Dragon Quest 7 and 8 for 3DS show up on Amazon [Update: Confirmed]

Is the opening of Dragon Quest VII just as long as the original? I remember it taking a few hours before you even get into the first random battle.

It's sped up and changed significantly. Probably would still take about an hour to the first battle.

I kinda missed that first puzzle dungeon.

I'm glad these are both coming, but man, I don't know if I have the energy to do another full runthrough of both, especially since so many other games have been announced for next year. DQ7 was a massive timesuck (definitely 100+ hours for me), but at the same time I'm interested in seeing how the remake has changed things. DQ8 is one of my favorites, but I'm kinda content with my PS2 experience and I don't know if the 3DS version plays that much different, besides the speed / visible enemy improvements.

If only I had more 100-hour blocks of time to play these, Bravely Second, Xenoblade, FE, etc.

Ah that's cool , the first time I played it on ps1 I was eager to fight since it was at a time the first new Mainline Dragon Quest since 4 on NES.

Huge news!!! I can't wait to play VII for the first time and a great excuse to replay VIII! Now we just wait and see if they bring DQ Builders to the U.S.

I loved the long opening to the game. The first dungeon is one of my favorites for that very same reason. It had really fun puzzles and I loved the atmosphere.

When you finally get to your very first battle with slimes, the long wait was all worth it. :P

I'm not sure how much of it was cut. Perhaps Aeana or someone else who played the Japanese version could shed some light on that.

Man these people are slow. Last time I played 7 it only took 61 hours. Mostly because I know where everything is.

Maybe I accidentally have the world speedrun record for this game?

First time through DQ 7 for me was over 100 hours. Loved the job system in that game. 67 hours is actually pretty quick, it's a huge game.

I liked the beginning of the DQ 7, but I could see how some people would not like the pacing. I think it took me almost 3 hours the first time I played just to get to the first island.

Geez, could you save in between at least?

On 3DS, you should be able to just put the system into standby at least...

The time it took you on a replay doesn't really compare to the time it took other people to play it through the first time. I usually beat the game in about 45-50 hours these days, but my first playthrough was a fair bit longer. And my first playthrough of the 3DS version was 66 hours.

One thing that used to slow me down in DQ7 was missing one piece to unlock a new area. Do they make it a little easier if you're stuck getting pieces?

Holy....I never thought this would happen! VIII is one of my favorite games of all-time, I sunk untold hours into it, but VII is the one I'm really excited for. I owned and played the original version of it but only got a few hours into it.

This is the kind of thing I was thinking about:

Not sure whether the PS2 screenie there is from an emu or not and thus higher res then it should be, but it's not that I'm talking about - there's clearly content on the ps2 that isn't on the 3ds version - grass, trees etc.

Was this put back in the final version?

Unfortunately, it seems the 3DS version uses assets from the mobile version, which was re-made from the ground up in Unity.

It blows my mind that I'll be able to have DQ8's enormous, gorgeous overworld on the go, in the palm of my hand. So pumped for it and DQ VII to come over. VII is the only DQ besides X that I haven't played yet, so I'm looking forward to it too.

DQ8 is quite possibly my favorite RPG of all time, and it was the game that got me into the series. I can't recommend it enough to RPG fans, including those who haven't played any DQ yet.

So...is Nintendo or Square publishing this? I imagine it's Square, because they obviously want to bring it out on mobile at some point with the new localization. I doubt Nintendo would pay for localization and publishing with 7. Also, since Square published DQ Heroes in the west, it'd be bizarre for it to be Nintendo again.

I beat dq8 and it is one of my memorable gaming experiences ever. I'll just remain content with those memories and not play it again.

I've never played 7 and I am really looking forward to that one on the 3ds. Is there any reason I would even consider playing the ps1 version over this one?

Nintendo, you can doubt it but they clearly opened their wallet.

But as Aeana pointed out Square Enix coordinates the translations themselves so they can reuse them.

Dq8 world is just ok, now xenoblade on 3ds is something crazy.

Two games in one year?

I know they need to get them out before the 3DS truly craters, but they surely could have planned the schedule better than this.

I really dont remember seeing DQ7 on the Playstation,up here in Canada anyway..probably was at the end of the PS1 and in very limited quantity...?

If Nintendo would just release DQ 1 & 2, and DQ3 from the Game Boy on 3DS as digital downloads I would be able to play DQ 1 through 9 all on one device! THAT'S NUTS!

I wouldn't mind a 1-3 collection using the mobile versions released as a cart for 3DS either!

I hope early summer 2016 doesn't turn out like Yakuza 5's summer 2015~

2016: DQ VII, DQ VIII
2017: DQ XI, DQM J3

I can dream if I wanna.

It was announced via Gamestop magazine on when to pre-order. Even pre-ordered it at EB Games at that time. The game came out when PS2 was out, so got lost in the shuffle to FF X.

First time I played DQVII it was around 86 hours, I spent a lot of time getting classes and skills which takes some time. The game itself is exaggerated for its length and I think it flows just fine, has a ton of places to visit and the party chat is great. I cannot wait to play the 3DS version

3DS is far more colourful than any other version of VIII, I wonder why.

Unfortunately, it seems the 3DS version uses assets from the mobile version, which was re-made from the ground up in Unity.

Some stuff like the grass was cut down but the game assets were not entirely remade for mobile; it was more a port.

Dragon Quest finally came back west.

EDIT: So...gotta ask. Are VII PS1 and 3DS so different that its worth playing both? Similar to FFIV SNES and FFIV DS or FFIII NES and FF III DS?

Yes, VII is a complete 3D remake, it changes a lot too.

Edit: Not from scratch but VIII has absolutely loads of new content too though.

I'm definitely going to get DQ7 then once it finally lands. I've never played it because as far as I know it has never come out in Europe before on any platform.

I played DQ8 back in the day (I can't believe that was all the way back to the PS2) so might hold off for a while or at least until I get through DQ7.

Very exciting news anyway.

Yes, the 3DS version is more vibrant than the others. This means many textures feel different and the whole game is unique looking. I actually prefer the more vibrant look now, though at parts it gets a little saturated. The mobile version's colours and general aesthetic is actually closer to the PS2 original. It's just that the mobile version runs like poop. Also many effects missing the mobile version are actually in the 3DS version, especially the lighting.

It's a full 3D remake, but like most DQ remakes, very faithful to the original game.
