Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

Can't wait for people reactions when they announce that you can't use your PS2 disc games.

I don't think anyone is actually expecting that, but people can always hope for it. I'm hoping it happens, but ya know what my reaction would be if that doesn't happen? "Well, that's still really cool though."

How many titles are even available as ps2 classics? It would be such a waste to not include discs

That is very unlikely to happen. If it did, it would be similar to how the X1 does 360 retail emulation, and would only apply to games that are released on PSN as a PS2 Classic.

And let's not forget, the PS2 disc region would probably have to match your PSN account region as well...

There are a bunch of PS2 games I'd buy for PS4, assuming they are priced at a couple dollars a pop which is what they are worth now!

We could probably infer they would be around 10 bucks. That was PS2 Classics price on PS3.

PS1-5 bucks
PS2-10 bucks

Which is still a great price all things considered. Super Nintendo games on the Wii U VC are 8 bucks in comparison.

PS2 > X360. Sony wins again!

I'm cool with that. I never owed a X360 and only played one a handful of times.

But am I the only one that thinks this is really strange? Usually when a console is trying to be backwards compatible it'll be for the last generation that it tried to replace so you would expect PS3, not PS2.

This is almost exactly like the Atari 7800, which was backwards compatible with 2600 games but not 5200 games.

The interesting bit is that they are running in emulation and not remastered ports like some thought they would, which means that PS2 classics could definitely be coming.

rare replay ran nearly all of its games through emulation, yet it's not like we're going to see ZX Spectrum/NES/SNES/Arcade/N64 games coming to XB1

we're still probably going to see ps2 classics on ps4 tho

This is not a confirmation of anything. Rare Replay has emulated games. Does that mean we have OG Xbox BC. Sorry guys.
As someone else noted, the ONLY OG Xbox game included in Rare Replay was Grabbed by the Ghoulies - which was re-created for Xbox One without the aid of emulation. It's an actual port.

All non OG Xbox games are emulated in the collection, however.

MS emulating 360 on X1 is a better solution to PS2 emulation on PS4?

Talk about nonsense.

One is a solution for 360 emulation, the other for PS2.

Sony gives zero fucks about 360 emulation or X1.

I meant that Microsoft solution is better from marketing point of view. They are emulating the previous console and not the older one. I doubt many people will decide to buy one console over the other because it emulates games two-generation old.

Ps now was never a BC solution for ps4.

Yup. Even if Sony sneakly used that angle for PSNow marketing, I'm pretty sure X1 BC made them rethink their strategy.

The closest to PS3 BC you'll ever get on the PS4 will be remasters and PSNow. PS1 and PS2... there's simply no excuse now.

Well I stand corrected. I just want to stay on the side of skepticism.

Of course, but what does that have to do with what I said? You aren't altering any of the game's code by making a trophy jpg, or making the trophies for that matter.

Yeah i know. I'm just afraid no publishers will actually care to go back and program those trophies in resulting in little to no support of this emu.

So what are the chance for remote play features for this? Has anyone tried playing the star wars games with remote play?

So, does anyone know if this is DISC-BASED too? Or do they make you buy a CODE?

Because I'm not buying the same damn games I STILL have the original PS2 discs for.

PS1/PS2 Games I have on Disc:

1. All the Resident Evil games, PS1 and PS2, through Code Veronica
2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
3. Final Fantasy 7
4. ESPN NFL 2K5
5. Burnout Revenge
6. Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2
7. Champions of Norrath
8. Metal Gear Solids

Give me FREE DISC-BASED EMULATION!!!!

please - thank you.

PlayStation nostalgia is strongest with PS1 and PS2.

For Xbox? Let's be honest, the golden age of the Xbox brand was the Xbox 360.

Am I missing something or have people taken the three Star Wars games included with Battlefront as confirmation that we are getting PS2 emulation?

The fact that it will upscale the pixel density alone makes it a must-have feature.

I tried playing my PS2 on my HDTV through the Progressive scan adatopr cables and it's a nasty, block mess.

It looks better on a standard definition TV, probably because of the 4:3 aspect ratio of the older games.

I doubt PS2 discs would work as intended on PS4.

Damnit. This is the only reason I'd care/be excited. Cause i'm not rebuying all those games just to play on PS4. But if I could get rid of my PS2 (because we have too many things vying for spots on the tv anyways) that would be nice. Also, be able to play Smuggler's Run with a controller that is slightly less of a POS than PS2 controllers (That reliably broke on me. So do the PS4 controllers but at least they break in mostly usable but annoying ways).

I'm a little surprise so many people still own ps2 discs??

My PS2 collection is bigger than any other collection of games for any other console I own. Save maybe the PSX collection but I don't know because for some reason they almost all disappeared (pisses me off, I had an original copy of FFVII and I don't know where it is).

If you just want to play those games via disc then put them into their respective consoles.

If you want HD upscaling, trophies, and PS4 playback, you simply won't be getting that by putting the disc in a PS4, which can't even read CD-ROMS to begin with.

Free, disc based emulation isn't happening.

Then don't.

They aren't going to enable disk support. It will be PS1 and PS2 classics just like on PS3 and Vita(for PS1 classics and PSP)

The HD upscaling and performance improvements alone is worth it to me, it basically makes any PS2 remaster irrelevant

I don't know if I agree with that. I know it's opinions and all, but many people (myself included) feel that the PS2 gen totally shits all over the PS3/360 gen as far as games libraries goes. It's very likely a huge incentive to tip people over the edge into buying a PS4 that still haven't. Definitely more of an incentive than PS3 BC in my opinion.

Hell, I was having a discussion just the other day with some friends about 360 BC on Xbox One and how neat of an addition it was. That spawned the question of "If Sony could do BC with 1 console what would you choose?" Most of them said PS2. No bullshit; This conversation happened, which makes this entire topic really surprising to me just coming off that conversation recently.

I'm hoping it's only taking this long because they want most or all of the PS1 & PS2 titles already available on different platforms digitally to work well & be available day 1. Though I guess some of those could have more of a problem with licensing and whatnot and not all that much to do with problematic emulation.
