Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

I spent hours trying to find the best FOV for my 21:9 monitor, and the default 80 is the best. Anything higher than 80 gives too much fisheye effect.

And somehow using vsync from nvidia driver is not working. I need to keep using the in game. =

Copying this over from the other thread, maybe someone can help:

What's up with the audio though? Enemies that are far away (often a few floors down or up) are as loud as those on the same floor, which is fucking with my sense of orientation. Feels like they're standing right beside me while they're far away. I'm playing with Headphones. Anyone else with this problem?

Which .ini file are you setting iPresentInterval=0 in? The right one is the fallout4.ini located in "my docs/my games/fallout4".

That's how the engine works. Shit's old.

Yes, I was completely screwed up running through a certain tower with enemies on multiple floors.

I just forced v-sync off in the nvidia control panel and now it feels as if I'm playing in fast forward. My fps is in the 100's. I've read the game's time/speed is tied to the framerate? Is there a way to limit it to 60?

Yep. It's really annoying.

Is it possible that behavior changed in Fallout 4 from Skyrim, however? I see mention of VMMap which might be one way to test it.

It might also be possible to benchmark a very specifiic location -- low framerate vs. high framerate changing only that parameter to see if it really makes a difference.

It's for Bink video files ie: nothing to do with memory allocation during gameplay. This quote is from someone who worked on Skyrim Script Extender(SKSE):

Please refrain from spreading misinformation.

iPreloadSizeLimit has absolutely nothing to do with cell buffers. It's for Bink files, there's normally only one of these in the entire game, and it occurs at the beginning of a new game. Allocating that much memory for a video that plays once is absolutely senseless. Any posts regarding this variable are absolutely a placebo effect.

Bethesda have always had issues with good audio. Had the same issue in Skyrim, it's not great in FO4 either.

The game runs flawlessly, heck it maintains 120 FPS(due to my refresh rate) however at times randomly in some areas that don't even look demanding it drops like a stone.

I check my afterburner and sure enough the core clock drops from 1480 to say 800 or so which plummets my fps so bad,GPU utilization is not this games strong suit it seems.

I think it totally ignores walls and just goes by distance to the audio source.

Looking through the windows when you're indoors and seeing the cheaply cobbled-together fake exteriors is one of my favorite things.

That is an issue if you run the game at higher than 60fps.

You need to lock the game to 60fps some how (either through a program or setting the desktop refresh rate to 60Hz in something like the Nvidia control panel).

It super sucks for me because while playing uncapped I rarely go below 60 (though I've not hit the cities where FPS plummets for many people) but when I cap I get the occasional drop under 60 which is weird.

Thank you. That's annoying, but easy enough to fix.

Performance is disappointing.

I have tried variety of graphical settings for next to no effect, but biggest issue for me is games HW utilisation. CPU hovers at ~75% average (FO4.exe), GPU maxes out at ~40% and RAM usage barely breaks 3GB. This results in very wildly fluctuating FPS with averages way, way below 60 when anywhere else than in bushes. I can at times even hit sub 20 FPS when exploring city area. Game is playable most of the time, but it's disappointing that my rig for some reason can't achieve 60FPS locked.

Any tips / help?

just played about with the settings again. i did this inside diamond city going up the elevator.

Shadow Distance is eating a lot of FPS. i don't know but i think it's bugged. no matter what settings i have if Shadow Distance is on high then it drops to as low as 37fps. i tried to turn down some settings to get some FPS back but no luck.

I can have textures on high/ultra, shadow quality on medium/high, decal/lighting on medium/high, god rays OFF/low, tessellation override or not (in CCC), SSAO on/off, sliders @ 50/100%. damn, it doesn't matter if the resolution is 720P/1080p. it really doesn't matter because it WILL drop to 37fps no matter what as long as Shadow Distance is on high.

i just hope it's bugged or they improve performance. the difference between medium/high is huge. i hate seeing shadows render right in front of me but it looks like I need to just deal with it. it's either keep it at high and play at 30fps or set it to medium and play at 40fps.

right now my settings are:

I'd maybe dial down your fade distances. In the optimization guide, they make an argument about diminishing returns above 50%. In fact, they straight up recommend 50%. Your lighting quality should probably be at either Medium or Ultra. High looks imperceptibly better than Medium, but does not introduce the benefit of Subsurface Scattering that Ultra offers. The guide suggests Medium.

