disabled =( )
16GBs RAM
Windows 10

60 fps mostly, some drops into the upper 40s. High preset with god rays on low. When that SLI profile drops, I'm hoping to get a locked 60 fps.

In any other game I'd say that the GPU was dying, but you know...

Get him to run some stress tests or benchmarks to see if it happens anywhere else.
