Yeah the dialogue system has been the only bummer for me so far. All the options are the same, basically, and the charisma checks usually are just 'pay me.' I don't think a voiced protagonist is a great fit for the Fallout universe.

I don't think having a voiced protagonist is the worst thing I just think the way they've done it is bad. There needs to be more dialogue right now your options are basically say yes, say yes sarcastically, say no and ask a question. There's no real room there to branch out and make your own character I think it will put a damper on playing through it again for me.

They also should have taken a leaf out of Bioware's book and had multiple character voices for the protagonist like in Inquisition.

I'm bored. Gonna uninstall the game and wait for some mods to dive back in. I don't expect modders to make it that much more role-playable (except for alt starts), and asking them to fix the dialogue system is absurd because the presentation is the least of its problems, but maybe something like a FO4 Wanderer's edition will make the game difficult in a more exhilarating way.

Right now playing it just feels like I'm simply going through the motions. It feels too much like FO3, it's like the same game but with better graphics and gunplay. It's just all too... Familiar, to be very exciting. I go through a dungeon more or less enjoying shooting things in the face, maybe find a new gun, do a boring quest, force my way through some dull dialogue, rinse and repeat.

Funnily enough, I seemed to get bored of it at around the 20-hour mark, which is how much I usually get out of a new Call of Duty game before it starts being boring because of the same-y same-y-ness.

So yeah. Goodbye for now, Fallout 4, I'll give you another chance in a year or so. You were a solid 7/10 experience, but I need mods to turn you into something I want to come back every day. Maybe if I hadn't just replayed FO3 and NV things would be different.

(not trying to provoke anyone with the gif, I recorded it for a group chat and couldn't resist posting it lol)

e: also I really need to go check out that Sterling review, 9.5 is an incredibly good score

Man I hope I helped the right Art.

One of the best random encounters so far.

Even with 7 CHA there was still a red dialogue option. Curiosity is killing me but that's the best part of the Fallout series. Multiple multiple playthroughs.

and LOL at Muntu's post above.

First thing I noticed after booting up the game:

Even after all these years mouse input is still super laggy in Bethesda games. It feels like dragging my pointer through molasses.

EDIT: And my first crash before I even started the game. Looks like Alt + TAB is still too much for this engine to handle.

How do I get more settlers at my only settlement (sanctuary?) i have an overabundance of food water beds defense and electricity but only seven settlers. Ive even built that tower to attract them but nothing!

Your Structures UI should have a "beacon" option. Put one in the ground, give it electricity, wait for twelve hours, and three four settlers should gather.
You can deactivate the beacon by pressing... Activate XD The switchboard in the middle of the beacon will signal it's off when it will flash red.

I'm just getting started but God damn do I suck at this game. Two ghouls? I'm dead. Two Raiders? Probably dead. Super Duper Mart is a no fly zone for me.

Can't even get to this fucking Power Plant. It's 9am and I need a drink.

Super Duper Mart was, I think, a way to "troll" Fallout 3 players.
Bring a companion, get enemies armors even if they look like shit, do anything you can to take out legendary enemies. ABUSE THE POWER ARMOR, it's not meant to be end-game gear.
You'll recognize legendary enemies by the star on the side of the name. If there's a skull next to their name, it means the enemy is above your level: sprinting will let you outrun practically every enemy... except the mirelurks.
Legendary gear IS NOT end-game gear, is just stuff with better stats and perks that LOOK game-changing but they are not. Legendary enemies are always at your level or one/two above but you can always beat them. Abuse the chems when you fight a legendary, it's worth it.
GET A SNIPER RIFLE. It will grant an easier approach to most raiders settlements.
Get the Awereness perk.

So the game just came in the mail today. After reading a lot of reviews , I'm having thoughts of returning the game. For those who played it, should I return it and re-buy it down the line?

Why don't you play it? the majority of negativity came when the came literally just came out... the people who didn't play it! I play on PC and haven't noticed any FPS drops, some bugs here and there but they are extremely minor. I had on Ps4 too (for when I feel like sitting on the couch and playing and don't really have any problems either, it's playable for me at least). Fallout is one of those games that you have to experience for yourself because every one has their own separate and unique experience. I recommend giving it a go.

So Preston is in Sanctuary, tells me he found a settlement that needs my help

"Clearing the way: Sanctuary Hills"

Go to one of my now 16 Settlers not 15 feet away

"We have a bug problem around the corner, could you clear it out?"

*check map*

it's across the entire freaking map lol

just got to diamond city and npc interaction noticably perked up once piper was involved. finally, someone who feels like a human being. I like the sound of this nick fellow too.

Which version?