EDIT: To answer your question directly about the shadows, the guide recommends High and the very least no matter what the costs. Everything looks so flat if it isn't at least High. I doubt tweaking the values I mentioned will adequately compensate for the jump from Medium shadows to High, but it will buy you a few frames for a minor (probably imperceptible) difference in IQ.

Remove the ifpsclamp=60 from the ini file.

Sounds like he needs to add that line. :p

Any quick way to darken the game? Don't see a gamma control and by default the game is fairly washed out for me, blacks are grayish during the day and at night it almost looks like using RGB Full on a limited display or vice versa.

This is probably already talked about at lenght in this thread, but

Are you sure you tried the game with the Godrays turned off? I had a problem that i couldn't deactivate them. If you had previously clicked on a presets other than low, than the godrays turn automatically back to "low" even if you set them at off. It looks OK while saving, but if you go to the settings again, it will be "low" again.

The solution would be to set the settings preset to low, start the game, quit and than change all the settings back to what you want them to be (without touching the presets again.)

Honestly, everyone who can't set the Godrays to Ultra should probably turn them off i think, the game runs a lot better and it looks 10x better than with Godrays (if not Ultra)
That weird pixelation around Chracters etc is also gone for me with them set to off.

Once again, could someone please tell me why the advanced settings default themselves as soon as I click on "OK"? It's infuriating that I can't change the settings...

Made sure none of the .ini files are set to Read-only?
How? I see both my .ini files right now... right click, properties?

Guess if you're asking, they are probably not set to read only. But just in case navigate to your Fallout 4 folder in My Documents and right click and check properties of both the .ini files Fallout4.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini and make sure Read-only isn't checked. You can also try deleting both of them and then relaunching the the game which should regenerate the files for you possibly clearing up your issue.

Just above your post, i described something similar with Godrays, maybe it extends to other settings as well? Try the same as i described in that post (set to low, start game, quit, change settings without clicking on another preset)

Oh, and of course make sure that you haven't set your ini's to read only.

Something is wrong there -- unless you are playing at a very high resolution. I have a similar setup but only have a i5 2500k at 3.3ghz. I stay at 60 most places with the exception of large cities (dips into the 40's.) Most everything on ultra except god rays (low) and shadow distance (high). I'm also playing at 1080p.

I'm running game on 1080p, I don't even want to know how garbage tier performance gets if I try downsampling. Godrays on low, rest are Ultra or High. Lowering settings has very little affect on performance so that has me thinking game gets CPU choked so hard. When exploring interior that are separate from overworld I get solid 60FPS, but overworld is very unstable when it comes to FPS.

In both, separate interiors and overworld game sucks at utilizing my GPU.

780 Ti. Absolutely everything maxed out. 1080p. Runs like a dream. Haven't had it dip below 60 yet but I've only been playing a few hours.

Removing mouse acceleration + fixing vertical sensitivity + changing fov to 90 + turning vsync off (iPresentInterval = 0) + activating borderless window = amazing.

I love it.

A friend of mine keeps getting super weird graphical glitches while he's playing, apparantly happens randomly after an hour or two of play. Anyone got any ideas? He doesn't want to redownload the game for obvious reasons.

Looks like a broken overclock or dying GPU.

For me, it really seems to boil down that the most disappointed people are the ones who are using monitors with refresh rates higher than 60hz. I know for me that's my main disappointment.

It seems like there are a half dozen different ways to disable v-sync and limit fps. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible and do it with an ini tweak.

ipresetinterval=0
ifpsclamp=30

Will adding these two lines to my ini file limit my fps to 30? I'm getting bounces from 35 indoors to 60 outside, but I'd really rather just have it consistent as the fluctuations are really jarring.

Not on their own. You need to also use a frame limiter like rivatuner to lock the display to 30fps.

Im on a 780ti as well, your FPS will probably take a dramatic hit as soon as you get to the main city area around
Diamond City
(mine did).

Anyone know how to get fraps to properly adjust to my TV resolution? Right now the game is on 1920x1080 and every time I run fraps it runs off screen, I can barely see it.

This is more of a fraps question than fallout lol.
