Fallout 4 |OT| Atom Bomb Baby

I'm finally home, so I sunk in an hour today. Started out impressed with the player character face editing (works really well IMO), then found myself bored shitless by the opening and pretty much everything in the early game. One hour in I quit and watched a movie.

I dunno. I know I'm being a sourpuss, and I fully intend to restart once I'm not forced to play on my TV monitor (basically once my PC monitor comes back from repair), and I don't want to shit up the thread with superb negativity, but the opening of the game had that same issue I had with Fallout 3 and Skyrim; every character so far is immediately forgettable, and spouts drab, unnatural dialogue. Like everything is just (and I know this will be the unpopular opinion) so lifeless and boring.

Playing in my comfort zone (see monitor) and a better mood will elevate my opinion I'm sure. And it's super dumb to judge a 50+ hour open world game on the first hour with hardly any exploring. But yeah; early impressions = butts.

The shooting felt pretty good though. And despite weirdass fucking stuttering that makes no sense at all given I'm playing @1080p on a fucking 6GB 980Ti, I actually think it looks pretty decent. Obviously rough animations, inconsistencies in the assets, and other jank you expect in a huge open world RPG. But man, sometimes I feel people forget how Skyrim looked, or gloss over the vanilla look due to mods. This is massively improved on basically every single front.

im quite a ways into the game and the most damning criticism i can levy (aside from trash writing and dialogue system) is how perfunctory and unambitious the whole thing is. 7 years after fallout 3 and it plays so damn similarly at its core.

First up I must be the biggest idiot in the world, reached level 10 without realizing you didn't need to max out your stars to go lower in the perks...

Second, I just met Nick and Im in love already, such a cool character.

This has probably beend asked a thousand times but, where can I find a ton of aluminum? Adhesive hasn't been too bad as every one of those red toolboxes seems to contain Duct Tape or Wonderglue.

it's all over the place. not only are there aluminum cans littered everywhere, a bunch of other things break down into it as well.

my modded weapons are so fucking beastly. I cnt imagine the next game without this system, I love it

anyone found any alien stuff in the game? theres a loading screen tooltip with one of those alien guns from the Fallout 3 Mothership Zeta DLC

I actually feel like Melee would be pretty fun in this game looking at some of the perks and unique weapons I've picked up. Never even considered it in previous Fallout games.

Huh, maybe I won't restart then. I was really considering it since I have barely found any melee weapons.

Does anyone have a list of high value junk. I am constantly low on oil, circuits, copper, aluminum, crystal, etc.

Usually anything heavy has more than one component. Just go by visual reference: if it looks big chances are it will contain more than one component, and some of the most rare ones.
Oil is frequent but comes along with pretty heavy stuff, from 3 to 5 kg: gas canisters, coolant.
There's always a Red Rocket in every mid-to-big settlement and they have plenty of stuff with oil in it.

---

30 hours and the Aquaboy perk has been useless until now ;_; In Skyrim I found a submerged dungeon pretty much at the start of the game and plenty of places to store stuff underwater, here? I've found ONE suitcase.
Also, FUCK Mirelurks. And Ghouls. And Gunners. And Boatflies. And Radscorpions.
This game is awesome XD

How do I get the damn dog to stop following me? I have the alone Warrior perk, but the dog won't leave me alone!

Apparently Lone Wanderer Perk works with the Dog as a companion. You still get the Carry Weight bonus and other bonuses as well. Dog I guess is not seen as a normal companion like everyone else.

Otherwise you have to just talk to him and send him to one of your settlements.

Is it possible to take a mod from one weapon to another at the workbench? If so I can't figure out how to do it! I want to move a night vision scope from a sniper I picked up to the sniper I crafted.

There is, but you need to make a 'new' mod to put the old mod into your inventory. If you scrap it as-is you lose everything.

If you put a regular glow sight scope or whatever, you'll get the night vision scope in your inventory.

Aquaboy/girl has been so useful for me. Quests that require you to go into the water or just exploring without coming up for air or to avoid radiation is amazing.

This game is quite overwhelming. If I store all junk in the workbench does that convert the stuff to the raw materials automatically?

So is anyone else's Thicket Excavations area a place where it seems like Bethesda just gave up and went home?

The whole place is a huge glitchy sinkhole ... lol

Which quest is this? I have done Corvega. Is it the
Cambridge Police Station?

Yes.

Yeah, that's the wrong way to do it!!!

Actually, it only applies to junk items though correct? Otherwise, the game might end up scrapping a weapon or armor piece you were simply storing for later. If that's the case, it doesn't change things that much for me, since the weapon/armor scrapping is always what takes the longest anyway.

No but if it needs them it breaks them down automatically.

Just junk through right?

