Dragon Quest 7 and 8 for 3DS show up on Amazon [Update: Confirmed]

The Japanese devs stated the lack of 3D in DQ8 was due to a lack of RAM in the 3DS hardware. Therefore, it seems they could have implemented 3D for N3DS consoles, since it has 128MB of additional RAM, but they chose not to make the game "N3DS-enhanced".
Dammit. This really disappoints me. Stereoscopic 3D is by far my favorite feature in games and when not available, I feel like a large chunk of a game is missing. Images look crisper with the 3D slider on, even at the minimum.

I want to know why 8 has a far brighter pallet to the point where the greass in places like the intro area is uber bright.

PS2:

The last is maybe a beta shot? A lot of shots on Google are more colorful as well, but even similar shots of 3DS ones are have different shades of colors.

Doesn't the 3DS's screen naturally darken / desaturate images on it? I seem to remember something about that.

Those 3DS shots are kinda puke.

I'm very excited that these games are coming west. The only DQ quest game I've played so far was 5 and I loved it. I may try to play either 4 or 6 before 7 comes out but am unsure with all the RPGs coming out this winter/spring. Hopefully DQ7 comes out early in the summer!

It does seem like someone fumbled with the contrast: colors are brighter but the darks are darker. Something to do with visibility on the 3DS's LCD screen? Perhaps the softer look of the PS2 version ends up looking too washed out because of the backlit screen? Maybe load up a shot on the 3DS web browser and see how that looks... can't imagine it would look that bad though.

Not really, I mean games like Tales of the Abyss have the exact same color on both 3DS and PS2 for instance IIRC.

I heard the same thing as the poster you quoted from the developers of Sonic Racing Transformed. Someone I know asked the developers on Twitter about the game and said he thought the game looked too bright (based on Nintendo Direct footage). The dev explained something along the lines of having to develop games with brighter colors than intended for them to look right on the actual 3DS' screen.

Hmm, how do all the GBC games hold up these days? 1-3 as well as Monsters 1 and 2.

I've got all the DS games but might go back and play the older titles when I have time and while waiting for 7 and 8.

Will import some NA copies to Australia (GBC was fully region free I assume) if they're good. And they don't seem too expensive looking at ebay right now, but maybe that's just how GB games are in general, I don't see many people collecting those games compared to home consoles.

The trick is to find listings that don't charge $30 for international shipping :|

Cause its on a handheld. Low saturation with darkiness are almost invisible on a handheld screen in any amount of sunlight. I tried playing MGS1 on my Vita (mostly on a bus) and there were times where it was literally impossible to continue.

Just keeping things saturated keeps everything nice and visible.

I have to say, as a DQ fan, my hardened heart has been so spurned in the past that I honestly didn't get my hopes up when this thread was first made. But now that it's been confirmed ... Pure joy. I've been waiting for so long ... (Clenched fist, single tear streams down cheek)

Just a quick Q: I glanced through last few pages and couldn't find the answer. Will the US version of VIII feature the symphonic music and voice work from the ps2 version? I'd be fine without the latter but not having the music was an amazing bummer when I tried playing the iOS version.

Hearing this news made me bust out my old copy of DQ8 on PS2. 7 and 8 are the only main series DQ games I haven't beaten, but I played around 20 hours of 8 and loved it, and I always meant to get back to it. Man, the load times on PS2 are a real impediment to playing games these days. I might have to figure out how to get a good emulated copy up and running, but that seems more complicated than I would have imagined.

At least I have both of the Trails in the Sky games, which after 8 hours of FC feel like they might scratch a similar itch.

PS2 shots do look better, but the new content is more than enough to get me to double dip, especially since I haven't played the original in nearly a decade. Also, any western DQ release is an automatic purchase on principle for me at this point.

People are falling into the same old "3DS screenshots look terrible!" trap again.

This happens nearly EVERY game. Screenshots are terrible for this handheld. Games nearly always look much better in motion.

