PlayStation 4 sales (sold-through) hit 30.2 million worldwide

The Wii dropped off hard at the latter end of it's cycle (clearly suggesting a cooling off in the wider market), while the 360 and PS3 kept pushing decent numbers.
Wii dropped off because Nintendo stopped publishing games for it almost completely. PS3 and 360 had some big releases even close to PS4 and X1 launches, because they were such money holes to Sony and MS they had to try to make some money out of them -> longest console gen ever.

If the PS4 can avoid falling off a cliff it should be able to have a decent chance to push past the Wii's lifetime numbers.
This gen won't be long enough for that to happen. PS4 and X1 are already struggling with resolution and fps. PS4 would have to expand the contracting market big time instead of cannibalizing previous Wii and X360 owners as they will run out after a while.

Wii wasn't solely a casual market, but a very large percentage of sales went to people that don't normally buy consoles every cycle.
This can be said of every market leader console, like PS1, PS2, DS etc.

See, this is incorrect as well, as there's good news. The contraction is over. Title count, pub count, developer count and retail software sales will be flat to slightly up vs 2014. The pullback is done. The only question is whether the market ever gets back to growth or if the current annual sales volume is the new normal (it's probably the new normal).

Don't all of these measures usually tick upward at this point in a platform's life cycle? (When new owners are still coming in but the install base has hit certain thresholds that make it a ripe platform for pubs and developers to sell on.) I don't know that this tells us anything about the meta, multi-generational trends.

Enjoy it while it lasts, Sony.

Next gen should be interesting.

If they don't do something stupid like what MS did going from X360 to X1, they should be in good shape.

1. Make sure no dumb software lockdowns, used game issues, or online only/always connected crap that plagued X1
2. Make sure PS5 is as powerful or better than X2/NX
3. Maybe have PS4 bw compatibility (this is nice to have not a must)
4. $350-399 stand alone / $450-499 VR bundle
5. Profit

And make sure it launches around the same time as the next Xbox.

I think they'll be fine.

Enjoy.

The last three generations have showed there are absolutely no guarantees when it comes to who will be market leader from generation to generation.

This is a nice showing by Sony, but let's hope it doesn't lead to overconfidence with what they think they can ask of consumers the next time around.

Seems like MS had to learn the hardway with regards to their console the way Sony learned starting out with the PS3.

Next gen will be very interesting to see. I look for MS to come out with a monster of a machine, and I'm sure Sony will have a power house of a machine as well. Hopefully MS has learned their lessons this gen, and make a better product next go around. With them and Sony competing, it's the gamers that win.

What major games released for 360 it's last year? Hell even the last 2 years. Unless you mean third party as I don't recall much of anything on 360 it's last year especially.

That's one thing I've always brought up. You could look at the OXM and OPM magazines through the last 2 years of those generations and the cover was almost always some new IP or exclusive title for PSM and OXM usually had third party IP covers or Halo.

I don't think we will see powerhouses. It's going to be an x86 APU from AMD again so in comparison to PCs it'll still be relatively weak. With Zen, HBM, and small processes it'll be a good jump from this gen but certainly not powerhouses like the PS3 and 360 were in comparison to PCs at launch.

I'm trying to figure out what could happen to Sony to fuck it up again like the PS3.. Idk how.
Too soon but still.

Market leader only changes hands when there's a major screw up.

Considering both Sony and Microsoft have had no problem bungling their own start to generations, there's really no way to truly predict what will happen.

Who knows, years from now the management at both companies could be entirely different. Maybe VR catches on and everyone chases that instead? Maybe it's another entirely new gimmick? Perhaps Nintendo catches the casual audience in a big way again? Like I said, there's a lot of variables and I don't think any lead is safe from gen to gen. The market changes and adapts, and in the short span of a year perception can change entirely.

If there's anything the last three (last 4 actually) generations have shown is that Playstation is the most consistent and strongest brand in gaming.

You know Xbox will try to get a head start. Can't really compete launch aligned.

People have proven it's about power now. Get the most powerful box for the best price and you win. I doubt ms will have the weaker console next gen. They have the money to blow on making sure the hardware is key and no silly kinect junk

It doesn't get shut down. That's the point of rhetoric. People still say vita has no games when vita has a great library even if you aren't into anime girl face.
Every Vita owner is required by law in Japan to have at least one page of anime girl face games.