Just started playing. Is there no level cap in Fallout 4? I remember it was 30 in Fallout 3. I am just curious because I don't want to spend to much time min-maxing my SPECIAL at the begning if I can just eventually unlock everything. Thanks.

Yes, but only as needed. So unless it's going to be actually used in the creation of a mod it will just remain as is in the work bench.

There is no level cap, but I'm like 35 hours in and only lvl 32 or so. You definitely need to think about your level ups. I'm still planning and thinking about where I want to put future points.

For all intents and purposes it's automatic, you don't have to worry about breaking them down.

Although it's nice that it doesn't break it down immediately because some crafting recipes require bits of unbroken junk.

If I send away a companion with a bunch of custom shit on him/her, will they still have it the next time I see them?

I got Piper dressed up as Grognak the Barbarian so I'm hoping she stays that way lol

There isn't a level cap, but you aren't really going to eventually unlock everything without cheating either.

Yes.

If you put an armor piece or weapon in the workbench inventory it won't be used as junk. To get components from weapons and armor you need the perk and you need to go to a weapon workbench or armour one and in there you can specifically scrap specific armor/weapons. So yeah don't worry about the game scrapping your weapons and armor, those two you have to do manually.

make sure you keep an eye on your pre-war money though, the game started breaking it down for supplies when i could've been selling it for sweet caps.

Seemed ok to me, finished the mission fine, although the first time I did it, a legendary mirelurk (my first legendary ever) appeared and I died, and never got him to return again on subsequent reloads :-(

I was getting bad glitches in Corvega, whole rooms were glitching, and I was warping all over the place.

Correct, you have to actually scrap weapons and junk with a different button press.

So I asked last night but I guess no one was around. Wondering if anyone knows if I make a supply lines with my settlements if the settlers I assign to it can die (like through ambushes and what not). So I have to make sure those settlers are properly equipped?

Also, just as a side note, I made an automatic energy weapon and wow is that thing powerful, even without perks to guns. I need more energy cells

Edit: meant supply lines

Is the righteous authority laser rifle you obtain considered automatic? Im guessing no, but being a laser rifle im not sure. Im just curious if my 40% gunslinger (think thats the name) perk applies to it. The one where the extra % damage goes towards non automatic rifles.

What? Holy shit, I wish I'd known that. Kind of makes sense considering some of the bonuses you can get with other companions. I wish you could have one companion + Dogmeat.

I've read that they can. I've kept my supply lines short though and haven't had any problems yet.

i havent used my perks for the last 7 levels lol.

That's a bit much. I've gone as far as 4, but I generally keep 1 or 2 on hand just in case I need to bump something up or I'm unsure of where I want to put multiple points like increasing a SPECIAL to gain access to a new Perk I find I'll need.

Correct, you have to actually scrap weapons and junk with a different button press.

I don't know how it's done with a controller, but with mouse and keyboard it's tedious and clunky as hell to do.

You drop everything, then as you select the item, you hit R to bring up the scrap prompt. Then you either have to hit enter (which means you would take your hand off the mouse to hit it for each and every single item) or you drag the mouse over to the enter prompt and click it. For an item or two no big deal. But for an inventory full?

Who the hell came up with that?

Played some more of the story yesterday instead of just wandering around. Inevitably ran into locations on my way to missions and got sidetracked.

Fought a Legendary Feral Ghoul though and got some legendary arms that have a 10% chance to disarm a melee attacker. Couple radiation storms, freaked me out at first. Found a few more Fusion Cores but only have one Power Armor

Also already addicted to Psycho and Buffout, probably need to get that fixed (; But I have no clue where to find a doctor yet.

Anyone else find it strange that they re-used a lot of songs from the previous games?

No, and they seemed to have reused a lot of assets in general. I miss the radio mod though from NV. It had an amazing assortment of fitting music.

My first legendary drop is one that I probably won't ever give up, although I'm not sure exactly what the gains are. It's an arm piece that regenerates AP faster.

For weapons and armor, you can scrap them from their respective workbenches from the mod menu (X or Square on controller). Junk should all just get tossed inside the building workstation with the "transfer all junk" button.

You can also use the 'E' key instead of 'Enter.'

yes, but you can scrap those from the menu at armor/weapon stations. you don't need to drop them

You're doing it wrong, there is no need to drop anything.

Junk > Transfer to bench while in bench menu.

Weapons and Armour > Scrap while in bench menu.

So who is the best companion in the game? I currently have:

Dogmeat
Piper
Preston
Supermutant guy
Curie (she has the best dialogue, I think)
Valentine

Anyone else find it strange that they re-used a lot of songs from the previous games?
Yes, very disappointing. Good thing the ambient music is better than FO3.

Sounds a heck of a lot better than my legendary drop. I'd love that, I'm a huge user of VATS.
