Play-Asia says SJWs to blame for DOAX3 not coming west

Senran Kagura and Criminal Girls *did* have a fair amount of controversy over them, though. Hell, the latter was banned from dedicated discussion on this site partially because threads on it were inevitably going to become a shitstorm.
And they got localized with no issues :P

Are we pretending now that scumbags with no journalism degrees tweeting shit about GG are any different than other scumbags with no journalism degrees pretending to be victims of big evil bethesda because now they have to actually pay for the games they review are any different? Guess what, they're both scumbags, hence I view them equally when someone quotes them, and that view is whoopity fucking doo you can quote things you don't necessarily agree with 100% of the time.

Oh boy.

Btw, Stephen Totilo (The author of the irrelevant Bethesda article you brought up) has a Masters Degree in Journalism from Columbia University.

Negative publicity is good publicity. Just look at Hatred. It sold way more than it deserved thanks to the all the attention. So clever move on Play-Asia's part.

I was cooler with it when it was just a term that seemed to relate to Tumblr's popularity and completely misguided crusades in sanitizing kids cartoons over the most minor of offenses.

One of the most annoying things about the GG co-option of SJW is that I don't have an in-group term to use when I'm complaining about humorless and overly difficult people inside the community of academics and activists anymore!

Thanks for the description, can I use it elsewhere?

Knock yourself out.

I don't have to establish that. I do not work for them.

You certainly do if you intend to continue making that argument in this thread.

Ya'll saying how this is going to be a disaster for Play Asia are hella overestimating how much people outside of gaf and maybe a few twitter circles actually care about a company twitter saying something vaguely off color.

Except he didn't re-tweet stuff like that, did he?

Really? I'm pretty sure were barely mentionned on mainstream gaming sites. These are the kind of games only hardcore niches care about.

Anyway, that didn't stop the games' publishers from releasing sequels here without fear of the "SJW" backlash...

this is kind of reminding me about when harada revealed that cat girl in tekken 7 and some people(tumblr) bitched about it, so harada said instead of getting the cute cat girl we are getting some homogeneous bald space marine guy. also when the artist of dragons crown sent jschreir the drawing of the big burly dwarves when he complained about the sorceros being a loli fantasy(LMAO)

The biggest joke about that being that Harada had already put in a bald space marine in Tekken years ago and no one complained.

I always assumed that any controversy would be less around the fact that it's basically a softcore porn game and more around Marie Rose.

I feel like DOA is such a thing now that most people are just kinda "ehhhh" over how weird and sexualized it is. I just thought that it'd be issues dealing with ESRB when it came to Marie Rose, who, while "of age" in most of the west on paper, is clearly designed to look like someone muuuuch younger than that.

So I'm trying to figure out where this proposed blowback against Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is coming from.

Let's take our own forum for example, where we're frequently accused of being a fascist censorship regime on the topic.

"Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 (PS4/Vita) - Debut Gameplay Teaser Trailer & Screenshots"

Despite being 365 posts long, I could not find a single condemning post in the thread. There is one post that says the game needs more men, but I'm relatively sure that's because the person wants to see hot dudes in the game, and is not a statement of needed equality.

This one has a few.

This is almost as bad as trying to contact their customer support to try and stop them sending you emails. I guess communication just isn't their thing.

Game importation is a niche enough market where controversy in a few major circles can have a significant effect.

That being said, I doubt this will hurt P-A long term. The only thing this will hurt is the current P-A poster's twitter privileges. I highly doubt they stick around after this.

Now that I think about it, same. I like Senran Kagura, but I'm wondering how it managed to stay on GAF, and even have an active community thread, while Criminal Girls is banned.
No one can stop the hometown vs life thread that id the senran kagura community. That snd thankfully people with no interest stay out if the thread so it doesn't turn to shit. Tho u get the occasional post

well goku does have blue hair now

I remember reading a complaint from a gamergater/DBZ fan that Goku's blue hair made him look like a "tumblr sjw"

Then he drew a female super saiyan god articulating the same complaint, because if there's anything that unites gators, it's the need to invent women who agree with them.

I wonder if he'll lose his job or if it's just Play Asia catering to their audience.

Can't tell, we'll see I guess...

I know Japan has a heavy right-wing population going right now, not sure if that's spreading across other Asian nations as well? (Play-Asia is a Hong Kong-based import/export business, I assume?) The term "SJW" may be something that's floated around English-speaking foreign businesses commonly, without fully understanding its political connotation or without getting blowback from the other side of the political spectrum. Their Twitter guy might have seen it enough in response to DOAX3 posts that they co-opted it to be one with the most vocal masses. (That said, SJW feels more like an online meme than a social term, and surely people savvy to games have a bit of insight into how that term's thrown around.) So maybe their offices are actually steeped in that demographic (or an equivalent of it there) and see nothing wrong with their political slant because they live amongst a version of it?

It's also hard to say who's importing these days. Games are plentiful and cheap, it takes a real dyed-in-the-wool old-school gamer to care about games they can't get. Or a pervert (because we'll still never get ALL the rubbable Vita games...) Surely there's the blissfully open otaku we want to believe is glomping through anime conventions, but maybe a large percentage of those, the people Play-Asia sells to, they really are close to it.