Never played a DQ.

So in for DQ8!

But about DQ7, isn't that the game that gets good after 40h or something? I think I remember 8-4 saying that when DQ7 came out in Japan.

If Nintendo is bringing the games over, I hope they throw in a New 3DS enhanced mode like we've seen in a few other games (Rodea, MH4, etc).

It takes a long time (probably not 40h) to get to the Dharma temple, which lets you change classes. That's one of the more satisfying mechanics in DQ7.

Probably "gets good" once you sorta get going a bit, maybe once you get partway into Rexwood and are exploring the first cave. In the PS1 release that took a few hours but is much quicker to reach in the 3DS version.

For me, the first 20 hours was the best part of the game because I hated the job system. I thought that's when the game started to become grindy. It required a insane amount of battles to get the really good classes. You can really screw yourself if you pick the wrong classes if you don't use a guide, as I tried not to use for a long time.

Also while there were some better stories later on, there were also some stretches that I feel could have been cut and weren't that great. I felt the first 20 hours had the most consistently good story. I also love the slow opening. I like when games start you off in a world where nothing is wrong and there's no monsters for a long time. I'm disappointed that they made that shorter in the remake.

The remake helps this significantly. Most classes got huge reductions in the # of battles required to class level up, I think all the basic ones cut the amount in half to max them out.

I didn't do any class grinding and managed to get Hero on my Hero at least.

They also did away with the concept of hybrid skills, which while awesome, also created a bit of grinding in the original since you had to become seasoned in both classes, which sometimes meant fighting a bunch of battles as something you already maxed just to get seasoned in it again to learn a hybrid skill with another class.

How changed up is the opening in the remake?

My friend and I were watching the Direct in the car (well, he was listening), we're both huge Dragon Quest nerds, so it was a bit of a freak out when this was announced.

Then I had to remember that VII is an awful molasses slog of a game with a bloated directionless disaster of a job system.

Still, I did promise I would give this version a chance if it made it over and I know they changed some things.

VIII is a little plodding as well (mostly to give a sense of scale, I guess), but at least all the game systems were rock solid, a far more focused game, gameplay wise.

The 3DS version has voice acting and a (superior) re-recorded orchestral score, as I understand it.

Thanks. I might give it a shot next year! Which is better though, 7 or 8? Or is consensus divided?

Of the original versions it's 8 by a mile. Most of us haven't played the 3DS versions yet, so hard to say. 7 seems like a significant improvement over the original in all aspects. 8 is more of a mixed bag. It's a downgrade in terms of graphics and the wonderful voice acting is gone. But it does have new content.

Really I would recommend you track down Dragon Quest 5 on the DS and start playing that right now. That's probably the best game in the series (It's neck and neck with 8 for me) but you can play it today, instead of waiting for the summer.

I think the overall stories of VII are the best in the series, really emotional at times and dark at others. It is a game where a console remake for PS4 would go over well I think.

No voice acting and seemingly downgraded graphics.

Huh? Why would they won't be voice acting? They added voice acting to the Japanese versions, which never had it.

Why would the English version, which already has recorded lines, not have voice acting?

The PS2 does look better, but we get faster battles (this is huge), better skill trees, higher quality music, and a new dungeon and party members.

There are also subjective "upgrades". YMMV, but for me these are pluses.

-No random battles and being on portable.

Wait, what? They re-recorded just for the 3DS version? Is that for every track or for select tracks?

It seems really pointless.

You're complaining that they made the soundtrack better? The original symphonic recording was taken in a concert hall rather than a proper studio. What is there to complain about?

People really like to make stuff up about DQ8 3DS.

It's been this whole thread lol.

Oh, I'm so confused. I could have sworn I saw a post earlier in this thread (before mine) stating voice acting was out. I was just going off that.

I also didn't realize the scope of the update. I thought it was just a new ending and extra dungeon (I personally don't care for post game challenges) but faster battles and cleaned up OST are huge for me.

Hype back on.
