These videos are great for an alternate perspective on things.

I knew about the cultural practice of buying a "diamond engagement ring" literally being a wildly successful ad campaign, but seeing it spelled out here is great. The pet breeds one is good too.

So I've just watched the first couple of episodes and this is actually really great.

I'm surprised this show doesn't have a proper dedicated thread (at least from what I couldn't find) with people talking about it. This show presents a lot of interesting subjects so far that people should question and think about. Also, while it is USA focused it brings up subjects that should be asked and talked about in other countries as well.

So, that thing about restaurants validated the way I have felt about them for a long time: it's a way for post-20th Century people to feel like they have actual butlers and servants, and thus pay for a couple of hours of socially-validated classism. The people who bring you your food are even called servers. I absolutely loathe the feeling of being waited on, of being looked after by people who feel the need to suck up and be personable for tips, so if I could get the atmosphere of an establishment without watching people scrounge from table to table to perform for their money I'd be a lot happier with the whole thing. It's like a big stupid play we all take part in, and if your personal actor isn't up to snuff they don't walk away with any returns from the box office. Why does their temporary servitude matter? Why not go to a restaurant just for the food you want and not also have to decide how much money someone goes home with? Why is this one of the few times that compensation is arbitrarily decided on after the fact with random and inconsistent rules and customs?

It's all a big fucking sham that serves the owners and not the workers (until you get to high-end restaurants which is a whole 'nother can of worms). Tipping culture has bred overreliant and overindulgent people on two sides of a relatively simple human act we all do multiple times a day, and we in North America accept that as gospel just be-fucking-cause. Fuck that whole state of affairs.

Edit: Not sure why I ranted there, sorry. Probably 'cuz I'm drunk. Anyway, this is a good show!

Ah, good, the topic name change was appropriate.

Last weeks episode was pretty interesting to someone outside of America. The electoral college thing is extremely messed up to have, like a completely needless extra step.

Partly why I stopped tipping.
Good service should be part of your job description, I shouldn't have to tip so you can do your job properly.
It's also not my responsibility to subsidize your pay; don't like it, take it up with your boss.

you not tipping isn't going to change the horrible system, it just means someone is going to get underpaid on an already shitty wage
and anyone who takes it up with their boss will find themselves quickly without a job

but it is honest truth that its not your responsibility to show basic human decency and compassion instead of taking advantage of a shitty wage system to get cheaper meals

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

Did you miss the part of the episode where he says you should still be tipping because that's the system we have right now?

I spent most of the first half of this year talking to Adam about video games on a daily basis in CollegeHumor's work slack channel. There was a point during the summer when he clearly got busy on production for the show and I've changed jobs since then. He's a super cool guy and it's awesome that this idea took off like it did.

Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man
thanks for posting. Seems like this is more along the lines of penn and teller bullshit.

I've watched all the clips, and now am annoyed that there doesn't seem to be a way to legally watch this show without paying for cable. Oy.

Wow. College Humor puts subs on these meanwhile TruTV, which has captions on TV, won't even bother to put those on the same video.

GG television networks.

But yeah, I watched the Car Dealership one and was mind blown at how dealerships are ran and aren't actually under the auto-makers to where the auto-makers are held hostage by the dealerships.

I heard about these tests and it really confused me. I've worked at wineries. I never drank wine prior to working there but now it's all I drink. That somebody couldn't tell the difference between a white and red wine is....very weird. I suppose they could have been led to believe the red wine was very aged and had lost a lot of the strong taste characteristics it would have had as a young wine. But white and red wines smell completely different.

As for not being able to tell the difference between a "high quality" and "low quality" wine, yes it is subjective to an extent....but then there's people like this....

My first instinct is to say "no way" about such studies, and who knows, maybe that specific study is flawed, but it's a well accepted fact that our expectation can change the way we experience things.
It's not about pretentiousness, it's an actual thing, if you expect something to taste good, it is more likely to taste good to you.

Also, I know for a fact that you can't go with gut feelings and common sense about our senses, they don't necessarily work the way we think they do, like, if you plug your nose and close your eyes, you can't tell the difference between an apple and an onion.

So who knows, maybe I just imagine that they smell different, it would surprise me but it wouldn't shock me.

I've been watching these videos on the CH youtube channel for a while now. They're the best thing that channel offers IMO and I consistently enjoy them.

Glad to see there's a thread.

Recently started watching these videos and the TruTV episodes, absolutely love them.

Also, dont you love that a lot of them are "corporations wanted more money"?

Its really great to know that corporations and marketing ploys control my life and my culture.

Thanks Adam.