I'm having a ton of fun with the game despite performance issues, for what it's worth (and I haven't had any major bugs outside of Thicket Excavations being weird and the Pip Boy not reacting well to Steam Community), but I'm also playing on PC.
The Ps4 version, wish I had a decent PC

how are you guys doing your armor? i found this cage armor that covers my chest and limbs very early on that provides 27 base def. i havent found a replacement yet, but am i better off using leather/metal and upgrading them?

I'm running Synth armor + super mutant underwear for around 80 points of armor. My best armor set is basically bra and panties.

Combat also noticebly picked up once this paladin gave me a sick laser rifle and now I can actually shoot people good.

the encumberance stuff as usual remains a problem :T

Bethesda had kind of this issue with Fallout 3 as well in terms of limiting that with being the son/daughter and father quest line but the non-voiced character minimised that issue for a lot of people, there were still a couple of confines from the start of Fo3 and Fo4 has it too. I remember complaints at Fo3 about people not being able to RP as an abandoned child, memory loss/amnesia, or that they murdered their parents, etc, it always had that parent relationship in vault + main quest relating to that hindering some RP. Only in F:NV really were you 100% blank slate, being the unknown courier. Personally I am ale to RP and "forget" things in games but I know a lot of people have a difficult time doing that understandably. So yeah I agree with you, still immensely enjoying the game because Bethesda always nails open world design and exploration/adventuring, the world building is always interesting and the world is dynamic and alive which most open world games except Bethesda's fail in. Plus for once Bethesda has actually made a more interesting and better written story since Morrowind. Terms of writing/story Bethesda has definitely improved..

I think we'll see an overhaul mod as one of the big mods for this and I'm sure it'll be the first. The game entirely being subtitled will kick it off quick. What it should include is

a) Muted protagonist.
b) List-based dialogue system with each question/response summarised like in Fo3 and NV.
c) Allow intelligence stat check as well instead of just charisma with certain choices.

We've already got mods like muted protagonist but it's not fully fleshed out or anything yet.

Yeah that's true about FO:3. Still, they left enough up to you to RP a bit. You did play as a child in the opening with some choices to determine what kind of kid you were. You could make up your own motivations for wanting to find your father. Having a voiced PC would have killed it.

NV and the Elder Scrolls games have done this best for sure. I remember starting dozens of new characters in Morrowind just to get mine in sync with the kind of story I wanted to tell.

I really, really hope they listen to people and don't go this route with the next ES game.

Back to FO4 - I've been exploring a bit and doing some random side quests and now just getting back to start Sanctuary. There is a bunch of stuff stored there, and a bunch of stuff stored at the Red Rocket gas station. Is it the same stuff? Or do I need to go back to RR and ferry all that crap to this base?

Are you eventually building bases all over the place? Or do you have to just pick one?

Also, do we know yet whether you can miss bobble heads? I remember this being an issue in FO3 - if you went through certain sections where bobble heads were hidden and didn't find them you couldn't go back and get them later. I'd like to play through without any sort of guide, then go back at some point to pick up the ones I didn't find on my own.

Our descendants after the great war are lazy fucks. It's been over 200 years, can someone clean up debris a little. Maybe have some pride of where you live and move things like skeletons and piles of dirt from where you live and sleep.
This always bothered me in Fallout. If you're living somewhere why would you leave an entire room filled with broken computers, messed up filing cabinets, and other garbage? Throw that shit out the window and make use of the space. And it's been 200 years of people raiding, scavenging, and monsters running amok, there's no way that this skeleton has been sitting undisturbed at his desk with the keys to his safe and a note to his wife this whole time.

Haha, yeah when she said "around the corner" and then I looked at the map I had a good laugh.

Dude, dude, dude. I had to most intense experience exploring that place (Super Duper Mart) last night (even posted it here). Took me two hours.

I was so close to dying many times but sprinting is your friend against Ghouls. Seriously though that place is filled with them. Has some nice items/gear though if you clear it out :)
I love love love this game so so so much.

Thank you for your kind words!

Thankfully these times are filled with new games, won't be running out of shit to play for a while. I'll replay FO4 next summer when new games are few and far between.

All in good fun brother :)

Hope we see you in the Wasteland soon. Seriously though can't wait to dig into PC mods in the future too.

This is exactly why I stayed clear of all things F04; from E3 to release I kept myself in the dark. Aside from the fact that this is my first FO game, I've gone into this completely green; no outside influences/persuasion, no canned media responses, and I'm loving it.

Plus, I like Bethesda, and after enjoying Skyrim for 3.5 years - this game is a breath of fresh air.

Who opposes who, faction wise? Where do the BoS of fit in? Is it a two way thing like NV, or can you join one of the prominent factions AND the BoS?