I like Play-Asia, but I thought Goldmountain (their PR guy) hates North America for some reason. I think they're one of the best places to order imports from. I may have misinterpreted his language or something.

Hmm.

Well, I meant the poorly photoshopped image. I don't understand, what it is trying to convey?

It's a play on Chrono Trigger (the game) and people who use the phrase "trigger warning" in media.

Without going into detail on either topic, the image is basically just making fun of left-leaning/liberal/"SJW" people. P-A retweeting it is, as others have said, fanning the flames of those who see anyone on that side of the political spectrum as SJWs.

In short, it's them doubling down on "eff you, progressives!", and keeping others' Twitter handles (all of the @ names in that retweet) tends to lead to a wave of harassment, when GG is involved.

Seriously, can someone explain this image to me? I feel I'm really out of the loop on all this stuff.
It's the 'triggered' lady photoshopped onto Chrono from Chrono Trigger.

I remember reading a complaint from a gamergater/DBZ fan that Goku's blue hair made him look like a "tumblr sjw"

Then he drew a female super saiyan god articulating the same complaint, because if there's anything that unites gators, it's the need to invent women who agree with them.
I remember Milo going on a mini-rant about people who dye their hair can't be trusted around your house like a month before he decided to fashion his dye his hair and fashion it after Draco Malfoy for some reason. Though I guess it's slightly less hypocritical than getting a few easy hits out of calling gamers rapist manchildren a few weeks before hopping onto Gamergate, so whateves.

Oh also Play Asia is straight up retweeting gamergaters now

Including one tweet that called out a bunch of accounts who complained, so now they're getting hatemobbed by gamergaters

so now I'm extra pissed at them

They're signal boosting harassing tweets now.

But no, completely trustworthy. If you don't trust Play-Asia, then you must be some kind of fascist.

I'm getting sealioned on Twitter for tweeting P-A about this. GG took the ball and ran with it.
Gross.

So where else can I preorder the multi/English language version?

Nice strawman, Kotaku could give two shits about free review copies, and said as much. The point of going public about being blacklisted has sailed way over your head.

People complained about Lucky Chloe, but it wasn't people on tumblr. It was actually GAF. Harada replied to a tweet that linked the GAF thread complaining about how Chloe was just J-pop bullshit or whatever. Then he made the joke that he will replace her in the west and people who cannot read nuance or sarcasm ran with it as a story.

Because there's literally no controversy anywhere about this game and so there is actually no possible explanation except that it's manufactured?

I know you have been saying this until you've been blue in the face for multiple, multiple pages in this topic, but this is precisely the reason why I think this entire debacle is absolutely fucking absurd.

We essentially have a phantom boycott where literally no person in this topic actually pointed out to an actual existing boycott/critique/etc of this game. Yeah, it might affect sales of this game... And Russia might decided to deploy Cherno fucking Alpha from Pacific Rim in Syria tomorrow. Right now, it's all nothing but conjecture with no actual factual basis unless K-T has the data based on prior DOA releases and is just not telling us because reasons.

What are these hypothetical numbers that KT arr sitting on that tells them their pure fanservice game would have sold enough to be profitable if not for people complaining? I know you don't have any numbers, but what could they possibly be? What is the market segment that would have bought DOAX3 if it had been released 5 years ago, but won't today because of people criticizing the game on the internet? I just don't see how those people exist.

I don't think they exist either. Moreover, I don't think anyone is suggesting that SJWs would cause this DOAX3 to sell any less. The game doesn't exist in a vacuum, however, and a cost-benefit analysis would take a lot of issues into account that go beyond the sales potential of this one game. Maybe they thought a smear campaign would hurt the DOA brand as a whole? Who the fuck knows. Maybe they were completely off base, maybe their calculations were wrong, and maybe they completely overestimated the backlash. Koei-Tecmo has the numbers and the research, and they have determined that "SJW nonsense" (to quote Play-Asia) was a big enough concern.

I did laugh though

Ultimately it feels like KT wants that taboo heat that Sega gets all the time when they pull this shit. Remember how much shit was flipped around here when Yakuza 5 and Yakuza Issen were going to be Japan only?

KT announces that DOAX3 isn't coming over here and no one bats and eye. They had to do something, they just did something stupid. And they're going to be cleaning up after it for some time...

Thank you, both of you. That is pretty fucked up.

You keep mentioning these numbers and research.

By the same token, can I keep saying they have magic unicorns telling them not to release it? You can't prove they don't!

Is that fanart as unintentionally hilarious as I imagine it being?

I'm surprised Koei is going with this excuse since they don't mind bringing Senran Kagura stateside.
From what I understand Koei really hasn't said much, some lowly community manager said something but then deleted the tweets. Because it wasn't true or because they weren't allowed to talk about it, who knows.

Well, except Coolio McAwesome who knows but doesn't know all at the same time.

You know, for a site people say is the bastion of the hyper-liberal, tumblr's top results for "dead or alive" are either porn or complaints about SJWs taking away their games.
