Disgaea PC [coming February 2016]

You're correct in that regard (being Japanese), but turn-based/tactics stuff typically gets a lot of love on PC regardless. I'd say it was less of being starved, and more about the PC audience loving that particular style of gameplay. The amount of 4X and cRPG's that have been pumping out on PC that use turn-based tactical gameplay has been insane lately, and it's down to poor market research that more Japanese devs haven't already got in on that.

That's also a very astute statement. But for the specific type of games that these are, i'd say there was absolutely an audience that was wanting these types of Japanese titles, and as you say, jumping on that yields big rewards just like Valkyria proved.

And hopefully it gives these series reconsideration by the publishers.

In any case, I vastly prefer xBRZ over what they use in Disgaea PC:

Seriously, the sprites on the right are messed to hell and beyond. WTF!

Congrats to PC-only gamers for finally getting to play this game natively. The graphics are likely to seem a bit rough to modern eyes, but the game is well worth it and it's still one of the best in the series.

I'm really surprised they are porting the first one. I expected Disgaea 5.

Really I didn't.
Marketing wise, Releasing disgaea 5 first would make the previous series irrelevant. Trust me it would, the gameplay and graphics are miles better than its predecessors. It's hard for me to play the previous Disgaea games after I've beaten Disgaea 5.

In this way they can maximize profits by releasing slowly the iterations that have released in the past. Such as Disgaea 1 then 2.

Or releasing this title and making fans interested in the PS4 version.

It's good marketing. It's win win.

Fun timing as I just Plat-ed 5 yesterday. It'll be nice to replay 1 as the DS version (Hour of Darkness) was my introduction to this IP and I absolutely loved it (Plenair was so broken and OP though)

No I dont think the PC was starved for turn based tactical games like VC and Disgaea. Instead I think they are a natural fit given all the turn based games and players that are already on the platform

Jep, People on PC actually like strategy games.

How so? It's one of (if not THE) highest rated game in the series plus it's the first one so it's arguably the best entry point for people who haven't played any of the games before.

The first disgaea game is hardly "major". It's 13 years old at this point

It's NIS's flagship series and outside of one brief port, the series has been exclusive to Playstation platforms for its entire lifetime.

He's talking about publishers/developers, not the relevance of the franchise. Maybe the first Disgaea isn't major, NiS Japan developing the port and confirming their stance of supporting PC is.

Starting with 1 is ok, but I think they should jump right to 5 with the next one. They might have a rough time sustaining interest with a slow release of 2-3-4 over a few years.

I wonder if people will be able to mod in high-res sprites.

Fantastic news! Now my hope for a Witch and the Hundred Knight port isn't completely hopeless.

Although its a bit more vague in its details than I'd like it to be...Is this version of Disgaea HD? It says updated textures and UI but I want more specifics.

Exactly.
NISA would be nuts to put out Disgaea 5 first.

1. It would require the most effort to port. The first four Disgaea titles are available on the PSP/Vita, while D5 is PS4-only.

2. Disgaea 1 is the most well-known entry in the series. The sequels improve on the original game substantially, but it still has a place in the hearts of many gamers.

3. If NIS put out D5 on PC first...What could they do next? Nobody is going to buy D1-4 if they already have the latest and greatest installment. By starting with D1, NIS can put out the other entries every few months and create a steady stream of revenue. Maybe they'll take chances on other games like Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom as well.

4. It's not like the prequels are all that obsolete compared to D5 either. The handheld Disgaea games received numerous enhancements, so they're still pretty fresh.

This is a major opportunity for NIS, because tactics-based RPGs are extremely few and far between on Steam. Even Square-Enix can't be assed to put FFT on the service, which is absolutely mind-boggling.

it really does, I wonder why people have been ignoring that ahahaha

well to their credit despite it counting it was a poor port and the only exception but yeah still counts

i hope they port over witch the and hundred knight as well since they are considering franchising it, makai kingdom too just cause

As long as they don't take too long between releases (a few months apart at most) and price them accordingly, I think it should be fine. Releasing D1-3 within a single year at 15 bucks each would be fairly reasonable.

The only thing that will stop me from buying this Day 1 will be the price. Q1 is pretty loaded for me, so double dipping on something I wont be playing anytime soon might not happen. That being said, I want to support it and have it do well. Disgaea needs to find a good home on PC.

Sure, that's true. Depends on how quickly they can crank them out.

I contacted the PR Guy I know at NISA.
I have to ask though: "The legendary Disgaea series is coming to Steam!"
Are there any potential plans for bringing any of the other Disgaea entries to Steam as well?
NIS PR said:
As for more Disgaea’s coming to STEAM, I’m gonna crib a verse from the PR bible and say, “If it does well, we definitely want to consider more titles going forward.” ;)

i wonder how nisa will roll out 3,4 and d2

they could release 3 & 4 vita ports with all the dlc, or they could possibly nickle and dime more people with their outrageous dlc prices lol >_>

Which is what he's talking about when he says "outside of one brief port"

yeah my mistake

Well I feel obligated to buy this now. I have been saying that that should of done this years ago, so now it is time I put my money where my mouth is.

This news leaves pretty much only two Japanese holdouts on my PC wishlist now. Gust and Atlus.

^_~ you read my mind. Oh I love the handheld but Disgaea 5 has just improved on so many aspects that I don't know what I would do without some of the features they have on it.

I hope this does so well for them, but I know it'll be a slow burn at first and not too crazy. It'll really help though with the extra revenue if the ports cost very little to make. I know NA players gobble up Disgaea titles on the Playstation so I hope the same happens on PC and more. I want NIS to succeed!!! Mobile would probably be extremely viable for Disgaea too.

It's not just the DLC, but significant amounts of new content and quality of life upgrades. They'd be crazy to port D3/D4 PS3.

oh i know, but the prices are bad, it's just a possibility despite it being impractical

they'll probably port the vita versions since they're porting the psp version of 1

I thought the season pass for 5 was reasonably priced. I got a lot of bang for my butt ;)

I don't even like Disgaea but I want to let Japanese developers know that I'm, indeed, starving for SRPGs on PC.