Faction motivations spoilers:
Minutemen, to my knowledge, will side with whoever you want to support, Brotherhood of Steel are against the Institute and Railroad.

If I pick up a decent weapon with a few mods on it, am I able to take those mods off to use on something else and scrap the gun? I thought that I had read that somewhere but there is so much going on with gun modding that it could've been something else I was reading.

Drop all the shit you don't need at a workbench. Give stuff to your companions to hold. Get more strength or modify armor to put pockets into them. Take the lone wanderer perk for extra carry capacity (the dog does not affect it. Bug? Who knows)

.

It is not the same stuff. Stuff stored in workbenches are their own to be used at that specific settlement. You can get the local leader perk (6 charisma) and then set up supply lines between settlements and then those linked up can share the stuff that is stored at their respective workbench automatically.

Holy shit this is a thing? Awesome stuff.

I still can't figure out how lighting connections work in this game.

I have a generator, a power pylon and a switch attached to the exterior of the house.. attached cord to each item, but nothing was lighting up, so I just placed one of those power "hubs" (those that come in three types - ground, wall and ceiling - ) on the floor outside, and a lightbulb on the ceiling lit up.
It may be because the lightbulb is actually attached to what can be considered the floor of the 2nd level of the house, but I'm not sure..

Still, I have a floor lamp on the other side of the ground floor that just won't light up. What am I doing wrong?

those pylons have a "Sphere of influence" which basically means anything in X yards gets powered if the generator has enough power in it

I love this game so much, casualy walking when suddenly I stumble upon Charles View Ampitheater and their "community". What a great jab at
scientology
.

Huh. Both times I've triggered the Art encounter, it's basically has just been
the two Arts taking pot shots at each other, with the eventual victor simply telling me to leave him alone as he walks away.
You're saying that there's more to this?

I've already found a ton of technical errors, such as falling through the world and NPCs suddenly being naked when I reload a quick save, and I do think the game is pretty much just Fallout 3 again with simplifications and some QoL improvements.

The core gameplay loop is always so good though. Love just exploring the world, finding new places, clearing them, being able to pick up so many items. Plus even though the writing isn't as good as New Vegas the quirkiness of the Fallout world remains that I just love.

Good god Bethesda games are addictive. It really has been too long since I've played one of these games.

You can interrogate one Art (at least here I could) and he'll tell you the truth.

Nothing beyond that though, really short encounter.

Anyone who did the Last
voyage of the USS constitution quest and side with the scavengers?
curious what happens.

Just spent an hour beating the
Grognak JRPG
holotape. It was pretty cute.

Spoilerish impressions:
Kind of challenging at points, but too long for no save file and it has an easy-peasy final boss.

Is there a glitch preventing Tina from leaving
Vault 81
? I convinced her but she isn't leaving...

Did you actually complete the quest? I don't know if
Tina
left, but I had the marker telling me to talk to her even though I'd already convinced her. I went to the
lab to talk to Bobby and Rachel
, and that finished the quest.

I have the same question. Because i convinced her and the quest thing still kept saying I needed to talk to her. I loaded a save a few times to keep doing it, but each time I did, the quest thing never updated. Also, each time doing it, I didnt actually say nehting, it's like I glitched, the screen paused on what I'm suppose to say, and goes to the character I'm talking to. They still give their response even though I dont know what I said. (has happened a few items before getting annoying). I eventually just loaded up a save and didnt bother trying to recruit her to the settlement.

Just been running around trying to find fusion cores and Power Armour. Going to assign some NPC's to the suits and create an army of Wasteland Space Marines.

Does joining the Brotherhood of Steal kick you out of the minutemen?

Ok, i'm constantly getting a mission by Preston once i finish a mission. Are these endless? Because if you read the text of the quest it presents itself as there being negative consequences to one of my settlements if i don't do it. I've done like 6-7 similar ones now...

So how much harder is Very Hard difficulty compared Hard difficulty? I'm not really finding the Hard difficulty to be a challenge.

I'm wondering how many there are myself, I've done quite a few.

quick question regarding companions.

Can all carry the same amount of weight? I want to use dogmeat but i fear the minuteman guy can carry more.
Also, minuteman guy has a gun, he seems more useful. true?

Hit level 30 this morning. Got Blitz 2 which is about as amazing as I expected. Melee gets fuckin' crazy in this game. Next up is getting Ninja 3, at which point I really wonder if anything will survive a sneak attack.

Also got Blacksmith 3 just before I quit and made an Extended Ripper. Haven't actually tried a Ripper yet in F4, should be fun. The tooltip damage is quite low compared to my Heated Sledge (which I think before chems is like ~225 + 50) but if it hits as fast as it did in F3/FNV it is going to be good times.

Seriously though, get Blitz.