At what cost though? They could, but in the end it won't change much, I think it could be even worse, when a year later you could get a brand new PS5 with better specs and well priced. I would be shocked if we see a ps360 scenario,

You think MS could win just because it's a little more powerful vs Sony WW?

Compared to the competition? Absolutely. However I'm merely trying to say that no company is immune to overconfidence and fuckups from gen to gen. The waters will become even muddier as the console market changes and VR is introduced.

Unless they make a huge blunder like the PS3 it will be more of the same. Playstation domination is the normal routine.

PS1 and PS2 both dominated.

Last generation was such a weird thing though. You had Nintendo exploding to crazy sales with the Wii and petering out at the finish line. 360 being the developer's console and then riding Kinect to crazy sales. PS3 fucked up big time and turned things around for a solid performance. Then this generation Nintendo is dead last, XB1 on the back of major fuck ups is performing well but being majorly outclassed by crazy PS4 sales.

It's naive to assume the console market is the same as it was in the PS1/PS2 days. Nintendo exposed new audiences with the Wii, and later MS with the Kinect. And now much of that audience has shifted and gone to mobile. MS is going to change things even more next gen if they decide to go towards a more software based approach through their W10 Xbox app.

They broke 30 million before we even hit Black Friday. That basically destroys everyones expectations. Simply incredible.

Amazing.. And this coming of the lackluster Oct NPD results....

I wont lie...looking at some of yall predicting 30, 35 million by end of the year...I was like...really? The years almost over....

Shows how much I know.

While it lasts ? lol. Dude, Sony been dominating every other console like a little b***h, except with the PS3 and even then it was outsold in 2 territories, US and UK. Worldwide was Sony killing it big time. The problem with Microsoft is that they don't have a worldwide presence important enough to make a dent but we'll see i guess but judging by history, it's all about US and UK. Sony needs to do something stupid again, like PS3, to lose to MS.

I say there's too many variables to what next-gen will look like. VR can be a major thing or something like that and could be a game changer.

Well Krazy Ken handed MS last generation.

Exactly. It happens.

Even with the Wii U. Before it launched I expected more competition from it. Even tho I have always given Sony credit for what it did right with the PS4, this gen will also be remembered for what the other 2 did wrong.

Man... where is that old thread from 2011 or 2012 where people were predicting Sony would be dead by now?

If you mean the next gen prediction thread...

lol....I read thru it from time to time. It surfaced recently in some thread.

Yep, these measures tend to be fairly cyclical with the gen itself.

Will we see that next year? Tough to say. But will something like VR cause the dev and title count to jump? Probably? There's so much uncertainty about the next 5 years, isn't there?

I switched from the 360 to the ps4 after switching to xbox from the ps2.

Wonder if i'll switch back to xbox next gen.

But suffice to say i am glad i went ps4 this gen. I just wish i could hide from friends online!!

The price of the PS3 did that.

:P well sure, but it could be argued the same for Xbox this time. Higher price and disastrous pre-launch campaign.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I wouldn't call a lock on next gen either way, even in regions that can usually go either way. There are always surprises.
Wow, 2 years in and we're already at the "Next gen will be interesting" phase.
This generation is boring; it seems like Sony is a lock for sales lead, Microsoft has insisted they don't intend to compete with VR any time soon, their AR/hololens thing is also kind of up in the air, etc. So sure, people are talking about the next gen.

Also, isn't this gen expected to be a bit shorter than the last one?

This is the first gen where every major hardware player has talked about new hardware (NX, PSVR, Hololens) before the median age of the consoles already on the market has reached two years.

Both MS and Sony are trying to be ahead of the curve and find whatever the next phenomenon tech will be.

In the case of Nintendo, they are pretty much just trying to get back on track.

So why didn't the Original xbox or Gamecube outsell the Playstation 2?

I really need to buy one again, when the exclusives start pouring out next year. I'm loving my Xbox One for its exclusives but having a PS4 again would complement well with my PC and Xbone setup. Might wait until Boxing Day sales and see what I can get, here in Auatralia it's now dropped to $350 which is the sweet spot.
